It would have to be a Grand American modified, and it would have to be on a 1/2 mile.

I always loved watching those run Mesa Marin.

Without a doubt, a 850 hp 410" 70% left side weight Supermodified at either the 1/2 mile in Irwindale or the mile in Phoenix!

My choice would be a Supermodified. Couple of tracks to burn rubber with a Super, Winchester, Toledo, and especially Oswego.

Ray Myers #83  (above pic is SM I believe)

1979 I was a 16 yr old kid, and got to drive my dad's "PRO STOCK" as they called them in Bakersfield- back when it was Asphalt 1/4 mile.

To me that was one of the biggest kicks I ever had.

Ran the same car at SMS twice that year...it just wasn't the same to me... I LOVE WATCHING dirt racing - but I liked driving pavement better.  (ALWAYS wanted to drive on a road course too)

I have always thought the old Saugus Speedway with it's off cambered corners would have been a kick in an old Southwest Tour car, or maybe the old Craigs Road Speedway (same type of Car) in Vegas.

A "MODIFIED" with the motor all layed down and them huge ol wide tires...now that could have been fun too, but I'd think 1/2 mile be best for that, over a 1/4 or 3/8's mile bullring.

You people are out of your minds if you want to race a Super at Irwindale or Phoenix! I have been in a 360 Modified at Madera and Mesa Marin and both places scared the you know what out of me. I'll take the dirt and the feeling of safety over that anyday.

Supers at Mesa where actually pretty stable before the suface went  away. I'dale is a blast because it has so many grooves the lower tier cars can stay somewhat aggresive and fast guys don't have to check up to get around them. PIR should ask for a financial statement from some super guys before going through tech. That place will find the weak spots in any car quickly...not a track for the underfunded. Trust me.

Me? I'd like to try a Crown car at Milwaukie or "swego...big history at those places with the Champers.

Oddly enough, I always thought a road race course would be a kick in the butt in something like a ASA or  S/W tour type car.  There isn't a bone in my body that wants to go two gazillion mph into a turn and hope all the welds hold in something as crazy as a super mod.  Fun to watch but usually don't race very well. Watched them at Mesa once, they were bad fast, but it was a train race.

Like your choice on the road race deal. And you are right, sadly the west coast supers have turned into a exhibition. Check out Youtube "Irwindale 1,2, and 3" to see how good it once was. Hopefully the SMRA franchise program will bring the cars back at Vegas. And if you ever get chance to see the east coast versions, ISMA and Oswego are really racey. Mucho more parity in the rules with the mandated BBC. I've seen guys stuck in the b-main Friday night and win Saturday.

I have stood in turn 1 at Oswego and turn 1 at Anderson for the Little 500. Just for the pure rush of it I would love to take a ISMA super into turn 1 at Oswego, but I would love to see how insane it is to be midpack at the start of the Little 500.

Hey Rodney, did I meet you at the ISMA show at Toledo a few years back? You weren't the guy who arrived late after towing all the way from California with a open trailer?

This car toured asphalt tracks and was used in exhibition sessions to try and break the track records which it did a lot.  The car ended up getting destroyed in one qualifying session.  Probably handled bad a$$ while it was around.

Hey! Yep that would be me. Kept trying to figure why you sounded familar. I was'nt planning on running that night. I was taking that thing some where to get some work done. Still had alot of fun that summer but the reality is the car we bought from Howie needed more attention than I could give it on the road so we bailed.  Hope you are doing ok.

Couple of videos for you guys,

This one is a heat race at Oswego without the wing. You need to fast forward to about the 4 minute mark before the race starts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcNISTembfc

On board at Sandusky, you get to see how the ISMA style wing works

How bout the late and very great Jim Shampine and his mid-engine 4-wheel drive Super that smoked the boys for a very short time before a rule change put the kabosh on that deal. Hard core that stuff was back then.

And as quick as his cars were, they where still nothing more than a better mouse trap built with the same materials as the the others. It's always been less expensive to throw ideas at the tubing bender than money at a engine. I think the powers that be over-reacted.
