I run a full perimeter 1/2" box tude around the top to hang everything on. But, just running something like box tube, or angle style, across 3 locations like (1)rear clip / (2)back of main hoop / and (3)dash is common also, with nothing running fore and aft except where you climb into the driver window. I prefer the complete box system.
But, it kinda sounds like your question is about lower body mounts. The material that I suggest for all lower body mounts is the lumber wrapping steel. You can get it for free at any lumber yard in thier junk heap. You dont' need alot and it can be rusty and crinkled. Just run some 4" long, 1/2" aluminum angle on the inside body panel for a mounting point. The other end can be just located right to the frame or nerf system. That steel is spring style, but easy to drill for mounting. It does not crack real easy and is free. WHen you build a set and you like it, build two more and put them in the truck.
On the rear fenders it works pretty good when you have a pair on each side, running at an angle to each other ... hard to describe here ... but they will be kinda close together on the fender end and be seperated much more on the chassis end. Like a V. I tend to mount in the lower 1/3 area. Not the bottom, not the middle. No idea why.
THe only thing I have seen work better than the free spring steel from the lumber yard is long, 1/2" diameter, really stiff springs , like for garden gate closures. The kind that are tight touching coils. They are a bit less prone to breaking than flat steel, but they can be stretched.
That's my $0.02
