Woodward doesn’t skip a beat as Sprint Cars return to Ventura

OXNARD, CA (August 24) - Ventura Raceway got back to racing Saturday August 24 with another night of exciting short track racing as the racers returned to action after a three week break as the Ventura County Fair had its run. Once again fans and teams were treated to fast and furious racing on Ventura's red clay oval track.

Guy Woodward returned to VRA action and went on to take the 30 lap feature over hard charging Rick Hendrix, Tom Hendricks, Josh Lakatos and Bruce Douglass, who did everything they could to try to catch him. Woodward started outside front row and chased Hendrix for the first 20 laps. He moved to the front of the 14 car field on lap 21 and went on to take his second VRA Sprint Car win. Two heat races were run with wins being taken by Greg Taylor in heat one and Josh Lakatos in heat two. The night's racing ended with Guy Woodward increasing his point lead to 55 points over Tom Hendricks.

IMCA Modified returned to action with Dennis Eckert getting the win, leading all 20 laps. When the race was complete the results saw Eckert on top followed by Robbie Witwer, Robert Paquettte, Dave Phipps and Billy Wormsbecker. Two heat races were run with the wins going to Randy Thornell in heat one and Dennis Eckert in heat two. Witwer and Prows came into the night’s event tied in points. Witwer’s second place finish gave him a six point advantage over Prows, who finished 8th in the feature. The man who’s dominated IMCA racing thus far, Josh Vogt had a season worst 12th place finish after contact with Jack Parker on the final lap. Vogt is third in points, 13 back of Witwer.

The new VRA Hobby Stock Class continued to grow with ten cars in attendance. Tom Stephens Jr took his first ever VRA win in the 20 lap feature. He battled with David Heurung, Ernie Malone, James Brown and Mike Stanford for the win. Two heat races were run with wins going to David Heurung in heat one and Scott Dinger in heat two. After ten races in 2013 Scott Dinger holds a 200 point lead over Gary Curtis.

VRA Mod Lite action saw point leader Ricky Lewis take another win in the 20 lap main event over Dave Dotson, Jeffrey Fry, Kris Kornder and Kim Lewis. Dave Dotson took their one heat race. Ricky Lewis leads Dave Dotson by 35 points in the point race after seven races in 2013.

VRA Go Karts raced the big track and the action was fast and furious in their heat races and main event. In heat race action, Mike Evans took heat one and Justin Raper took heat two. In a wild and wooly main event that saw four different leaders in the 20 laps raced Mike Evans took the win. He raced with Matt Jones, Cody Nigh, Dylan Ito, and Steven Ito to get the win. Matt Jones now leads Kenny Byers Jr by 205 points.

The final group racing Saturday night was the VRA Sport Compacts. Andrew Greiman took his first win in 2013. Greiman was followed across the line by James Adler, Trevor Fitzgibbon, point leader Zack Peterson and Bruce Fink. Greiman also took their one heat race win. Peterson leads the series by 405 points over James Adler after eight races.

Ventura Raceway will be back in action next Saturday night August 31 with the next VRA Flat Track Motorcycle event of 2013.
