Rocky Top Raceway 2010 Preview: Late Models and Bombers By: T. J. Layne
COAL GROVE, OH-The first installment of Rocky Top Raceway 2010 Preview articles will focus on the Late Model and Bomber classes. Both classes have experienced changes for the 2010 season that should produce much higher car counts.
In the Late Model division, the decision was made to restructure and add $420 to the overall weekly purse. The new payout should increase Late Model car counts significantly, making for much better weekly shows. Several Late Model race teams have contacted RTR management expressing their support of the track this season with the new payout.
In addition to strengthening the weekly Late Model shows, there will also be several Late Model special event races in 2010. The biggest race of the season will come on Friday, May 7th with the $5,000 to win “Rocky Top 50”. This race will feature the largest overall purse for an unsanctioned Late Model show in RTR history. The race is also scheduled on a day where both national Late Model touring series are not racing.
The next Late Model special event will come on Friday, June 18th with the “GCP Engines Showdown”. This race will feature a 40 lap, $4,000 to win Late Model show along with specials for all other classes. This race is also the make-up race from the 2009 “Fall Classic”, a race that had 34 Late Models entered.
The most unique Late Model race in RTR history will come on Friday, July 9th with the “All Star Clash”. This race will feature a all star type format with three segments of racing, an invert, double file restarts, and a five lap shootout to end the race. The race will pay $300 to win the first 10 lap segment, $300 to win the second 10 lap segment, and a full feature payout for the final 5 lap segment.
2010 will also see the Late Models run topless for the first time at RTR. Friday, July 30th will feature the “Topless 25”, a $1,500 to win Late Model show. The final Late Model special event of the season will come on Saturday, October 9th with the “Fall Classic”. This race will feature a 35 lap, $2,500 to win Late Model show.
In the Bomber division, big changes have came for the 2010 season. A major rule change was announced in January that will see the 2010 RTR Bomber class follow K-C Raceway Hobby Stock rules. The rules change will allow cars from multiple tracks and areas to race at RTR, giving the track a large pool of available cars. This rule change should boost car counts significantly for the 2010 season.
The rules change should also produce the most competitive Bomber class in RTR history. With Bombers coming from K-C, I-77, eastern Kentucky, and the Jackson area joining the already very competitive RTR Bombers, the result should be incredible racing week in and week out. RTR management has also been informed of several new Bombers in the area coming out to compete with cars under the new rules. The Bomber division could very well end up being the most competitive class at RTR in 2010.
The Bomber class will also have some big special event races during the 2010 season. Friday, June 18th will feature the 25 lap, $1,000 to win “GCP Engines Showdown”. The two previous $1,000 to win Bomber specials at RTR have featured some very memorable races with Danny Hamilton and Wayne Hughes taking the big wins. The Bombers will also have an $800 to win show to end the season on Saturday, October 9th.
