Title: Pinion Angle ?
Post by woodracin13 on 01/30/12 at 4:30pm

What is the best way to set Pinion in a Hobby w/ Floater?

I have heard you can do it while jacked up but what would you set it at and how much does it change when set on the ground??

I have also heard you have to do it when on the ground.

Just need to know.  I would like to have around 7 to 9 degrees.

What is best to set it at also??

Thanks for any info.

it's better to do it on the ground. like the very last thing you do. get it where you want then weld up the pads.

Wheels off and jackstands on axil tubes aught to work.  Push pinion past where you want it and bring it back with a bottle jack on pinion.  Tac it and check on ground before full weld.

I would definitely have the car sitting at ride height & race ready with fuel lead etc & wheels on the ground or wheel stands so you can get under the car to weld. That's plenty of angle. You can't believe how many cars i've seen in tech with zero or even up with the guy's wondering why they have no bite. :P

Biggest Problem I see is people measuring the angle of the pinion in relation to the floor... instead of pinion in relation to drive line angle...    amount of pinion angle depends on suspension ie; leaf spring wrap etc...  basically the more pinion angle the better bite, but to much angle and youll bind / break ujoints

Tranny angle has to be figured in also. Most professionally manufactured cars have that figured in also.

I've always put 10 down straight up with the floor. Never lost a U-joint and I've had motors high and low. Easy to remember and set and works.  Then you can worry about something else on the car.
