I used to pull off if it got any over 230.

The 4 blade racing fans are supposed to pull more air than the 6 blade kind.  Make sure you have a good fan shroud, too.

230 if you have  good radiator cap and you dont start pushing water out. 4 blade will work fine if you have a good shroud. Any higher temp than that and soon your engine will be toast. Smiley

I ran most of a race at 242* with an aluminum head. A good rad cap is a must to keep the coolant from boiling, but you should have checked that before you go on the track anyway. At 14 lbs, water boils a around 260*. As long as the coolant doesn't boil(that's where the rad cap comes into play) you're good.

There is a particular fan/part number that is the "right" fan.  There are several different sizes, Cornett Race engines is very very specific about this. And I can tell ya, Pete runs one and his motor on the track never sees 210 or 215, ever. And he runs no shroud.  Try to get a hold of Andy Orbetello , he knows the number and works at a Chevy dealership.  The china ones "ARE NOT" the same. We were having an over heating prob in a friends mod, Rick Fringer donated one to the cause and we didn't over heat again.

gm# 405442 4 blade fan is the only way to go. it flat out pull a ton of air, has like 32 degrees of pitch and is 18" i think. it's always worked for me.

p.s. the cost of a good motor in any class is not worth running over 220-230 if your aware of it. check your cooling system thoughly. in the past few years cheap aluminum water pumps have caused problems. make sure the water pump actully has an impellar and that coolant flows the right direction.

It's all about how much water your have left in your radiator.  You can run them pretty hot.  I've got them up to 250 before.  If you ever see a car start dropping temp rapidly get off the track as you have lost water contact with the therm.  You have to change the oil any time you get it hot because the oil changes its molecular structure with extreme temps.

we have a 4 blade fan with a good shroud no holes in the nose and duct work to channel air with the smallest moroso water restrictor, at the nationals we covered half the radiator up to try and get some temp it ran 160 the whole race thinking about taking the radiator hose off next time to get some heat generated  Cheesy

I had an engine that wouldn't get up to temp even with a 195* thermostat in it. I drained 10 seconds of water from the radiator drain, and it would run 180* religiously. Go figure.

What is everyone's thoughts on the actual size of the fan?  I have been struggling with cooling problems all year.  The next step I am going to take is ditching the 6 blade flex fan for a 4 blade fan.  I have a real good shroud currently that I would like to keep using, but it will accept only a 15" fan.  I see that CV Products does have a 15" piece....  Would an 18" or 19" fan be way better off given the extra size?  If so, I would go with that and then come up with a new shroud.  But at the same time, a Stewart Components tech tip urges one to not run any bigger fan than neccessary...??

From what everyone tells me a 19 inch 4 blade is the best fan so i bought one, still havn't put it on but i will let you know what happens, I was running a 17 inch 6 blade and it ran on average 240 on the track

We run a 19" 4 blade GM fan and we run 2-3 rows of tape to get engine to 195-200* even at Bako in August....

Yep, on gas. At Antioch this year (cold night) we had 5 rows of duct tape to keep temp at 195-200*. Normally 2-4 rows will be about right...
