This weekend’s Championship Night at the Santa Maria Speedway should be filled with excitement as eight local champions in seven divisions will be crowned at the conclusion of their last point races of the year.
The VP Racing Fuels Late Model Championship is up for grabs among four different drivers with Clay Daly of Watsonville leading the chase with a slim one-point advantage over San Luis Obispo’s Steve Drake. Both have battled all year long for the championship. Nick Bartels of El Segundo and Tony Toste of Arroyo Grande are still mathematically in the hunt as we go into this final Late Model event of the season.
The C&D Bonding Hobby Stock Championship can be wrapped up by the Condon Motorsports entry driven by Rich Denman. Denman, with five main event wins this season, only has to run one lap in a heat to clinch the 2013 C&D Bonding Hobby Stock Championship. If for some reason Denman is unable to compete this Saturday, then Taelor Janes of Arroyo Grande could take back the championship with a 5th place or better finish.
The Toste Mini-Stock Championship chase has Billie Smith of Santa Maria holding onto a one-point lead over Brooke Toste of Arroyo Grande. The beginning of the season had Pat Fausel of Santa Maria winning three in a row to lead the point race, but both Toste and Smith, along with Santa Maria’s Jon “Hot Rod” Blackford, started trading wins to close the gap and eventually overtook Fausel in the chase. Fausel and Blackford are still mathematically eligible for the championship, but both face an uphill battle with this weekend being their last chance. Both Smith and Toste have had peaks and valleys this season so momentum could favor Toste as she won her main event last weekend. But Smith holds the advantage even with a tie in points as he has had more feature wins this year to break any tie. But it’s a good bet that one or the other (or both) will be up near the front as the checkered flag waves.
The championships in the two classes of the Condon Motorsports Mini-Dwarfs are two different stories altogether. In the Senior MD division Cassidy Claborn has a 7-point lead over Kaden Cochrun going into the final race. Both could win this championship with the consistency they have been showing. In the Junior division, point leader Garrett Egan has only to take a green flag and complete one full lap in his heat to clinch the championship over Chloie Jones.
Both the American Stocks and the Okie Bowl Hardtops will crown champs also. In this episode of American Stocks, Junior vs. Senior, Sean Martin, Sr. goes into the last race with a 36-point lead over Sean Martin, Jr. Bob Oathout can wrap up a championship in the Okie Bowl chase.
And in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month anyone wearing pink this Saturday night will be entered into a drawing to win a free 2014 SMS Season Pass. So show your support!
