Phillips Edges Hughes and Shyrock at Line for Pole Position

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA - Waiting until the final 100 feet, Terry Phillips, Springfield, Mo, passed Watts’ Jason Hughes at the finish line to win the Modified qualifier on the opening night of the Third Annual Fall Brawl at Outlaw Motor Speedway here Friday night.

Champions in four classes will be crowded tonight, with racing starting at 5 p.m.

Phillips, who was third behind Hughes and Kelly Shryock, Fertile, Iowa, on the final lap, got to second on the backstretch and pulled even with Hughes coming out of turn four.
From there, it was a sprint to the finish.

Through the first 10 laps, Hughes appeared to be running away with the race, galloping to a straight-away lead and lapping the field. Shryock was running second withGreg Skaggs, Bixby, third.

But a three-car accident in front of the grandstands stopped the race and allowed the field to catchup on the restart.

Tim Karrick, Bashore, Texas, got into Randy Simms, Oklahoma City, and Roger Sawyer, Broken Arrow, with his car tipping over on its side just off the track. He emerged from the accident uninjured, but was unable to finish the race. Simms, one of the pre-race favorites, also left the track.

On the restart, Hughes picked up where he left off, but was unable to pull away from Shryock. Phillips and Skaggs. The four raced just that way until the final two laps when Phillips starting making his move.

Also qualifying for tonight’s $5,000 feature were Jeremy Payne, Springfield, who just beat Skaggs for fourth and Johnny Bone, Pea Ridge, Ark., was sixth

Grand Nationals

Once Muskogee’s Cplton Dunblap got around Dale Richardson it was clear sailing to the qualifying win. He enjoyed almost a turn lead over Richardson, also from Muskogee.

Billy Kelley, Kansas, placed third with Haskell’s Jay Arnold fourth. Fifth was David Whittle, Muskogee while Randy Moses, Muskogee, rounding out the qualifying.

Richardson set the early pace before slowing midway through the 20-lap race because of apparent handling problems. He drove most of last week’s big Grand National Feature without power steering.

Dunlap was second in last week’s 50-lap run.

Pure Stock

The 2007 champion, Chouteau’s Russell McLain, led a list of qualifiers winning the feature. He had nearly a straight-away lead over this year’s track champion, Kyle Slader, Muskogee.
Running in third was Tahlequah’s Jason Ward, Tahlequah. He came back the back of the pack to qualify after being involved in a lap five accident that left debris on the track.

Also joining the qualifying field were Chouteau’s BrandiLevasseur, Muskogee’s Mike Bantaa, and Fayetteville, AR., Chris Montgomery.

McLain, driving a little Ford Mustang, took the lead from Bantaa on lap eight when Bantaa had a spinout in front of the grandstands. He went to the pit area in front of the grandstands to have a flat tire changed. He just made it back on the track before the race was restarted.

After McLain took the lead, the race was for second between Slader, Levasseur, and Ward. Slader finally got the advantage with two laps remaining.

360 Modified

Shannon Reheard led from start-to-finish to lead the six qualifiers for tonight’s $1,000 to win feature.

Reheard had a comfortable lead over 2009 track champion Patrick Goodnight, Braggs, and Jeran Frailey, Chouteau. Joining them in the feature will be Dale Richardson, Muskogee, Casey Lindell, Porter, and Carl Conley, Porter. The rest of the field will have to qualify for the feature tonight.

The race was cautioned twice for spinouts and red flagged twice for stalled cars in the turns.

Reheard was never threatened. On the four restarts he pulled was able to jump the start to easily retain his lead.
