Pounds Dominates Night One of The Nationals at Santa Maria Speedway

by Stephanie Odom
SANTA Maria, CA (May 25) - The West Coast Late Model Shootout kicked off “The Nationals Presented by Coors Light” on Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Twenty-three cars were on hand for the $2,000 to win and $300 to start event with Bakersfield’s Brad Pounds dominating the first night of action.

Known as “The Dominator” to many, Pounds started the night off strong qualifying first within his group and winning his heat race. He started the feature event second alongside defending West Coast Late Model Shootout Champion Clay Daly.

Pounds got the jump when the green flag dropped for thirty laps of action. Daly settled in to second while the battle was heated for third between Mike Johnson and Tucson, Arizona’s RC Whitwell. Johnson took the position with current series’ points leader Nick Bartels getting by Whitwell for fourth. The only caution came out on lap two for Dennis Souza and Carla Laney.

Racing resumed with Mike Johnson challenging and overtaking Daly for second place and Bobby Hogge battling Whitwell for fifth. While Pounds pulled away from the field, Whitwell moved from the preferred bottom lane to the middle and top groove passing Bartels for fourth place. With five laps remaining Pounds methodically moved his way through lapped traffic and took the checkered flag with Johnson, Daly, Whitwell, Hogge, Bartels, Tommy Malcolm, Tony Toste, Steve Drake and Rob Sanders completing the top ten.

The West Coast Late Model Shootout will return to action tonight at Santa Maria Speedway for night two of “The Nationals Presented by Coors Light,” for a $3,000 to win and $300 to start feature event. For more information visit www.WestCoastLateModels.com or www.RaceSantaMariaSpeedway.com.

Pretty dry.  But with a butt load of cars and having to hit the track at 4 in the afternoon...what would you expect...  excellent racing all night long in most of the divisions.

Dry is ok....as long as it's smooth. The days of hammer down at SMS are over i guess. Good to see RC there.

I think a lot of that dryness on the opening night of a 2 day event is the unfortunate practice of having a practice night on the night before the 2 day race. betcha practice night was nice and hooked up...hate to see the "good" get burned off on a practice night...ugh

There is not hooked up with the last load of slime clay they put on the track its like racing on smooth concrete with soap and water on it it used to be good a couple years ago but that's gone now your best racing at that track now is on dry bring new good clay in and things would be different jmo

Seems to be the opinion of quite a few racers that I talk to.

I heard that there's a ton of laundry detergent in that track. Anyone know if there's any truth to that rumor?

There is no laundry detergent in that track. lol. The new fresh clay from 4 YEARS AGO, has been contaminated with rubber and dirt (which is a good thing). Race tracks were awesome last year. Best Sprint racing I saw anywhere. Same guy prepping track as last year. It just takes a bit to get it dialed in sometimes. I know it gets slimy beginning of year for some reason. Did it last year. Took about til end of June to go away. July, August, Sept were awesome racing. I am guessing silt or something comes up in spring, early summer? I really dont know. Tough surface to read. But its not laundry soap.

LOL racers are such whinners....  Brad looked pretty fast as well as Bobby H the following night.  Clay went from 16 to 7, must have passed someone....if it was hammer down they'd be complaining about rough and to much mud on the car.... Grin

I'll have to agree with the "mud".  I have never been a fan of dry slick tracks, but in the SS race Clayborn went from 8th to 3rd, Toby Randolph went from 9th to 4th, and Dutton went from 17th to 7th. I'd say there was some pretty good racin' goin' on for a dried up ole' soapy racetrack ............ just sayin'
