Kruseman on top at Ventura Raceway

OXNARD, CA - The ARP Battle at the Beach Series on Saturday July 20, proved to be another exciting night of open wheel racing at Ventura Raceway. The third of four Battle at the Beach VRA/USAC Midget races presented by ARP was run with 18 midgets in attendance. There were three heat races run Saturday night with wins going to Cory Kruseman in the Super Shox heat one, Ronnie Gardner in the Schroeder Racing Products heat two and Bobby Michnowicz in the BRM Motorsports heat three. The 30 lap Battle at the Beach main event was a fast, exciting race that saw Ronnie Gardner lead lap 1-8 before Cory Kruseman led laps 9-28. On lap 29 Ronnie Gardner passed Kruseman but Kruseman took the lead back on lap 30 to take the win in his first appearance at Ventura in 2013. Gardner's second place finish keeps him in the season point race lead at Ventura and also out front in the four race series within a series to become King of the Beach after the last Battle of the Beach race on September28th. Following Kruseman and Gardner to the line were Nic Faas, Jake Sawnson and Bobby Michnowicz.
VRA Hobby Stocks were in attendance with a season high twelve cars ready to take the green flag. Danny Quinn toke the first heat race and point leader Scott Dinger took the second heat race. The 20 lap feature saw Gary Curtis lead lap 1-11. Danny Quinn took over the lead on lap 12 and went on to take his second win of the season. Following him to the line were Scott Dinger, Mike Stanford, Danny Brown and James Brown. After eight races in 2013, Scott Dinger leads Gary Curtis by 215 points.
VRA Dwarf Cars raced in two classes on Saturday night. In Seniors, the 20 lap feature went to past champion George Calvo followed by season point leader Mike Neal, Brent Stevens, Bob Kaufman and Bill
Van Praag. Brent Stevens took their heat race. In the Pros, the 20 lap feature went to Brian Saxton followed by Johnny Conley, Thomas Velasquez, Cody Majors and Tim Conley. Their three heat races went to Brian Saxton in heat one, Eric Moore in heat two and Mike Neal in heat three.
Eight VRA Senior Sprints were on hand to run their portion of the night's racing. The heat race went to Ed Schwarz and their 20 lap main event went to Clif Warren for his eighth win in a row. In the main event Warren nearly lapped the field to take his record setting win. Warren led all but three laps to lead Ed Schwarz, Steve Brown, Dave Marini, and Chris Meredith to the finish line.
In VRA Junior Division racing wins went to J D Brown in Mini Dwarf Superchargers, Garrett Egan in Mini Dwarf Pistons and Nick Velasquez in Junior Midgets.
VRA Go Karts resumed their season with ten karts in the pits. Two heat races were run with the wins going to Matt Jones and Dylan Ito. Their 20 lap main event went to Justin Raper over Kenny Byers Jr., Dylan Ito, Matt Jones and Rob Marion. Matt Jones leads the point race by 145 points over Kenny Byers Jr., after seven races in the 2013 season.
Next week July 27, Ventura Raceway takes a weekend off as we prepare for the 2013 Ventura County Fair events scheduled for Wednesday July 31 and Thursday August 1.
