Title: ULMA Has a New Point Leader Heading into the Final Five Races Post by LMR on 09/01/10 at 3:53am Sam Stoecklin ULMA Media Relations August 31, 2010 ULMA Has a New Point Leader Heading into the Final Five Races of the Season Only five possible points-earning nights remain during the quest for the 2010 ULMA Championship and heading into this weekend, the association has a new leader as Vance Wilson takes over the top position from Jason Bodenhamer, who had held the lead for the past month. Wilson recorded his association-leading tenth victory in a make-up feature event at Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri last Friday night and took the lead in the process even though he did not compete in the regularly scheduled night’s main event. Meanwhile, Bodenhamer picked up a fifth-place run for the weekend and failed to improve any of his fifteen best finishes of the year. Currently, Wilson has twelve first-place point finishes (2 from double point nights), one second, and two thirds counting as his fifteen best. Bodenhamer has eight first-place point finishes (1 from a double point’s night) and seven second-place finishes counting toward his fifteen best. It is likely Wilson will compete at both Callaway Raceway and Lucas Oil Speedway; this Saturday is the final points-earning night at Lucas Oil Speedway as the track’s regular season comes to a close. This weekend Bodenhamer is expected to race only at his home track of Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). The following weekend, only Callaway Raceway on Friday and CMS on Saturday, will be competing as the season ends at CMS on September 11th. Bodenhamer has experienced some mechanical woes recently in his Derek Nevels’ owned familiar #88; however, a fellow racer has stepped in to help Bodenhamer the last couple of weeks with John Farmer loaning Bodenhamer the use of his car. Bodenhamer won the championship in 2008 and is trying to become the first two-time ULMA champion. Had Wilson joined the association at the beginning of the season he would have the maximum points possible with well over fifteen recorded victories. As mentioned earlier, Wilson claimed his tenth win of the year last weekend in the make-up event at Callaway Raceway but did not start the scheduled weekly feature for the night. Ten of fourteen drivers on hand were ULMA member drivers. Trace Westling came away with a third-place run in the make-up event with Zeke Langley, Cliff Powell, Jeff Schlup, James Stafford, and Ashley Lancaster also coming away with recorded top ten finishes. For the weekly feature event, Schlup claimed his third win of the year over Bob Test who finished a strong second. Westling, Powell, Cox, Langley, and Stafford again recorded top ten finishes among the nine ULMA members of fifteen drivers on hand. Two more weekends of ULMA points-earning races are scheduled at Callaway including this Friday, September 3 and one final time on Friday, September 10. Be sure to log onto the track’s official website at www.callawayraceways.com. Every year it seems that one driver is finally able to shake the bad luck and close out the year with a series of strong finishes and that is just what Jon Binning has done over the last three weeks as the Warrensburg driver claimed his third straight, and fourth overall victory of the season at CMS. A stellar field of drivers was on hand including Bodenhamer, Wilson, Tommy Cordray, Brett Wood, Steve Clancy, Kevin Coyne, Bob Test, Shawn Rayfield, and Bob King. But it didn’t matter to Binning as he smoked all of them for his convincing win. Test again came away with another second-place run for the weekend as he was the only driver able to keep pace with the winner until lapped traffic became an issue. Wood finished a strong third, with Cordray, who had not been to the track in a couple of years, finished a stellar fourth with Bodenhamer fifth. There were 15 member drivers present among the 18 drivers on hand. Two more weeks of points-earning finishes are possible at CMS beginning this Saturday, September 4th and continuing on CMS championship night, and final ULMA points-earning night of the year on Saturday, September 11th where the title could very well likely be decided at the conclusion of the late model feature. Visit CMS online at www.centralmissourispeedway.net for complete information. Lucas Oil Speedway will wrap up its regular championship season this Saturday night, August 4th with one more chance for ULMA points to be earned at the track. Congratulations are in order for Tommy Cordray of Browning, Missouri for repeating as the tracks late model champion. Cordray, along with Brothers Harlen and Andy Kennedy, Wilson, Jeremy Kelley, leading ULMA Rookie of the Year Chris Cox, and long-time ULMA competitor Danny Lorton are expected to compete one final time this weekend at the speedway.
