Ross Camponovo Has Strong Winternationals Run; Moulton Up Next Clarksdale, Mississippi (02/15/10) – “The Big Boss” Ross Camponovo is coming off a brief venture to Speedweeks at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Florida) and East Bay Raceway Park (Tampa, Florida), where he opened a lot of eyes around the sport.
Ross Camponovo entered a Super Late Model event at Volusia Speedway Park for the first time ever on Monday night, February 8th in the $7,000 to win opener for the UMP DIRTCar Series. With 67 of the nation’s top Super Late Models in action Ross qualified 3rd fastest in his group. An inversion of four was drawn for heat race action, which put him starting outside front row. Ross would fight off early advances from Boom Briggs and Eric Jacobsen before driving away from the field en route to the heat race win, which earned him the 6th starting position for the main event around the big 1/2 mile. Ross would battle an ill-handling race car in the feature and would ultimately retire to a 24th place finish on the 22nd lap. Despite not having the feature performance that the team had hoped for, everyone at RC Motorsports was quite excited with their opening night performance at Volusia.
Tuesday’s program (February 9th) at Volusia was nixed by Mother Nature. Ross had originally planned to compete for the rest of the week at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida in the 39th UMP DIRTCar Nationals, but family business obligations forced him to head back to Mississippi on Wednesday.
The week before the Volusia events the team traveled to East Bay Raceway in Tampa, Florida for the DART Winternationals. They entered their first event on Wednesday night, February 3rd with a $5,000 to win, 30 lap event. Forty-nine Super Late Models entered the event, and the night got off to a good start for Ross, who timed in 11th fastest in his group to earn the sixth starting spot in his heat. However, he would receive damage in his heat race, which brought his night to a disappointing early end.
On Thursday night, February 4th, RC Motorsports entered the season opener for the Lucas Oil Super Late Model Series at East Bay Raceway Park as 57 entries signed in for the $10,000 to win event. Ross turned in a strong qualifying effort for the second straight night, and would finish 5th in his heat race and 5th in his b-main, which left him short of qualifying for the feature. He battled at the front of the pack in the Strawberry Dash, but with only the winner transferring to the main event, his night came to an early end. Despite not making the feature, it was still a strong night for Camponovo.
The next event that is tentatively on tap for R.C. Motorsports is the 1st Annual Melt Down at Moulton Speedway in Moulton, Alabama on Saturday, February 20th. The special event will be highlighted by a $2,000 to win/$150 to start, 35 lap event. For more information, please visit
