Moyer Hopes to Continue Roll with Visit to Magnolia Motor Speedway this Weekend

By James Essex
The hottest dirt late model driver in the country, Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR hopes to continue what has become a habit – ending up in victory lane as the 52-year-old National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer comes to Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS this weekend for the “Clash at the Mag” an event he won last year holding off Chris Wall of Holden, LA for the win.

With a $20,000 paycheck up for grabs, Moyer with a win Saturday would surpass $200,000 in winnings this season. The terrific season Moyer is having makes one think that his plans for retirement may be put off a little longer. After all he has 16 wins this year (730 for his career) and $197,000 in first place winnings alone already this year.

Moyer has picked up wins in the sports’ highest paying race, the $100,000 to win Dirt Late Model Dream at Tony Stewart’s Eldora (OH) Speedway and the $20,000 to win Illini 100 at Farmer City (IL) Raceway back in April to go along with his recent hot streak in the UMP Summernationals where he has captured six wins in only seven appearances.

Moyer’s competition will be tough this weekend at the Johnny Stokes-promoted Magnolia Motor Speedway where the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be sanctioning the race that pays $20,000 to win, $10,000 for second and $1,000 to start as the track hosts not only the best of the Lucas Oil Series, but the top drivers in the region at a track where they drew 46 late models this past Sunday.

While Moyer looks to extend his winning streak which stands at three he will go head-to-head with the other titan of the sport in Mooresburg, TN’s Scott Bloomquist who is leading the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship Points Standings. Bloomquist comes into the race with a 170-point lead over Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN.

Another hot driver coming into the event at Magnolia will be 4-time LOLMDS Champion, Earl Pearson Jr of Jacksonville, FL. Pearson who won twice in Ohio last weekend with the series has another driver hot on his heels in trying to hold on to third place in the points as Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC has climbed to fourth in points.

Cook who finished second to Moyer in the Dirt Late Model Dream last month earning $20,000 has won four Lucas Oil Series events in ’10 and he has won nine overall this year. Cook, who last year captured a career-high 12 victories and is on target to surpass that total this year won the $30,000 DART Show-Me 100 in May at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO.

Action will get underway at Magnolia Motor Speedway on Friday Night, July 9th with Time Trials and Heat Races with the B-Mains and $20,000 to win main event to be held on Saturday Night, July 10th.
