Daly sweeps Late Model action at Santa Maria Speedway

by Stephanie Odom
SANTA MARIA, CA (August 18) - Defending track champion Clay Daly swept this weekend’s Super Late Model event at Chris Kearns’ Santa Maria Speedway. The win has put Daly on top of the points chart as he looks to defend his track championship from last season. Fourteen cars were on hand for the second round of the local point’s season.

Qualifying fast time and winning his heat race, Daly started on the pole for the thirty lap feature event with Bakersfield’s Chad Reichenbach alongside. Daly took the lead when the green flag dropped with Reichenbach fighting back on the bottom. Coming out of turn two on lap two Reichenbach took over the lead as a yellow came out for Jason Selvidge of Buttonwillow who came to a stop along the backstretch wall. Daly was given the lead back and quickly pulled away when racing resumed.

El Segundo’s Nick Bartels passed Bakersfield’s “Sandman” Rob Sanders for third in turns one and two while Steve Drake moved past National’s Champion John Lowrey for sixth. Lowrey quickly advanced to fifth when Pismo Beach’s Tony Toste went high exiting turn two on lap seven. Action was brought to a stop on lap nine for Dino Napier as he spun in turns one and two.

Reichenbach chose the bottom line for the restart with Nick Bartels on the top. Bartels got the jump taking over second while Lowrey made a pass by Sanders. Lowrey lost ground however as he pushed up the track allowing Sanders and Toste by. Coming from a twelfth place starting position, Corona’s Tommy Malcolm began his charge forward diving under Lowrey for eighth place exiting turn four.

Reichenbach overtook the second place position on lap thirteen exiting turn four before a second caution was brought out for Napier ending his night. Reichenbach chose the top line for this restart and maintained the position on the restart. Exiting turn four Bartels slid under Reichenbach. The two made contact causing Reichenbach to check up, behind him drivers scrambled to avoid making contact. Steve Drake spun and came to a stop on the turn one berm ending his night. Lompoc’s “Ironman” Mike Johnson pulled into the pits with mechanical problems.

Fifteen laps remained when green flag racing resumed. Reichenbach and Bartels continued their battle for second while Daly pulled away from the field. Toste got into the mix and got under Reichenbach for third place. Reichenbach did a half spin in turns one and two dropping him to the tail end of the field. Malcolm continued his forward progress making a pass by Sanders for fifth. A caution was brought out for Jason Papich with eight laps to go after making contact with the wall. Malcolm got a jump on the restart passing Lowrey and gained ground on Toste for third. Running the top line, Malcolm made the pass exiting turn two with five laps to go.

Daly maintained a comfortable lead as he took the checkered flag with Bartels, Malcolm, Toste, Sanders, Lowrey, Bill Bartels and Reichenbach completed the top eight.

“We haven’t had a night like this since March,” stated Daly in victory lane. The Watsonville native found victory lane when the West Coast Shootout visited Kings Speedway on March 31st. Daly was running the team’s spare motor after hurting their primary motor in Bakersfield last weekend.

Super Late Models will return to the Santa Maria Speedway on Sunday, September 2nd for the Danny and Sandie Simkins Memorial race. For more information visit www.RaceSantaMariaSpeedway.com.
