Title: Volunteer Racing Series at Ponderosa for Pete Abell Memorial Post by LMR on 06/17/10 at 2:27pm Ponderosa Speedway 365 Phillips Lane Junction City, Kentucky 40440 2010 Official Media Release #40 (For Immediate Distribution: June 17, 2010) Contact- Michael Despain (Mdespain7@aol.com and/or dirttrackracing@hotmail.com) Volunteer Racing Series at Ponderosa Speedway for Pete Abell Memorial on Friday June 25 Junction City, KY-June 17, 2010- Ponderosa Speedway track promoters Larry, Chad, and Sarah Yantz will host the Volunteer Racing Series at “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” on Friday June 25 in the tour’s inaugural visit to the 3/8 mile D-shaped red clay oval and first-ever visit to Kentucky for the 15th Annual Pete Abell Memorial, paying $3,000 to win the 40 lap main event. On Friday June 25, the Volunteer Racing Series will be in action at Ponderosa Speedway in a full program of practice, time trials, qualifying heats, B-Mains, and the 40 lap, $3,000 to win 15th Annual Pete Abell Memorial A-Main event. Also on the June 25 racing program in weekly racing series competition will be the Bob Allen Motor Mall Pro Late Models for $600 to win, Clayton Homes UMP Modifieds for $600 to win, and the D&D Pallet Recyclers UMP Sportsman for $300 to win. It will also be double track points for the Bob Allen Motor Mall Pro Late Model division again on Friday June 25. Activities for this June 25 event at Ponderosa Speedway will see the pit area open at 4:00 p.m., with the grandstand area open at 5:00 p.m. A mandatory drivers meeting takes place at 6:45 p.m., with practice set for 7:00 p.m. Time trials will begin at 7:30 p.m., with racing taking the green flag at 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices in the general admission area will be $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and children under age 6 are free. A pit pass will be $30. The Pete Abell Memorial event was added to the Ponderosa Speedway schedule in 1995 about a year after long-time Central Kentucky racer and loyal track competitor Pete Abell lost his life in an automobile accident while returning home from Ponderosa Speedway after having raced that evening. Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY would be victorious in the inaugural PAM event back in 1995. C.J. Rayburn of Whiteland, IN would claim the race win in 1996, with Lanigan returning to victory lane in the contest for the second time in 1997. Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN would be the winner of the 1998 race, while Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN would score the race win in 1999. Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY become a winner of the race in 2000, with Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN winning the 2001 version of the PAM. The event would not be contested in 2002, with the race returning in 2003 and Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY scoring the victory. Mother nature would win the proceedings in 2004, while Sadorus, IL native Steve Hillard winning the 2005 event. Chris Combs of Isom, KY would score what would be his biggest career win at that time with the win in the 2006 event, while Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY would claim the race win on his way to the 2007 track championship. Victor Lee of Danville, KY would win the 2008 race in dominant fashion, while Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would put his name in the record book to become the 12th different driver to win this race, with Lanigan being the only repeat winner of the Pete Abell Memorial. Ponderosa Speedway is located just off of 365 Phillips Lane on the Boyle/Lincoln County border, outside of Junction City, KY, just minutes from Danville, KY. Larry, Chad, and Sarah Yantz are the track promoters and present dirt track sports entertainment on Friday evenings from April through early October.
