Chub Frank Looks Ahead To ‘Great Northern Tour’ After Disappointing Trip To Eldora Speedway For ‘Dream XVI’ BEAR LAKE, PA – June 14, 2010 – With a disappointing trip to Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, for the Dirt Late Model ‘Dream XVI’ behind him, Chub Frank’s focus is now on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Great Northern Tour.’
The six-track, eight-race swing begins on Tues., June 15, at Can-Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, N.Y., and continues through the Firecracker 100 on June 24-26 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. – nearly two weeks of racing around the home region of the veteran driver from Bear Lake, Pa.
Frank, 48, is ready to put his ‘Dream’ experience behind him. He missed the heat-race inversion cut by timing 42nd-fastest in the 104-car qualifying session on Fri., June 11 – a left-rear tire he cut on a piece of debris might have at least slightly hampered his second-round lap – and never really recovered, failing to qualify for the big $100,000-to-win 100-lapper for the first time since 2006.
“It was just one of those weekends where everything that could go wrong, did go wrong,” said Frank, who missed a top-three transfer spot by three positions in the sixth 15-lap heat race on Saturday night (June 12) and finished 13th in the 20-lap B-Main on Sunday afternoon (rain after the Saturday’s heats postponed the remainder of the show to Sunday). “We didn’t do our job in time trials, but we ran over something on the track during time trials, it was raining during our heat so there wasn’t much chance of passing, and we ended starting in the wrong row in the B.”
Frank is looking for much better results on the WoO LMS ‘Great Northern Tour,’ which will visit some tracks where he ran well in 2009. Following Can-Am on the schedule is Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ont., on June 17 (the tour’s first-ever visit there); Quebec’s Autodrome Drummond on June 19 (“I like that place,” said Frank); Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway on June 20 (he finished eighth there last year after being forced to start last because officials ruled that he worked on his car after presenting it on the starting line); Brewerton (N.Y.) Speedway on June 22 (he came from 21st to finish fifth there in ’09); and Lernerville.
The $30,000-to-win Firecracker 100 extravaganza, of course, highlights the Great Northern Tour – and Frank has to be considered one of the favorites for victory. He’s already made three visits to the track this season and has two wins and a second-place finish, and last year he finished second in a held-over WoO LMS A-Main that kicked off the Firecracker weekend. He placed 12th in the 2009 Firecracker 100.
