Press Release by Jim Pluhar
Santa Maria, CA - June 6, 2009...

Twenty-five West Coast 360 Sprint Cars showed up to go racing Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Also on the agenda were East vs. West Super Streets, MMI Factory Stocks, and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks.

Danny Sheridan had a night off from the USAC/CRA 410 sprinters, who will be on the local 1/3-mile clay oval next Saturday night, and was glad he brought his 360 sprint out for a run. After a pill draw that put Sheridan on the pole for the 30-lap "A" main event, the Santa Maria driver led every lap on his way to the feature victory. Richard VanderWeerd, of Visalia, finished second, followed by Hanford's Davey Pombo, point leader Peter Murphy, of Clovis, and Davey's cousin Albert Pombo of Easton. Davey Pombo set fast time of 14.215 seconds and 8-lap heat races were won by Atascadero's Greg Porte, Hanford's Jared Little, Fresno's T.J. Smith, and Dennis Howell of Rancho Palos Verdes. Kevin Barnes, of Fresno, captured the 12-lap "B" main event.

For the first time in two years, Toby Randolph was able to best brother Tim in an East vs. West Super Street main event. Once Tim Randolph had gotten by Bakersfield's Lonnie Welch for second place, the Santa Maria siblings battled nose-to-tail for the remaining 18 laps of the 30-lap event before Toby secured the win. Welch held on for third, with Bakersfield's Ed Elliott fourth and Buellton's Bobby Meneley fifth. Tim Randolph set fast time of 17.220 seconds and won an 8-lap heat race and Nipomo's Kyle Heckman took the other heat.

Kevin Linson, of Arroyo Grande, won his second consecutive 20-lap Factory Stock feature event, holding off Atascadero's Charlie Scovell and Lompoc's Brandon Brickey, Sr. for the win. Filling in the top-five were Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, and point leader Dale Sylvester of Arroyo Grande. Eight-lap heat race wins fell to Nipomo's Tom Renner, Arroyo Grande's John Hanson and Chuck Barfoot of Pismo Beach.

The top-three in Mini Stock points finished 1-2-3 in the 20-lap feature event, with Atascadero's Tom Grzincic first, Santa Maria's Rob Gilbertson second and Nipomo's Jeremy Heroux third. Fourth and fifth were Robby Cervantes, of Arroyo Grande, and Kurt Larsen of Nipomo. Grzincic, Gilbertson and Heroux also won 8-lap heat races.

Next Saturday night's 5th Annual Ron Otto Memorial will bring USAC/CRA Non-Winged 410 Sprint Cars to the Speedway for the only time this season. They will be joined by NMRA TQ Midgets and California Lightning Sprints. Tickets will be priced at $18.00 for adults, $16.00 for seniors and military, and $5.00 for children six to twelve. Kids five and under are free. Gates for spectators will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
