“KID ROCKET” RICHARDS SCORES SECOND CONSECUTIVE HAGERSTOWN OPENER

Hagerstown, Md. – Defending World of Outlaw late model series champion Josh “Kid Rocket” Richards, Shinnstown, WV, shook down a brand new Ernie Davis Ford powered Rocket and scored Hagerstown Speedways first late model point show of the season and repeated as the opening day winner.

Four time 2009 winner Ashley Barrett of Shippensburg, Pa. led the final two circuits to score that victory in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman division while defending Ernie D’s pure stock champion, Hagerstown’s Mike Warrenfeltz scored his 75th career triumph. Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, Md. led all the way and ended 16.5 seconds ahead in the 30 lap Enduro Dash.

Richards began fifth in the six car inversion and took over second when Brian Booze spun on lap five. He shifted his focus to Frankie Plessinger and began his bid for the lead, sticking his nose under Plessinger on several occasions, once taking the point, only for Plessinger to regain and lead for another several laps. Plessinger finally relinquished the top spot on lap 16 as Richards continued on to score the victory by 1.28 seconds.

“The track was awesome,” said Richards.” You could race anywhere you wanted. I had fun there racing with Frankie for the lead. This is a brand new piece we’re testing out tonight and trying to get this car shook down. It’s been fun.”

From the pole, Plessinger pulled to the front in the inverted start with Andy Fries and Booze next in line. Booze took second on the third lap but spun two laps later as Richards took over the runner up spot ahead of Jamie Lathroum and Tyler Hershey.

Plessinger was able to maneuver his racer and keep Richards at bay for several laps until he closed in and began his assault. Plessinger charged back into the lead when Richards took the lead on the backstretch of lap 12 but Richards kept the pressure on until again sliding to the inside of Plessinger again to take over for good on lap 16. The race was on until the end with the 1.28 second win over Plessinger with Lathroum knocking on the door for the runner up spot. Hershey had a solid run locked up in with his fourth place finish, his best since beginning last season as a rookie. Mike Lupfer came from 14th to end fifth. Taking the next finishes were J.T. Spence, Roy Deese Jr., Darryl Hills, Brian Bernheisel and Jimmy Bernheisel. Heats went to Jeremy Miller, Richards, Lathroum with Rusty Sites winning the consy.

Clearly a battle to the end was the late model sportsman feature as Glenn Elliott began from the outside pole with the six car inversion and leading Derick Quade on the start with Wayne Walls Jr. and Pete Weaver next in line.

Elliott had a comfortable lead on Quade until the first yellow on lap 13 when Weaver came into the picture, having passed Quade the previous lap. Suddenly, Michael Collins and Barrett were making it a foursome, running nose to tail and side by side in the turns. Sparks flew as Barrett tried the outside heading into the first turn as Weaver had little room saved as he also entered the turn. Barrett gathered it in and continued, taking the lead on lap 19 and making a one second triumph over Elliott and Collins.

“We got bogged down there for a long time in the middle of the race and I couldn’t catch a break,” Barrett said. “Everyone kept getting in front of me. When the caution came out, I knew the outside was going to be open. Weaver left me not quite enough room and I hit the fence. I thought I was in Days of Thunder.”

Tenth starter Ryan Walls got by W. Walls Jr. on the final lap to complete the top five. Heat winners were Collins, Weaver and Walls Jr. while Steve Axtell Jr. was the consy winner.
