Kirby Wins the Battle, Johnson Wins the War at Santa Maria Speedway 
SANTA MARIA, Calif. (August 7) - The Super Late Models came to race their final local point race for the SMS Late Model Championship. Twenty-Five Late Models fought for 20 starting spots for the 30-lap main event. Clay Daly of Watsonville started out front and needed a win to have a chance at the championship, but his race ended early when he tangled with lapping traffic and was forced into the wall. After a check from the paramedics, Daly was able to walk away on his own power, but his day was done. That left Steve Drake the only other driver with a chance to pass Mike Johnson of Lompoc in the championship who now only needed to finish 9th or better to clinch the local Late Model championship. But Drake also had to pull off the track for mechanical problems. In the end it was Mike Kirby who took over the race lead and held it to the victory. Nick Bartels of El Segundo took second and Mike Johnson finished third, which was enough for him to clinch the 2010 SMS Late Model Championship.
