Pounds Returns to Victory Lane at Bakersfield Speedway with West Coast Late Model Shootoutby Stephanie Odom
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Hearts were heavy at Bakersfield Speedway on Saturday night with the passing of Bakersfield Speedway’s official Steve O’Neil after a tragic freak accident at the track. O’Neil was transported to the hospital where he passed. Fans had raised $2,882 for Steve’s family. The night ended with Bakersfield’s own “Dominator” Brad Pounds visiting Victory Lane in West Coast Late Model Shootout action. It was the series’ first appearance at the third of a mile track since October of 2011 with Pounds winning the most recent event.
Pounds lined up beside two-time and defending series champion Clay Daly for the thirty lap feature event. Daly got the early jump and led the first four laps before Pounds made the winning pass. J-bar issues made for an ill handling car for Daly, slipping back to fifth place. Championship contender Nick Bartels trailed Pounds across the line with Mike Johnson completing the podium. Johnson had been on the sideline due to surgery and was released to race on Thursday. Rob Sanders finished fourth.
Jason Papich, Tony Toste, Mike Kirby, Andy Obertello and Steve Drake completed the top ten.
