The Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds had their second points race of the season at Santa Maria Speedway and the 25-lap Main Event was won by former Street Stock driver Kyle Heckman who has switched to Modifieds this year. Heckman held off Justin Crockett for most of the race until Crockett had to pull off for a tire problem. Heckman then had to contend with Joey Claborn of Santa Maria, but was able to stay in the lead for the victory. Claborn took second place with Doug Thorton finishing third. Last weeks winner, Danny Lauer, won his heat race, but was unable to start the Main when he lost an engine. The other Heat races were won by Heckman and Ryan Lauer.

And after 6 years of racing, and 12 heat race wins, Atascadero’s Charlie Scovell was able to snag his very first MMI Services Hobby Stock Main Event victory. It was the second Scovell family victory of the night as Charlie’s son, Morgan Scovell, won the kids bike race earlier in the evening. A hard charging Glen Sparks of Santa Maria was on Scovell’s bumper for most of the Hobby Stock 25-lap feature, but was unable to pass him. Sparks finished second with Santa Maria’s Michael Frazier taking third. Heat races were won by Scovell and Sparks. And in a rare qualifying run for the Hobby’s, Nipomo’s Tim Correia ran a 19.807 lap to take fast time in Hobby qualifying.

The Mini-Stock drivers took a night off in order to let the ladies compete in the Mini-Stock Powder Puff race. The ladies ran a 15-lap main event with no major problems or crashes. In the end it was April Papich who cam across the finish line first with Jennifer Johnson finishing second, followed by Kelsey Soloman in third. Papich also won her heat race earlier in the evening.

Next Week we will be running two nights of racing starting on Friday, April 30th with the Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds and a Freestyle MotoCross exhibition. Then on Saturday, May 1st we continue with more winged sprint action featuring the Golden State 410 Winged Sprints, Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds, Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks, and the return of the 410 Winged Sprint Wheelie Contest presented by Angelo’s ATV.
