Area Late Model Stars set Sights on Dodge City by Dusty Wiegert
DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Only 3 days are left until racing in the Southwest Kansas area gets a serious shot of adrenaline.
This upcoming Friday and Saturday night May 7-8 the Late Model stars of the Midwest DIRTcar Late Model Series (MDLMS) and the Colorado Late Model Association DIRTcar Series (CLMA) storm into Dodge City for the inaugural running of the Six Shooter Showdown.
Each event will be a complete show, consisting of heat races, consolation races, and a main event A Feature.
Friday night's show will conclude with a 30 lap A Feature paying $1200 to the winner with a minimum of $200 to start.
Saturday night's Championship event will also be a 30 lap A Feature but pays $1500 to the winner with a minimum of $250 to start.
Last week MDLMS kicked off their 2010 campaign with a trip to the Wild West Speedway in Clinton, Oklahoma. Brad Looney made the long tow out from Missouri to western Oklahoma pay off with the feature win, his first with the series, and a clean sweep of the night, taking the win in the heat race, Alternative Pest Management Cash Dash, and the A Feature. Looney made mention that he is contemplating a trip out to the Six Shooter Showdown to pick up where he left off last week.
Last week also kicked off racing for Late Models in the Colorado area with the first weekly UMP sanctioned event at Colorado Motorsports Park in Byers, Colorado. Scott Lewis took the feature win to get a quick jump on the points lead in the weekly series. Lewis will be in attendance both nights of the Shootout to go for the title, along with his father Steve.
Also expected in attendance is Delbert "The Iceman" Smith out of Wichita, Kansas. Smith picked up 3 feature wins at the end of the 2009 season with the MDLMS and looks to be one of the contenders again this weekend.
Colorado driver and 2009 champion Dave Garmann is also one of the expected entries in the shootout.
Many drivers are expected for the 2 day event not only from Kansas and Colorado, but also Missouri, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.
Also in action both days will be the Mod Lite division racing for a relatively large purse. The local Thunder and Hornet divisions will be in action both nights as well with the IMCA Stock Cars joining the program on Saturday night.
The action kicks off Friday night with hot laps at 7PM and racing at 8PM. On Saturday a pre-race hot lap session will take place from 5:00 to 5:30 before hot laps at 6PM and racing at 7PM.
Admission prices each day are $15 for Adults, $10 for Seniors 65 & over, and $5 for kids 12 & under. Pit passes each day are $25.
