Nice Boost: Chub Frank Heads West With Momentum From Pair Of Top-Five Finishes In Tennessee

BEAR LAKE, PA – July 6, 2010 – Chub Frank picked up a little momentum for his trip west with a solid holiday weekend.

The veteran racer from Bear Lake, Pa., put together back-to-back top-five finishes on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, finishing fifth at both Wartburg (Tenn.) Speedway on Friday night (July 2) and Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway on Saturday night (July 3). He doubled his total number of top-five runs this season on the national tour in a 24-hour span.

“For being in Tennessee, I’ll take it,” said Frank, who has never been a huge fan of racing in the south. “Two top-fives in a row isn’t bad at all. We just need to build on this and get up there a little bit more to battle for some wins.”

Frank, 48, kicked off his weekend of new track visits in the Volunteer State with a steady outing at Wartburg, a circular quarter-mile oval. He timed ninth-fastest, finished second in a heat race and drew the third starting spot for the 50-lap A-Main, but he settled into the fifth spot and stayed there for virtually the entire distance.

The next evening at the high-banked, one-third-mile Tazewell oval, Frank qualified seventh-fastest but missed the A-Main redraw with a third-place finish in his heat. He started seventh in the ‘Coca-Cola 50’ and moved up two spots despite battling an overheating engine in his Corry Rubber/Hino Toyota Rocket car for most of the race.

“I’m happy with a fifth because the motor got hot pretty early,” said Frank. “I tried to milk it home, so I had a better car than what I showed. I think I could’ve run with some of those guys ahead of me – but of course, if I was racing harder I might’ve been in the wreck (on lap 15 the lapped Rick Rogers flipped in turn four and the top-four cars were at least marginally involved in the ensuing scramble) with all those guys.”

Frank, who left Tennessee still ranked ninth in the WoO LMS points standings, made a 10-hour overnight haul from Tazewell to his northwestern Pennsylvania shop following Saturday night’s action so he could spend a couple day preparing for his next excursion. He will participate in the four-race WoO LMS ‘Wild West Tour,’ which features the ‘Gopher 50’ on July 7 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Pa. (Frank is a former winner of the event) as well as races on July 8 at Superior (Wis.) Speedway; July 9 at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D.; and July 10 at Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, S.D.
