Title: SMS front straight away Post by fan_of_4p on 09/05/11 at 1:31am Well CK has a saying that goes like this... if your going to wreak/ wreak BIG and if your going to fight/ fight in front of the FANs Tonight that got every bit of there moneys worth with the "lil shoe" opening a can of whoop on Rayburn. That was the main event as the were plenty of fights on the undercard. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by 1 Fast hobby on 09/05/11 at 1:41am I seen it as rayburn opening a can on lil shoe!!! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by fan_of_4p on 09/05/11 at 1:51am Went to the fights and a car race broke out.... Well I had pretty good seat and would love to see some video of it. Everyone in the stands were on there feet for it |

Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by formercrewguy on 09/05/11 at 7:30am Who are these "shoes"? Everybody already knows Rayburn is an idiot. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by hogracer3d on 09/05/11 at 7:33am Kevin and Jimmy Irwin Kevin could be " Shoe, part Deux" Lol |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by FASTMIKE on 09/05/11 at 8:15am SOMEONE MUST HAVE VIDEO TO VERIFY RAYBURN GOT HIS ASS KICKED.......ANYBODY????? i thought he was some tough ass C.O. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by scottwhitley on 09/05/11 at 8:21am Awesome show altogether from the racing to the fighting! Some of those guys looked more into fighting than racing,as soon A's checkers flew they were throwing bombs it was great!!!! Not so great getting home at 5:30 and not being asleep at 8:00 but worth it! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by ministocker56 on 09/05/11 at 8:52am there was 2 fight's , gary all so got into a fight with the 29 , Last night was crazy , Then the 24 was after the 72 but his kid stopped him from going after the 72 |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by scottwhitley on 09/05/11 at 9:38am Can't get over what an awesome show it was and the perspective from the infield for SS race was so intense those cars were awesome!!! And Danny Roe moving from 21st to 11th in his 4th SS race against the baddest dudes in California and loading the 14t up with no damage was the icing on the cake! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by AJ55 on 09/05/11 at 11:47am There is no room for fighting on a race track. We wonder why our kids get into trouble duhhhhh they copy what we do. Good parents will not bring kids back to a place that lets them fight. We need all the fans we can get to keep all the tracks alive and well. Racing is for fun, bad calls by officals and the drivers take on other drivers. officals do there jobs and it will stay on the track and the racing will clean up. We can all fight but who can race clean and win that's the question. JMO |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Gasit on 09/05/11 at 11:53am I know alot of old timers who are proud of Chris's decision to let them fight it out. As long as they take their helmets off like the old days. (none of this "i'm scaird to get hit in the face" sissy stuff. As far as kids watching, It teaches them, for every action there is a reaction. Kids watch UFC all the time. this is a mild version. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by formercrewguy on 09/05/11 at 12:01pm It's not like the stands are full of Amish people....or the Mormon Tabernackle Choir..... I think the typical race fan can handle an old fashioned melee. ;D One of my fondest memories was Danny Simkins laying out Chuck Weber on the front stretch at Watsonville back in the day! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by scottwhitley on 09/05/11 at 12:19pm I've got two young boys and 55 got me thinkin and he has a good point but gait and crewguy also have good points I guess it's up to the individual promoter it would be nice to see new and more fans come out but at the end of the day it's mostly the same crowd and we like to watch races and fights don't bother most of us! Merced bans guys for the year for boxing and SMS is far better off than Merced so gasit wins this one! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by AJ55 on 09/05/11 at 12:47pm Only reason i bring this up is a track back east had a fight, guy got hurt sued track and etc. and now no more track till settelment is paid over 2 mill. awarded. This was because the promoter said it was good for drawing crowds on one and only one interview he said he was kidding but the corts did not agree. I do not want to see no race track closed. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by gl_rayburn98 on 09/05/11 at 12:50pm I was at Bakersfield two weeks ago and made sure I was respectful and didnt want to touch anyone the short time I raced there. The Irwins were the first people in my pit to ask if I needed help when I had motor problems. Fast forward to last night. Last lap I am in a transfer spot after starting dead last and not touching a sole. Little Irwin went for it all and drove through my car going into turn one. Thats not being a shoe by the way. There was plenty of track above me. Whatever its last lap racing. I get hooked coming to the checkered by Robert Read and smashed into the wall. So obviously my car is done and as I get out little Irwin comes up against me to jaw at me. That was it for me. So I jumped over his car and decided to get into a weak ass wrestling match. That was it and done with. I still like the guys I just had been smashed too often last night and was fed up. Later that night as I was loading my car, Chuck Cecil and his woman started throwing full bear cans at me and my pregnant girlfriend and then came at me with a shovel. All the while crying about me beating him two years ago. REALLY? Big Irwin drug him away because he obviously was way too drunk. Cecil, your a class act. Irwins, its was done with me ten minutes after I walked away. I have no hard feelings. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Cal SS All-Star Shootout on 09/05/11 at 1:04pm There was also another fight after the Factory/Enduro Main |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by MARSHALLFL on 09/05/11 at 1:39pm So let me get this straight, Chris this is what you want in your racing program? What’s going to happen next time when the cops get called and they stop the program? So you want people to have an arrest record? You really think it going to stay on the track and fights are not going to break out in the stands between family members. Where I grew up in the southeast this was a nightly occurrence at the races. This isn’t 1950 Mayberry were people forgive and forget and the cops just let you cool off. People today don’t let it end in a fist fight they now grab a knife or a gun. Just this year people have been stabbed and shot at football and baseball games right here in California. I love the racing here in California because of the culture and camaraderie. I really love Santa Maria speedway and I think Chris you are one of the best promoters in AMERICA. I have been to tracks all over the country and they are trying anything to save their programs. I can't see how promoting fighting can help a program |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by RACERVETTE88 on 09/05/11 at 1:57pm I have been going to SMS since i was 2 mths old and let me tell you that i have seen my share of fights at the track. And i can also tell you that many of the participants in those fights are still friends to this day. If they wan't to duke it out to get thier frustration out ,then let them. I don't think it is going to make anyone not come back. And us kids who grew up watching it, most of us have grown up to be very respectful adults so i don't think seeing them fight in the pits is going to affect the little ones that much. I thought it was a great race night and Chris did a great job. JMO |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by imracin68j on 09/05/11 at 2:57pm I never recall seeing fights. I actually thought the fight on the front shoot was a fitting tribute to the Simkins memorial. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by steph on 09/05/11 at 4:56pm Fight definitely brought the crowd to their feet. Didn't seem to bother the families that were around us... they actually enjoyed it. Kids see fights all the time, don't think one at the dirt track will make that much of an impact on their life. Was a good (and long) night of racing. Thanks CK. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by fromthegrandstands on 09/05/11 at 7:34pm Billy, You were pretty young when a lot of the fights w/ your dad, uncle (AND MOM) happened...I think you were in the stands a few times w/ your grandmother Sandi use to love to get in there and Stir stuff up, sometimes I think she got DANNY in more trouble - you'd have thought she was from BAKERSFIELD or something... I was glad I made it back from BAKO to catch part of the Simkins Memorial after a long weekend of R/C Car Racing - but I was too wiped out to stay for the final 3 mains. (Hated Leaving, but I haven't missed a Simkin's Memorial yet) |

i am the videographer at sms and videoed the entire fight scene....well several of them lol. after the incident on the track i saw rayburn thrashing around in his car and kept rolling because i knew something was going down. i will ask dave casteneda to post the video. he might not want to if he hasnt yet already though. it looked like a fair fight to me. rayburn got the jump on irwin because irwin wasnt quite out of the car yet lol. they went to the ground and when they came up irwin was whaling on rayburn. like rayburn said it was a heat of the moment thing. it's happened many times before. a couple of months ago there was a big fight between rob gilbertson and dave thompson. i talked to rob about it and he said things are cool between them. when i talked to dave about it he said he had had a terrible day before the races and he just LOST IT!!. pretty much the same thing we saw sunday night. the thing that saddens me though is that gary and robert have been friends for a long time. i missed that part of the fighting because i saw a driver in a blue suit running like hell towards turn two then out of the corner of my eye i saw someone holding robert back who had a really bewildered look on his face like he couldnt have believe he was being attacked. there was also another incident in the hot lane where there was another guy who was so pissed of they almost couldnt contain him. not sure what that was all about. then i heard a call on the radio about a tire iron. that guy got tayken care of pretty quick. all the drama aside i personally have to give kudos to all you bakersfield people and from other places...especially rich denman good to see you racing again for putting on one of the greatest nights of racing i have seen in a while. i really wanted papich to win the latemodel main but you just cant bobble when mike kirby is on your ass. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Joe_Odom11 on 09/06/11 at 9:46am i agree dario the part with robert is a sad thing cause i can honestly say robert is one of the nicest guys down there and was just racing hard for the final transfer spot. i also found it kind of supriseing that rayburn went after him after just fighting with irwin but i guess it was just one of them nights. but in my opinon all this made the hobby bmain the best race of the night |

My top two observations of that video: LOL @ the failed piledriver towards the end of the tussle on the front stretch. Announcer (was that CK?) giving away stuff while the skirmish is still at a boiling point. Why are you taking eyes off of the entertainment to look at a ticket? When it comes to the way we do our job at the track rather it be the girl selling the hot dogs or the guy making the calls over the radio. It just gets a bit irritating to see on here day after day people talk about it. We all take are jobs very seriously. (some more the others) I guess all I'm saying is that if some one doesn't like the way we do something put in a application with SMS HR.. as far as the guy who sucker punched me last year, I would like to think I got the better end of that deal, but I could be wrong lol |

Have you been to a little league baseball game lately...I have seen more parents fighting there than at races! Remember how NASCAR got on the map when Cale and Donnie and Bobby got into it on the last lap at Daytona...you can't buy that kind of advertising. Look at how many hits this has gotten already! I'm sure Chris is going to reap this type of exposure for a long time to come. Dave... when you get a chance, take a drive to Oildale and sit in turn 1. You will be amazed and amused all at the same time...LOL This is not something I condone mind you...but it sure is entertaining! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by gl_rayburn98 on 09/06/11 at 3:32pm I would like to apologize to those that I had offended that night by fighting. Kearns tells us almost every pit meeting to stop in the front straight if you want to fight. I was looking for Robert Read when I got out of my car. Irwin was the one that stopped and started jawing at me so thats why we scrapped. After watching the debacle I will make sure to take off my helmet first next time. That kid in the blue firesuit was in the 24 car and was also pissed at Irwin 72 in case anyone thought he was with me (he wasnt). He was also from bako. We dont come to the races wanting to fight. We dont come to get wrecked either. All of us spend a lot of time and money to come out and entertain. If it bothered peope that much to see a fight I am sure CK wouldnt be pushing it every week. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by dario on 09/06/11 at 4:18pm gary i hope you and robert can patch things up. you guys as well as myself have been friends for a long time. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Jason_V on 09/06/11 at 4:20pm I thought that the fight between Gary and Kevin was pure gold. Right on the front stretch right in front of the fans. That in my opinion is how it should be done. No going back to your pits and getting 4 of your buddies and then storming into somebody's pit. Any fight should be just between the drivers. Leave the crew guys in the pits. When Rueben and security is trying to break up a fight and 3 more guys are trying to jump in makes things a little rough. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by GATE KEEPER on 09/06/11 at 4:30pm . Jason, You beat me to it. I was going to say that exact same thing I have no problem letting the DRIVERS settle it. It's when crew members want to jump in and attack a driver when he is down. That's when I will step in. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by dario on 09/06/11 at 4:50pm and whos going tio get hurt with helmets and hans devices on anyway lol. but the guy with the crowbar or tire iron needs to find another hobby. i didnt video that part but i heard it on the radio. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by benstrans on 09/06/11 at 6:07pm Do it the way it's done in Mini Stocks. When the race is over, go an apologize for what you did. OR... Yell, holler, and get a little upset, THEN go watch the video at a post race BBQ and apologize to everyone because you found out you were wrong. You V-8 guys just NEVER learn!! |

Billy, thats why I was so pissed. After Irwin went all for it through my drivers door in turn 1 Robert got a run under me in turn 3. He took me all the way up into turn 4. If you look close you can see it knocked my rear out on me and I was trying to turn away from him coming to the checkered. We actually seperated for a split second. At that point he just turned right and mashed the gas. I was on the brakes for the last 100 feet. Robert would have had the transfer if he just turned off me . Checkered flag fever. Thats all it was. |

Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by kk03heritage on 09/07/11 at 7:45pm As I sit here and read the posts on this thread it seems the focus is on what the other person did and not what role did each party play in the madness. I am specifically referring to the incidents between Gary and Robert. Gary, you mentioned that you drove clean in the B-main and went from last to the last transfer spot. I wasn’t watching you so I’ll take your word for it. I was watching Robert, and I saw him get on the binders more than once to keep his nose clean even when it meant giving up a position. Then comes the last lap. I watched Robert come out of turn 2 underneath Gary and some clean, door-to-door, hard fought racing down the back stretch. I watched both cars enter turn three low and all of a sudden all hell breaks loose! It appeared Robert was holding his line when the contact began. I didn’t have the best vantage point so I may be incorrect. Then the video shows both cars high between 3 and 4, followed by both cars headed to the infield coming out of 4, and finally both cars headed to the wall on the front stretch. Hummm. What were the driver inputs during each of these stages? Both drivers could choose to step up and own their actions regardless of what the other driver did. In other words, take responsibility, apologize, and get back to good, clean racing. As for Gary coming after Robert while Robert was in his own pit area – unacceptable. Unfortunately it appears fighting is promoted these days. And had Robert went out of his pit area to engage in the fight that would be a different story. Robert stayed in his pit area with his mouth closed which use to be the protocol so that calmer heads could prevail. Gary came running into the pit area and popped Robert in the shoulders and then cocked his arm to throw a punch. That is when I stepped in and pushed Gary away. Gary persisted so I wrapped him up and started pulling him away. Meanwhile Sr. decides to play dog pile on the rabbit! Really!?! Robert use to crew for you guys didn’t he? Unfortunately Gary wouldn’t calm down until he had a couple hundred pounds laying on him. Good thing I lost weight! Gary, I am sorry on many levels that things ended up the way they did Sunday night. I support racing because I enjoy the racing and the people. I don’t know you that well and can only hope something else was brewing in the background for you that night. I encourage both you and Robert to work this out. Oh, and please don’t tell anyone about the intimate moment we shared in the dirt! :o PM me your number if you want to talk about any of this. My apologies, Ken Kehs Crew Chief, Hobby 29R PS In the video it looks like Robert crossed the line before Matt for the last transfer spot? If so were both Gary and Robert DQ’d for rough driving? |

Gary, You've always been an agressive driver. That's fine, it's part of the game, BUT, once you to tangled up in the heat race, you let your emotions take over. You pitted, for what appeared to be a tire change, then came back out, but instead of going to the back of the pack, puiled up next to the driver that YOU deemed responsible' for the altercation. Once the flag went Green, YOU continued to do your best to take out your frustrations on that one car. Racing was NO LONGER on your mind! JUST REVENGE! Your actions in the "B" main were NO different! The RAYBURN name has been synonymous with SMS since time began. Your FAMILY has competed AND contributed at nearly every level. I would NOT doubt that this MAY have caused to your NOT being punished for your actions more severely. What you did, in front of the BIGGEST crowd that SMS has had in years. really hurt your reputation as a clean driver. Crying all you want on THIS website won't change that! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Pearson_79 on 09/08/11 at 9:30am Hopefuly noboby shoots thier eye out! I dont understand why it takes entire pit crews for 2 guys to come to terms, however that may be. The only problem I see with 2 drivers meeting on the front stretch is that it does change the attitude of the crowd and I have witnessed some fighting in the stands as a result of what is happening on the track! That is where our wife and kids are at enjoying the festivities but unfortunately it puts them in danger because of our actions out on the track! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by formercrewguy on 09/08/11 at 9:44am I remember one time at SMS........after 2 drivers had an altercation on the track during the main, the wives got into it in the stands. One had their nose broken. Hahahahahaha.....not gonna mention names......old timers will remember. |

Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by fan_of_4p on 09/08/11 at 1:38pm Wow we just passed the 6,000. Veiw forr this thread CK gets what he asks for a good crowd, a good car count, lots of good racing, long lines in the food booth and a good fight in front of the fans. |

Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by gl_rayburn98 on 09/08/11 at 4:08pm Ken, your a good guy and I told robert that he was better having you in his pit to help him with his driving issues. My family has been helping for years and I have stuck up for him for YEARS. I am definately not the only one that has been mad at him. I never ever was going to punch him. I said that before i shoved him. I just couldnt believe he drove me into the wall like that. He never lifted even for a second. Look at the video. So yeah, I was frusterated. It didnt help earlier this year when he came and talked crap about me and then realized after watching the video that another car was the culperated for him getting wrecked. No apologies from him. Then that night when I needed to borrow a weight he made a comment I didnt appreciate when he didnt think ears were near him. So yes, again, there was a whole lot going on in mind that night. Benstran, I see what your saying but I didnt get out to fight originally. Irwin did and started jawing at me. I didnt know it was him till 10 minutes later. As far as the heat race, I was in a transfer spot after 23 (bako) and 2 (bako) tried kill eachother. 23 took off my decklid and I went out and shoved him. I didnt wreck him. And at least he came and shook my hand afterwords. I wont be pushed around on the track. I dont do it others like that. That was taught to me by guys like Snuffy Whitford and Dan Simkins and the Clayborns. You didnt mess with those guys. My purpose is to race. But if you want to ruin my night by crap driving thats not by accident then Im going to ruin your night. Easy as that. Ask any guy down there. If a kids car is having problems, Ill go give them a setup, a tire, whatever I can to help out. But thats not the Bako guys problem. There equipment is twice what we have and they still push through people. Not all of them , but a chosen few. And as far as Robert, hes a great guy but simply doesnt use his head when he is behind the wheel and I paid the price that night. If he pulled off me he wouldve been in that A main. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by gl_rayburn98 on 09/08/11 at 4:15pm P.S. OIA is Office for Internal Affairs. That was as funny as Cecil and his woman throwing beer cans at my pregnant girlfriend and telling her to suck his....*^&&*. Always some classy people out there. |

And there you go!!!!! I applaud both drivers. They stopped on the front stretch and went to settling it like the good ol days. I'm all for the jumping in of crew members, as long as it remains one on one between crews and drivers. weapons are for girl thingies at all times. And ones who are offended at the fight alone need to suck it up. Listen to the crowd. It'snot like this broke out at a tea party. Having said that, I would be against the parents of any age to teach their childings to solve issues through fighting, but "sometimes you have to fight when your a man." And you wouldn't have racing if it weren't for Rednecks!!!! |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by dario on 09/09/11 at 2:54pm the part that disturbed me the most is the guy in the blue firesuit that ran around billy,s pit and a kid ran behind him trying to stop him and the driver violently yanked him away twice and continued going after somebody. who was this driver? |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by woodracin13 on 09/09/11 at 4:16pm That is not his kid that is going after him. It is his nephew. He was upset with Irwin. It really doesn't matter who it was If they want to come on here and say than fine. It is part of racing. Hell kids see worse than that at school and on TV. Let it go already. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by Chad11 on 09/09/11 at 5:10pm That was my kid and the guy in the blue firesuit is my brother. I have no problem with anything that happened and I am sure the incident will not have any negative effect on my son, or any of my 4 other kids that witnessed the incident for that matter. My brother did not hurt my son at all. In fact my son was happy that he caught my brother and was giving him a hard time about it. I asked my son why he chased my brother and he replied "I like going in the pits and I didn't want to get kicked out." My son(s) has been asking about a mini dwarf for a couple years now. Later on in the night I asked him: "So after seeing all the fighting going on tonight, do you still want to race?" He said "uh huh" with big bright eyes and a huge smile. BTW...If my son gets wrecked by the same guy 3 times in as many races like my brother has, he better be pissed too. If anything, I think this will be an incident that will help him respect his fellow racers when he gets on the track. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by imracin68j on 09/09/11 at 9:24pm My dad got in fights at SMS more than anyone in it's history, from drunk fans to racers. As a kid I saw a bunch first hand and I remember being pretty darn scared when they were going on. The idea that young kids are ok with watching their dads or relatives in brawls is 100% false. Even if they act like it's ok. If you got your kids with you, get your shite together at least till they are out of the picture. Sorry, just my 2 cents. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by FASTMIKE on 09/10/11 at 10:51am agreed billy.....but when you cant avoid it you got to take care of business.....period. |

Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by imracin68j on 09/10/11 at 2:44pm Getting down and getting down when your kids are around are 2 different deals. I have a shite load more respect for someone that knows how to get down and keeps their composure when needed than someone who has no self control. This isn't a jab at anything I've seen on this video, just a blanket opinion. |
Title: Re: SMS front straight away Post by gl_rayburn98 on 09/11/11 at 9:00pm Actually I was ment to just quote you saying you never recall seeing fights then later saying you remember seeing a bunch of them. Kind of like Democrats who tend to say one thing and then another. Thats not a jab or anything just a blanket Opinion. |
