Title: Independence Motor Speedway - 7/28 Results Post by LMR on 07/29/12 at 2:14pm Independence Motor Speedway July 28, 2012 ________________________________________ Smock scores third win of the season at Independence Motor Speedway by Ryan Clark INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 28) Travis Smock and Adam Johnson are getting dialed in at just the right time. Both drivers will be taking back-to-back wins into the final month of the season at Independence Motor Speedway. Smock, who topped the 25-lap IMCA Late Model feature, earned his third win of the season, while Johnsons second straight win in the IMCA Modifieds was his third victory in the last four weeks and his fourth win of the year. In just his second night out this season, Dirk Hamilton led during the early stages of the Late Model main. From his pole position start, Hamilton quickly distanced himself from the field while Smock rocketed from a fourth row start into the second position just prior to a lap three caution. On the restart, Hamilton again set the pace while Smock pursued, sweeping to the outside of the leader one lap later. As Smock pulled away, Dean Wagner and Curt Martin made their way through traffic and into the top three. Caution slowed action on lap 13, allowing Martin to work past Wagner on the ensuing restart. Meanwhile, points leader Tyler Bruening was running the high side into contention from a fifth row start. Bruening made his way into third one lap later, just prior to the next caution. Bruening and Martin battled for the runner-up spot while Smock pulled away as three more stoppages kept the field bunched in the final laps. Although Martin and Bruening swapped the runner-up position, Smock drove away to the victory. Martin held on for second ahead of Bruening. Josh Sherbon showed the way at the drop of the green in the Modified feature. He paced the field through a pair of early cautions as Johnson settled into second on lap four. Johnson chased the leader for a couple more circuits before making his bid for the lead on lap seven. Johnson then drove away from the field to score the victory ahead of Sherbon. John Emerson took the lead on the second lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature and then held off persistent pressure from points leader Sean Johnson to take his fourth win of the season. Johnson ran second ahead of Jason Hocken. Following a late restart, Tyler Droste worked past Travis Peterson to take his fourth win of the year in the IMCA SportMod division. Peterson crossed the line in second, however he failed post-race inspection, which moved Sam Wieben into the runner-up spot. Curt Graham led every step of the way in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature to take his first-ever win in Independence. Scott Pippert made a late pass to secure second place ahead of Benji Irvine. Points leader Justin Stander survived an early spin and made a terrific run through the 23-car field. He came home fourth and held onto the points lead. Merv Chandler and Steve Miedke battled side-by-side throughout most of the IMCA Sport Compact feature. When the checkers waved, Chandler held on by a car-length to score the exciting win. Next Saturday is Veridian Credit Union Night at the Races. Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 6 and racing to follow. On Monday, August 6, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will make its second-ever appearance in Independence. IMCA Modifieds will also be competing for a $1,000 winners share. Gates open at 4 p.m. on August 6, with hot laps at 6:45 and qualifying to follow.
