I remember a 67-68 camaro bodied car in around 78/79 running at Oildale (on the asphalt) with a Chevy 292 6 cylinder...seemed to me it was set WAY back and WAY left..and because it was a 6 cyl. it got to run a 4 bbl. carb.  That thing screamed...when they could keep it together

Fred Joehnk kicked everyones A@@ with a V6. in 90ish  Turned a 15.8XX with it.  That motor is still down at Bob Joencks. I can't believe something that small could push around a 3000lb pig that fast.

In doing some research, I found an online article about Fred racing bicycles now (At the age of 55), it looks like he's got a son racing them as well. (I believe it was Mountain Bikes)

His old V-6 screamed...and sounded cool too.  Just goes to show ya...get it hooked to the track and geared right(And BUILT by Joehnk's) and it'll FLY...

Fred ran the V6 (with a 4bbl) in 88 & 89 I think, he changed back to V8 in 90 & 91.  He set the track record for Latemodels with the V6 with a 15.5 lap.  A V8 late model never beat that until they changed to the new style late models.

BOYS-BOYS ----  Don't forget, numbers are numbers.  That V-6 with a four barrel made more hp than our 2 barrel V-8's, and it got a two hundred (i think) pound weight breake.  There's a reason it kicked everybodys butt.

if I remember right, the guy with the old 292 straight 6 said it was just over 300 CI, and Kirk is right, w/ the 4bbl and the lower weight...plus being able to MOVE the weight further LEFT and Back, there were several advantages...but apparently NOT enough so that EVERYBODY jumped on that bandwagon.

Capn, Tony Horst who pitted with me for a few years was also Freds pit chief said that car was close to 3200 at all times.  It was a tank according to him.

I have to agree with billy there, our PRE which was very old, but very similiar to fred's, had very little weight added to it.  We could never get more than 52% rear weight in our car, so unless that v6 weighed 200lb less than a V8, fred really was not taking advantage of the weight break.  Back then Fred figured something out, chassis wise, that no one else did, period.  That's why he kicked ass for three years.  V6 or V8 he was the man to beat.

Your rite  -- he did have some stuff figured out on the set-up, but even if he was unable to take advantage of the weight break, he still had better HP.

Tony said some of Freds success was his posi-traction rear end and relentless soaking of the tires lol.

Soaking Tires...that wasn't LEGAL was it?

I remember Bill Cavanaugh having problems selling a HOUSE because there was a spot where he had dumped his SOAKING agent in the back yard...

Nope - no rule against it, we all did it at one time or another untill everybody found out that when the solvent left the tires they were harder than when you started.??????  Bill dumped paint thiner in his back yard (thats what he was using at that time to soak tires) and YES it was a big hole, I know, I helped him dig it.

How did we get from Historical Bakersfield Photos to SMS LM drivers soaking their tires?  This tread is a complete thread jack.
