Merchant Scores Top 5 and Feature Win; Preps For Governors Cup

(West Monroe, Louisiana) Defending O'Reilly SUPR Late Model Series Champion Kenny Merchant took care of business this past weekend in SUPR Late Model Action, charging to a 4th place finish from the 15th starting position in the feature race on Friday night at Sterlington, Louisiana's USA Raceway. Kenny was able to pick up his second feature win of the season on Saturday night at Minden, Louisiana's Champion Park Speedway, as he led flag to flag, and never looked back.

"I knew I had to be on my toes when Kyle Cummings pulled into second place." said Merchant about his feature win on Saturday night. "Kyle is always good and Champion Park, and a good racer in general. I knew was he was there. I couldn't make even the slightest mistake or he was coming by."

Saturday night was bitter-sweet for Merchant, as he received news that his asphalt late model team mate, Donald "D.W." Goodman received life threatening injuries in a crash at Monroe Motor Speedway. Goodman would pass away the following morning due to the crash.

"It was really nice to get a flag to flag win for D.W. With circumstances what they were." said Merchant. "It really kinda puts you on mission to make a tribute to your friend and fellow racer."

Kenny plans on making his first trip to Mississippi in the 2010 racing season for this weekend's 50 lap, $300 to start, $5,000 to win Coca Cola Governor’s Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi. For more information on the race, visit www.MagnoliaMotorSpeedway.net .
