Chris Ferguson Kicks Off 2012 with a Pair of Top 3 Speedweeks Finishes

Sylvania, Georgia – With his 2012 Warrior 1G Race Car not yet completed, Chris Ferguson would have to make his 2012 Speedweeks debut at Screven Motor Speedway’s Winter Freeze event in a crate engine powered Late Model fielded by Georgia car owner Mike Mercer. In anticipation of the event Ferguson arrived at Screven Motor Speedway early Friday afternoon to take in preliminary competition. Ferguson was pleasantly surprised when former Starrette Trucking teammate John Henderson, who was competing in the $20,000 to win World of Outlaws Late Model portion of the show, offered him the opportunity to pilot one of his cars in the local Late Model class at Screven. “I really appreciate John offering me the chance to drive his car at Screven. He obviously had a very good piece under me and we nearly won the race. It was a lot of fun and we got some laps on the track which gave us some good information for Saturday’s race.” Ferguson said.

Ferguson indeed just missed picking up his first win of the season in his first race on track. After starting in the 4th position and quickly taking over 3rd Ferguson trailed leader Sean Meeks and Gib Gibbons when an early caution flag flew. On the restart Ferguson swept to the outside and overtook Meeks for the lead down the back straightaway. But as the laps began to wane Ferguson knew he might be in trouble. “The car kept getting looser and I knew it would be tough to keep the lead. Gib got by us there and then (Ben) Faircloth got us on the last lap. When we got back to the pits we found the j-bar had come loose and fell down. Either way it was fun and I appreciate John having enough trust in me to let me wheel his car.” Ferguson added.

On Saturday night for the $2500 to win FASTRAK vs. NeSmith Crate Challenge Ferguson climbed aboard a more familiar mount in the Mercer owned Barry Wright Race Car. “We were a little off in time trials and we adjusted on it and made it better. We ran okay in the B-Main and the car was awesome in the feature.” Ferguson found a sweet spot in the middle of the track while most of those in front of him were running around the bottom. “When we were running our feature there was actually a couple of ice spots on the track and you had to be really careful. I slipped a couple of times and probably cost us a shot at the win. There was a groove just above the brown where I could get traction and keep up my momentum and that allowed me to pass a bunch of cars. I can’t complain about a 15th to 2nd run. And it definitely gives us some good momentum going into a new season.” Ferguson concluded.
