The final Grand National Feature of the year started with an 8 car inversion, putting the 95 of Donny Kulow (Plymouth) and 8J Matt Jackson (Sheboygan) out front. The rest of the top 6 were 8 Brad Juckem (Chilton), 98N Kevin Naidl (Whitelaw), 69T Tim Thompson (Campbellsport), and 21 Kevin Lubach (Plymouth). Kulow grabbed the lead after green, while Juckem and Thompson moved forward to challege and Jackson dropped back after something came apart in the rear suspension. Juckem got around Kulow quickly, as Thompson followed him through for 2nd. Brian Cesar was moving up quickly from deep in the field, as Naidl moved in to chase down the 2 leaders. Yellow flew on Lap 8 however, bunching up the field after Lubach spun out in Turn 4 and was sent to the rear. Thompson led the field to the restart, followed by Juckem, Naidl, Kulow, Ryan Minster (Sheboygan), and Jackson. Naidl worked his way around Juckem, while Cesar picked up 2 spots on the restart to show in the top 5. The field settled in with 2 car battles and with 5 to go it was still Thompson, Naidl, and Juckem showing the way. Thompson rolled under the checkers for the victory, Naidl, Juckem, Cesar, Minster, Kulow, and 2012 Champion Steven Ruh following him across. Hard charger of the race went to Cesar picking up 10 positions, runner up to Thompson & Ruh with 4 spots each. An inversion of 8 cars put the 7 of Jeff Bender (Plymouth) and 1 Jeremy Hebel (Two Rivers) on the front row, with 64 Mike Zitzer (Sheboygan), 28 Dave Gauger Sr (Two Rivers), 711x Jason Jensen (Eagle River), and 47D Douglas Engleking rounded out the top 6. Hebel led the first lap with Gauger and Bender in his tire tracks. Kraig Koehler (Francis Creek) moved up quickly to challenge Engleking, and completing the pass set off chasing Hebel and Gauger. Gauger rolled by Hebel on Lap 4 while Joe Schwister (Seymour) moved into the top 5. Gauger lengthened his lead and begain lapping cars. Chris Blanke left the track on Lap 7 with issues and did not return. Koehler pushed his way around Hebel with 3 to go and the race finished with Gauger taking his first win of the year. The final EWSC MSA 360 Sprintcar Race of the season had an invert of 8 putting 08 John Krebsbach (Cascade) on the pole with 6K Kurt Davis (West Allis) next to him. 5J Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam), 99 Kyle Marten (Sheboygan Falls), Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum), and Al Schlafer (Sussex). Davis took the lead on the first lap with Marten tucking in behind him for second. Schultz moved past the 08 and inoto 3rd. Tim Haddy had to head to the pits with mechanical problems and was done for the night after 2 laps. Davis continued to lead as 25 Danny Schlafer (Sussex) started coming forward, trying to catch the leaders and fighting lapped traffic at the same time. At the midway mark Davis had the field covered, with Marten, Schultz, Krebsbach, and Schmidt holding down the top 5, with Luedke and Wenninger just outside. Martens night ended one lap later though as he broke high in Turns 1 & 2 and was done for the night. Davis brought the field back to green with Luedke making a bold move and moving into 2nd and engaging in a battle with Schultz. With 5 laps to go, 2012 Champion Schmidt overtook Schultz for 3rd, while D. Schlafer used the highest line to get into the top 5. Davis breezed across the line for the win followed by Luedke, Schmidt, Schultz, Danny Schlafer, Krebsbach, Al Schlafer and Scotty Neitzel (Beaver Dam) all on the lead lap. An inversion of 6 for the Late Model field put Nick Cochart (Casco) on the pole and 33 Ron Stroika (Mukwonago) outside of him. The remainder of the top 6 were 74 Russ Scheffler (Waukesha), Paul Parker (Kaukauna), 8 Bob Cullen (Chilton), and 15S Rick Scheffler (Waukesha). A wide, slick track awaited the racers as they hist the track, and they made the best of it putting on a clinic in car control as they darted in and out and ran 25 laps green to checkered in a fantastic way to end the season. Paul Parker jumped out front from the green, first holding of the challenge of Stroika, then dueling side by side with Russ for several laps. Russ finally established position in front of Parker and took over the top spot. Jim Schmidt (Cleveland) and Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls), both relegated to the rear of the field by an incident they were involved in, were steadily moving forward from the rear of the pack. Russ quickly began lapping cars, working through with no contact, with Paul and Stroika hanging in his tracks. At the mid way mark it was Russ showing the way, Paul in the 10X, Stroika, Rick,Tom Naeyaert (Shawano), and Cullen. Jim and Schueffner had cracked the top 10, with Jim up to 8th and Schueffner in 10th. With no cautions to bunch the field back together, the drivers had to work that much harder to gain positions, and the fast, rubbered over track made them use finesse instead of brute force. Crossing under the checkers to cap off his Championship season, Russ was followed through by Paul Parker, Stroika, Rick Scheffler, Naeyaert, Schmidt, Cullen, Pete Parker, Schueffner, and Rezutek. Tienor Friday, August 31st, Manitowoc, WI. – The opening night of the Labor Day Weekend Championships was warm and windy as the drivers and crews readied for the final 2 nights of the 2012 season. GRAND NATIONALS HEAT 1 - 1, Ryan Minster. 2, Mark Fieber. 3, Jason Winkler. 4, Steven Weber. 5, Steven Ruh. 6, Chris Gilson. 7, Paul Perronne. HEAT 2 - 1, Daniel Schulmacher. 2, Mark Kuhfuss. 3, Brad Juckem. 4, Loren Lubach. 5, Don Schumacher. 6, Kevin Naidl. 7, Michael Gilson. The Grand National Feature was led to the track by Chris Gilson (Elkhart Lake) and Kevin Naidl (Reedsville), Don Schumacher (Oconomowoc) and Steven Ruh (Elkhart Lake) the points leader sat on Row 2. Naidl moved into the lead after jumping out on Gilson, but spun out on the second lap giving the lead to Ruh. Naidl pitted after the restart, but would return to the track after the next caution on Lap 4 for contact and spin between Schumacher and Phil Coppersmith (Plymouth). Ruh led the field to the restart, followed by Mark Fieber (Cascade), Gilson, Jason Winkler (Sheboygan), and Brad Juckem (Chilton). Ryan Minster (Sheboygan) was charging hard from his 12th starting position, as he and Juckem got around Winkler and Gilson on the restart. At the midway point it was Ruh comfortably out front, Fieber, Juckem, Minster and Winkler. Lap 11 produced another yellow as Schumacher and Steven Weber (Plymouth) got together, sending both cars to the rear of the field for the restart. Ruh lead them back to green for the final time, Fieber, Juckem, Minster, and Winkler still hanging on to their spots. Juckem and Winkler made short work of Fieber as both swung around him picking up a spot. Winkler slipped up a lap later and Coppersmith slid into 3rd place, trying to catch Juckem and Ruh. Racing under checkers, it was Ruh, Juckem, Coppersmith, Fieber, Minster, Winkler, and Daniel Schumacher (Milwaukee). Hard Charger to Minster picking up 7 positions, runner up Fieber picked up 6 spots. Newcomer Joe Schwister (Seymour) and Douglas Engleking (Menominee Falls) held down the second row. Ruh jumped in front to lead the first lap, followed by Engleking setting up a great battle between the top 2 in points. Bender, Ray Fuller (Manitowoc) and Schwister rounded out the top 5. Five laps in the top 5 was holding steady as only Schwister and Fuller swapped positions. Ruh and Engleking were racing hard at the front of the pack, mixing it up cleanly as neither wanted to lose their position in the standings. Dustin Richards (Bristol) slid around Fuller and Bender into the top 5. Schwister got around Engleking with 2 to go, and thats the way the race ended, with Ruh taking another victory, Schwister, Engleking, Richards, and Bender in the top 5. The 97 of Justin Schmidt (Cleveland) and 33 Ron Stroika (Mukwonago) led the WDLMA Late Models by EWSC to the track for their feature event. The 70 of Craig Schueffner (Sheboygan Falls) and 27 Justin Hirt (Tigerton), 9N Tom Naeyaert (Shawano) and 8R Billy Rezutek (Big Bend) made up the rest of the top 6. Schmidt grabbed the first lap lead, with Schueffner tucking in behind him for 2nd, but didn't wait long to make a move and took the lead on the second lap. Lap 4 produced a yellow flag as a pile up in Turn 4 claimed the cars of Jim Juneau (Brookfield), Jim Rychtik (Port Washington), and Jim Schmidt (Cleveland), with all 3 cars being done for the evening. The restart order showed Schueffner still in the lead, Justin Schmidt, Stroika, Naeyaert, Hirt, and Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) in the Top 6. Stroika, Hirt, and Naeyaert were battling hard, attempting to claim 2nd and chase down Schueffner. The black and green 74 of Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) slid into the top 5 on Lap 8, and Naeyaert finally moved into the runner-up spot on Lap 10. Schueffner started to put lapped traffic between him and his pursuers as Tony Peterson (Big Bend) was the first car to go a lap down. At the half-way point, it was the 70 still out front followed by Naeyaert, Stroika, Hirt, and Ru. Scheffler, with Ri. Scheffler and Rezutek just outside the top 5. Hirt was finally able to work around the blue, white, and red 33 of Stroika, and started to chase down the front 2, with Russ getting around Stroika a lap later. At 3 to go, the Menominee Casino 9N was able to get a nose out front of Schueffner and make it stick and claimed the lead, while Hirt used the high groove to make his way around Schueffner. Naeyaert crossed under the checkers for the win, with Hirt in 2nd, Schueffner, Russ, Stroika, Rick, Rezutek, 28R Mark Rose (Elcho), Schmidt, and Jim Letizia (Milwaukee). Hard Charger for the race was Russ picking up 7 spots and runner up Naeyaert picking up 4. The MSA 360 Sprintcars were last to the track this evening, with the 15M of Justin Miller (Plymouth) and 74V of Randy Brunette (Chilton) sitting on the front row, while 53 Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum), 99 Kyle Marten (Sheboygan Falls), 97 Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) and 88 Mark Krueger (Green Bay) rounding out the top 6. Marten leaped to the lead from 4th place after one lap, but the race went red quickly as Krueger ended up on his lid in Turn 4, he emerged unhurt but the car was finished for the night. Miller and John Krebsbach (Cascade) darted into the pits for repairs but would return for the restart. Marten led the field to the restart, followed by Brunette, Wenninger, Danny Schlafer (Sussex), who had moved all the way from 12th starting position, and Jeremy Schultz (Beaver Dam). Wenninger and Schultz both raced around Brunette and took off after the leader Marten, but were slowed by another yellow on lap 8 as Schultz lost the engine on his 5J. Marten again led the field to the restart, with Wenninger, Schlafer, Brunette, TJ Luedke (Plymouth) and Wondra in the top 6. His lead was short lived though as 2 laps later he broke his rear end and handed the lead to Wenninger. The Wenninger Motorsports 53 led the field down to another green, followed by Schlafer, Kurt Davis (West Allis, all the way from 18th starting spot), Luedke, and Brunette. Scotty Thiel (Sheboygan) rocketed into 4th after the restart, dropping Brunette a spot, while Luedke shot into the pits with problems. Ben Schmidt (Howards Grove) fought his way past Brunette for 5th as the field came past the line at the mid way mark. Wenninger and Schlafer put on a clinic as they started to encounter lapped cars, battling their way through using every part of the race track. With 5 to go Wenninger and Schlafer were locked in a tight race, with Schmidt up to 3rd, Davis and Wondra. On Lap 28 of 30, Schlafer worked his way around Wenninger, then rocketing across the line for the win with Wenninger holding on for 2nd, Schmidt, Davis, and Wondra the top 5 and the only cars on the lead lap. Hard Charger honors to Kurt Davis picking up 14 spots, and runner up Danny Schlafer with 11 positions.
