This weekend I was LUCKY enough to witness ONE OF THE BEST PROMOTIONS I've EVER seen for racers!
A casual stop at the Santa Maria Mall on Saturday gave me and a lot of people an 'up close' view of the cars that race at SMS.
It was tasteful, well done, and showed off a LOT of great equipment.
An OK display.
Sunday, however, I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the amount of coverage about the show, including LARGE color photos, in the local newspaper who were 'covering' the Saturday show, while REALLY promoting the Sunday continuation..
I HAD to venture back just to see the results and they were absolutely AMAZING!!
The mall was filled with 'interested spectators', people who might normally think of the speedway as "That noisy place that we can HEAR on Saturday Night" were anxious to look at the cars, TALK to REAL drivers, and, (VERY IMPORTANTLY) let their KIDS see them.
The little ones got pictures, and even autographs!!! (Lots of drivers gained new fans), while the parents casually picked up the race schedules that were available everywhere!
ALL that displayed assumed the roll of AMBASSADORS for the track and did a SUPER JOB!!!
I witnessed a driver lifting a small boy into a race car and not only seating him behind the steering wheel, but showning him HOW that wheel could be 'popped off' to make driver access easier.
Next week, the established race fans will be going to SMS to enjoy the racing that they have for decades.
This event has TAPPED INTO a NEW group which will certainly be joining them!
With PROMOTION like this one, the BIGGEST problem at SMS just MIGHT be lack of enough seats!
