DOT dirt tires

What do you look for in a stock car tire?  I know Cooper Cobras are popular with their open tread design, but they stopped making them in the size we run on mini stocks.

Firestone has a tire called Winterforce with a similar open tread, but it seems like a much harder compound.

Would you rather run a softer compound with closer tread blocks or sacrifice compound for a more open tread design?

Also, dou you want to stay away from flimsy sidewalls?  Goodyear makes a tire with good tread design, but the sidewalls seem to have a lot of flex.  Will this tend to roll over too much?
