FROM 12TH TWICE, ANDY ANDERSON SCORES BOWMAN SPECIAL AND HAGERSTOWN’S SCHEDULED FEATURE

HAGERSTOWN, MD – Andy Anderson was driving a Rocket that turned into a missile Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway when he took top honors in the postponed (from May 18th) Bill Bowman Special by leading the final 13 laps of the 31-lap event and then topped off his evening with another dominant run in the regular scheduled 20-lap feature on Mayberry Night, both efforts coming from the 12th starting position. It was the fourth triumph of the season for the Martinsburg, WV driver aboard the Doug and Dougie Timmons Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman.

“This is actually the first I’ve ever got to run the Bowman race,” Anderson said. “We go back a long ways. I used to sell him parts all the time when I worked at Ernie’s (Salvage Yard). There wasn’t a day go by that Bill didn’t call or at least come down. I’m just glad we got to make this race up and run it for Bill.”

The Bowman event was settled in a one lap charge to the checkered in which Anderson beat eighth starter Paul Cursey by .99 second and in the scheduled event, he had pulled away to a 5.082 second triumph over pole sitter Billy Farmer.

Other winners included Darrin Younker of Berkley Springs WV in the Ernie D’s pure stocks, his second for the season where he is celebrating his 25th season of racing and also Tom Caravello of Baltimore, who posted his first ever oval track feature win in the D & D Auto Recycling hobby stocks.

Starting fourth, Scott Palmer had led the initial seven laps of the Bowman Special on May 18th before the rain shower arrived. For the restart, Paul Cursey, who initially started eighth and was second, charged past Palmer to take command while Anderson took second from Palmer on the tenth lap while Cursey was 2.4 seconds ahead.

Anderson kept reeling Cursey in as Cursey got to the rear cars four laps later and Anderson closed in traffic. He got past Cursey to lead the 19th lap while Terry Flaherty got past Palmer for third two laps later but was more than five seconds behind Cursey.

Yellows with two and one to go tightened the field, but Anderson had no problem speeding away from Cursey to get the checkered .99 second ahead with Flaherty holding to third over Palmer and Mike Walls.

“We had a good car,” Anderson said. “We got in that lapped traffic there and I had to go where he didn’t go. We bumped a little coming off four but I’m sure he knew it was just racing.”

Chaz Walls was sixth over Frankie Plessinger, Wayne Walls Jr., Justin Weaver and 21st starter, Will Rowe. Eleventh finisher James Lichliter came from 24th and was the Liberty Auto and Tire hard charger. Heats went to Walls Jr., Flaherty and Chad Myers.

Billy Farmer and John Baker occupied the front row for the Mayberry Night feature with deputy sheriff Barney Fife impersonator Scott Epperson spending the night and providing entertainment.

Farmer grabbed the lead as Flaherty took second from his third staring spot. Anderson passed Cursey following a fourth lap restart and was third by a fifth lap red flag when Nick Pappas made hard contact with the first turn fence. On the restart, Flaherty’s car would not refire and he was pushed pitside.

Anderson moved up for the restart and immediately blasted past Farmer and by the 14th lap when he caught the rear of the field, was 5.84 seconds ahead of Farmer.

Anderson worked traffic with caution, but also with ease as he continued uncontested until the finish and was just over five seconds ahead of Farmer and 11th starting Justin Weaver the current point leader. Baker and Kyle Lear were next.

“It helped with Flaherty dropping out, sorry he had bad luck,” Anderson said. “We had a couple good breaks starting from 12th. It helps when you get a couple good breaks going your way. This car is good pretty much of the time. All we did tonight was put fuel in it. It’s just a good car.”

Cursey ended sixth followed by Robby Black (10th), Walls Jr., Michael Walls (14th) and Frankie Plessinger. Heats went to Anderson, Baker and Farmer with Chad Myers winning the consy.
Palmer was the Liberty Auto and Tire hard charger with an advance from 23rd to 13th.

Drew Fitzsimmons led the pure stocks until the 12th lap when Darrin Younker advanced from ninth to second by lap nine in the nonstop feature. He made the winning pass with three laps to go and won by .532 seconds over Fitzsimmons. Kevin Boyer in third was the hard charger with Rick Stouffer and Tony Catlett completing the top five. Fitzsimmons and Boyer were the heat winners.

Gary Proctor ran the fast lap of 25.720 for the special hobby stock feature and with a two car invert, Tom Caravello began on the pole and beat Proctor off the line to lead all 15 laps. With one to go, Proctor was collected when a rear car spun as Jason Sarver tried to unseat Caravello on the restart, but two lengths separated the two at the finish. Dylan Welsh, Joe Rodgers and Kenny Thomas were next.
