Title: mod body supports Post by Lee Motorsports #16 on 08/21/11 at 10:50pm for body supports how many of you guys use spring steel and is it the way to go or just alum. angle and flat bar ? Tha crap at homedepot doesnt seem to do the job very well and it looks like i should be using 2 supports on the right and one on the left, is that right. Thanks |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by Trinity Motorsports on 08/22/11 at 7:30am We run 3/16 aluminum angle behind the back side of the cage. The front and rear are 3/4 x 3/4 square tubing. Nothing but body breaks down the sides. Call if you want a better explanation. Trinity Motorsports 661-589-0700 |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by Bap33 on 08/22/11 at 10:06am I run a full perimeter 1/2" box tude around the top to hang everything on. But, just running something like box tube, or angle style, across 3 locations like (1)rear clip / (2)back of main hoop / and (3)dash is common also, with nothing running fore and aft except where you climb into the driver window. I prefer the complete box system. But, it kinda sounds like your question is about lower body mounts. The material that I suggest for all lower body mounts is the lumber wrapping steel. You can get it for free at any lumber yard in thier junk heap. You dont' need alot and it can be rusty and crinkled. Just run some 4" long, 1/2" aluminum angle on the inside body panel for a mounting point. The other end can be just located right to the frame or nerf system. That steel is spring style, but easy to drill for mounting. It does not crack real easy and is free. WHen you build a set and you like it, build two more and put them in the truck. On the rear fenders it works pretty good when you have a pair on each side, running at an angle to each other ... hard to describe here ... but they will be kinda close together on the fender end and be seperated much more on the chassis end. Like a V. I tend to mount in the lower 1/3 area. Not the bottom, not the middle. No idea why. THe only thing I have seen work better than the free spring steel from the lumber yard is long, 1/2" diameter, really stiff springs , like for garden gate closures. The kind that are tight touching coils. They are a bit less prone to breaking than flat steel, but they can be stretched. That's my $0.02 |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by sj_valley_dave on 08/22/11 at 3:14pm We use 1" angle aluminum that lays flat against the doors and quarters then use 1" flat spring steel back to the frame. It is 1/16" thick. PITA to drill holes in, but gives and rebounds back nicely. Used to use strap aluminum, it bend and stay bent...ugh never again.. |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by tmfab1 on 08/23/11 at 5:20pm spring steel for sure. spend the money on the punch its way better than buying drill bits and the steel doesnt get hot and brittle |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by Bap33 on 08/23/11 at 6:30pm the metal strap from the lumber yard is spring steel, but you can drill it, and it is free. The last part is my favorite part. lol |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by TALON75 on 08/23/11 at 10:19pm The spring steel works best when doubled up, I will wrap them with heat shrink tubing fo a real clean look . |
Title: Re: mod body supports Post by imracin68j on 08/24/11 at 12:24pm Jarrod Dominguez has this white plastic stuff that killer. It's thick and folds but will not bend. It's really cool stuff and cheap. It's used for some kind of application but I'm not sure what. |
