Great Weekend For CFR: Chub Frank Wins At Lernerville, Peter Mantha Jr. Breaks Through At Cornwall

BEAR LAKE, PA – July 26, 2010 – What a weekend it was for Chub Frank Racing.

First, on Friday night (July 23), Chub Frank made another triumphant visit to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. Then on Sunday evening one of Frank’s “boys,” French Canadian Peter Mantha Jr., drove his CFR-prepared car to his first career dirt Late Model victory at Cornwall (Ont.) Motor Speedway.

“We won twice this weekend – me and Peter,” said a proud Frank. “I’m pretty happy about that.”

Frank, 48, of Bear Lake, Pa., started the weekend off with his third win of the season at Lernerville, the four-tenths-mile oval outside Pittsburgh that the driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ frequents when the World of Outlaws Late Model Series is idle. He entered Friday’s weekly dirt Late Model action there to shake down a newly-constructed Rocket car that he plans to enter in the five-race WoO LMS Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek, which runs from July 27-Aug. 1.

“We just finished it up last week,” Frank said of his winning machine, a chassis that was driven in 2009 by Pennsylvanian Gregg Satterlee and recently obtained by Frank from Bob Close. “We sold the car we ran out west (during the four-race WoO LMS ‘Wild West Tour’ that stretched from July 7-10) so we had to put another car together, and this one was sitting in the shop.

“The car was good,” continued Frank, who won his heat race and led the 25-lap feature from flag-to-flag. “There’s some things I have to change to get more comfortable in it, but I’m happy with it. It’s got potential.”

Frank was even happier, of course, about the performance Mantha authored in Sunday night’s Ontario Dirt Late Model Series event at Cornwall. A veteran DIRTcar 358-Modified racer from Gatineau, Que., Mantha met Frank three years ago during a WoO LMS event at Quebec’s Autodrome Drummond and the two men quickly developed a close relationship. Frank helped point Mantha in the right direction and ultimately took over the preparation of Mantha’s dirt Late Model, which Mantha enters in a handful of races each season. When Mantha isn’t racing, his car serves as a backup for Frank, whose team boasts sponsorship from Mantha’s Hino Toyota dealerships.

Mantha sought setup tips from Frank by cell phone throughout Sunday’s action at Cornwall. After he overtook Greg Oakes and David Scott to score his emotional first-ever dirt Late Model triumph, he called Frank again with the big news.

“I’ve always tried to explain to him that if he sticks with it, things will come around for him,” Frank said of Mantha. “He’s been learning, and on Sunday he did everything right.

“I’m happy for him – I’m always happy when guys we help do well.”

Frank will spend the next week racing five times in a six-day span as part of the WoO LMS Ohio-Pennsylvania Speedweek. The swing includes events at Central PA Speedway in Clearfield, Pa., on July 27; Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, on July 28; Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park on July 30; Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, on July 31; and Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., on Aug. 1.
