Springfield Raceway Preparing For The Late Model Showdown With MARS And MLRA

Springfield, Mo.-After a tremendous USMTS event Sat night the crew at the Springfield Raceway are looking ahead to the next special event on June 26th as the Midwest Regional Traveling Series MARS Super LateModels will team up with the Bad Boys of the northern Missouri MLRA Super Latemodels in their very first head to head event in Southern Missouri in the running of the John Kuntz Memorial sponsored by Andy's Frozen Custard at the Quick-Quarter Mile dirt track in Springfield,Mo.with the winner taking home $3,000

This was scheduled to be the very first ever co-sanctioned event with these two traveling Series, but with the opening of the Sedalia Fairgrounds they have scheduled an event the night before with Springfield only 100 miles away from Sedalia.

While several LateModel drivers belong to both series this will be a neutral battle ground and actually a home coming as Southwestern Missouri has hosted several Mars events in the past and was also the home base of the MLRA in 1989 when founded by Mooneyham and Ken Essary.

The MARS Series originally founded by Mooney Starr and now under the Banner of Randy Mooneyham and the DirtCar Series will head into the Kuntz Memorial with 5 time Mars Champion Terry Phillips of Springfield, defending event winner Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Last season's Rookie of the Year Eric Turner of Hermitage,Rylan Long of Greenfield, longtime fan favorite Darrell Mooneyham of Aurora and Rookie contender Gary Christian of Oklahoma.

Heading the list for the Northern based MLRA Bad Boys is defending and 6 time MLRA Champion Al "The Shark" Purkey of Coffeyville, Kansas, current MLRA point leader Brad Looney of Republic, Chris Smyser of Lancaster, Rookie contender Zac Simmons of Erie,Kansas, the Hubert Brothers Evan and JD of Cross Timbers, Former NASCAR National Series champion Joe Kosiski of Omaha,Neb. and many others for Harriet and Cowboy Chancellor

Another group of drivers joining this event is the Southern Missouri Show-Me Racin Series with defending champion Justin Wells of Aurora. Last season in this event Wells finished second to event winner Payne after the two battled hard trying to run down then leader Terry Phillips. Other top runners from the Show-Me Series included National dirt Hall of Famer Ken "The Flying Farmer" Essary of Cape Fair,Chris Morelock of Springfield, Rookie Dwight Neihoff of Lockwood along with others.

Inside sources say that this event will be a Hoosier WRS D55 tire rule only.

The Kuntz Memorial will be supported by the SportMods, StreetStocks, Legends and the newly formed Midwest Modz Racing action will see the gates open at 5PM with hotlaps at 6:05 and Racing at 7PM.
