The Hobby motor rules at Bakersfield and IMCA Northern Sport Mod "Claimer" rules are pretty much the same. The Hobby Stocks  are turning 6800 to 7100 rpm. My question is, how is 6500 rpm a fair range for the so called "BIG" motors. The 2bbl "claimer" WILL turn more than 6500. Hell,I know of a few American Stocks that will turn 6100 to 6300....... Slam away boys.....

I believe the rules state that if you do not run the Imca motor package that you have to run that 6500 chip. on the claimer rules you can run whatever you want.  So basically go legal with the motor and toss in your 7200 or so chip and youll be fine.

Three options:
1. Crate motor per IMCA- 6200 chip
2. Claim motor per IMCA - no chip rule
3. Grandfathered motor per Bako rules- 6500 chip and motor is claim able.

I don't believe so...what were you thinking was the other option?
We have two legal options from IMCA NSM rules (crate or claim) and the grandfathered motor we allowed from last years non sanction sport mods.

Old dirt racer, what is there not to understand?? 1. Grandfathered in higher compression 360" on a 4412 2 bbl and a 6500 chip-claimable
2. Home built 9:1 compression 4412 2 bbl, no chip-claimable 3. 602 GM Crate engine 9.1:1 engine 650 cfm 4 bbl 6200 chip-not claimable. Seems very simple when you read the rules...

You will not get 450 real hp with a 12:1 360" 4412  SBC and a 6500 chip   LMAO...That is absolutely nuts!!  I absolutely believe that a well built 9:1 engine on the 4412 2 bbl with no RPM limit will be the engine to beat. I have seen what 4412 14:1 engines, stud girdles, aftermarket angle milled heads with Ti parts, etc make with no RPM limit on a real dyno that isn't BS'd up...Keep on dreaming

A few years ago we ran a 9-1, 4412 carbed engine in our super stock when we were out of big engines.  Was nothing special with stock crank and rods and fuelly heads but well built and we never turned it ocer 6700. We regularly ran up front with it and even won a couple of times against unlimited  engines with 4 barrels.
Horsepower isn't necessarily the answer, especially with limited suspension.  A properly handling car is more important.  Build a decent 9-1 and go have some fun. That's what the sportmod class is supposed to be.

I think the 6500 chip grandfathered motor and the crate will run real close it might look odd cause I think the crate will be better off corner and the grandfathered or 9to1 motor will having longer legs down the straight but in the end they will raced pretty close.  I watched sport mods at boone and the crates would jump out comming off the corner then the 9to1 would catch up in middle and be even at end of straight.  A big deal with IMCA Sport Mod racing is chassis and driver.  You have a solid third link or top link when it drys out the heavy foot wont hook up the rear tires.  Its going to be pedal pedal pedal, which is driver.

So, are you saying the bigger motors will be easier to drive out of the corner, and still run down the crate.

Would you recommend this for a rookie?

No they just race different.  I would not build a high compression motor for one year.  You would be wasting your money.  Build a 9to1 or get a crate.  This class is alot like the IMCA Stock Cars in the fact you have limited horse power and need to keep the car free and keep your momemtum up.  If your off and on the throttle due to ill handling race car your going to be out to lunch no matter how big your motor is.  I think you will see drivers that are smooth in this class win more consistantly than others.
