Title: SIMKINS MEMORIAL - SUNDAY SEP. 4 - SS BONUS DRIVE Post by OLD SCHOOL#6 on 08/04/11 at 8:11pm The Simkins Memorial is a yearly race to pay tribute to Dan & Sandie Simkins. Sandie had a passion for racing in general and she showed it through her dedication and efforts in the East/West Street Stock series. One of her biggest goals was to raise money for the SS class so the racers could receive decent pay-outs. A couple times a year she would direct her energy toward a "bonus" program for the drivers. The money, or bonuses came from "anybody" that wanted to pitch in and donate "any" amount of money or "any" kind of gift certificate to what ever they want. Here are a few of the types of things that people have donated to in the past. Qualifying Position Finishing Position Fast Time Slow Time Leader of the Most Laps Leader of Lap ?? 1st Car to get a Flat Tire Hard Charger Longest Tow Highest Finishing (North, South, East or West) Car Hard Luck Award Heat Race Winners 1st Car to Cause a Yellow 1st Car to get Lapped In Sandie's memory, Sara and I are organizing a "bonus" program this year. We will collect the donations and see that it is delivered to "whatever" the donor requests. Sara and I will see to it that the recipient of any bonus will know where it came from, unless the donor wishes to remain anonymous. So use your imagination or pick one from the list, and lets get this thing going. Bonus donations can be sent to: Kirk McCosh or Sara Souza at, 1147 Rice Ranch Rd. That was the Don Roberts Memorial that was also on Labor Day. When we were in Streets we ran that race a few years. A lot of fun. In 1998 they had probably 75 cars for it. I have the old program at home, I'll have to see how many cars were there. |

Chris is trying to get some sponsorship for the SS event, but nothing has come through yet. If no sponsorship comes through the SS will run 25 laps. If someone comes through with some sponsorship, the race will be 30 laps. Thats all the information I have at this point, hope it helps............... Kirk |

There has been a Special race on Memorial and Labor days for ever, and for a long time BOTH were run on Sundays @ SMS Back in the 70's I think one of the two was the Late Model OPEN COMP race - back when they could RUN 100 lappers, then they were shortened up to triple 33's. so guys could make the distance. I am so bummed - I have a rc event in Bakersfield this Labor Day weekend that runs Friday - Sunday, but I'm hoping to be in town in time for Sundays MAINS. WOW this season has gone by fast |
