Title: SBC Running Temperature question
Post by cross_racing on 07/07/11 at 8:15am

Run a Hobby at bako, How hot should i let my engine get before it would be necessary to pull off the track? also what is a good engine fan to use?? Thanks for any input

I used to pull off if it got any over 230.

The 4 blade racing fans are supposed to pull more air than the 6 blade kind.  Make sure you have a good fan shroud, too.

230 if you have  good radiator cap and you dont start pushing water out. 4 blade will work fine if you have a good shroud. Any higher temp than that and soon your engine will be toast. :)

I ran most of a race at 242* with an aluminum head. A good rad cap is a must to keep the coolant from boiling, but you should have checked that before you go on the track anyway. At 14 lbs, water boils a around 260*. As long as the coolant doesn't boil(that's where the rad cap comes into play) you're good.

There is a particular fan/part number that is the "right" fan.  There are several different sizes, Cornett Race engines is very very specific about this. And I can tell ya, Pete runs one and his motor on the track never sees 210 or 215, ever. And he runs no shroud.  Try to get a hold of Andy Orbetello , he knows the number and works at a Chevy dealership.  The china ones "ARE NOT" the same. We were having an over heating prob in a friends mod, Rick Fringer donated one to the cause and we didn't over heat again.

gm# 405442 4 blade fan is the only way to go. it flat out pull a ton of air, has like 32 degrees of pitch and is 18" i think. it's always worked for me.

p.s. the cost of a good motor in any class is not worth running over 220-230 if your aware of it. check your cooling system thoughly. in the past few years cheap aluminum water pumps have caused problems. make sure the water pump actully has an impellar and that coolant flows the right direction.

CV Products has a good 32 degree  US made copy, in 15,18 and 19 inch

We run Engine Ice coolant, brought the temps down like 10-15 deg

It's all about how much water your have left in your radiator.  You can run them pretty hot.  I've got them up to 250 before.  If you ever see a car start dropping temp rapidly get off the track as you have lost water contact with the therm.  You have to change the oil any time you get it hot because the oil changes its molecular structure with extreme temps.

we have a 4 blade fan with a good shroud no holes in the nose and duct work to channel air with the smallest moroso water restrictor, at the nationals we covered half the radiator up to try and get some temp it ran 160 the whole race thinking about taking the radiator hose off next time to get some heat generated  :D

I had an engine that wouldn't get up to temp even with a 195* thermostat in it. I drained 10 seconds of water from the radiator drain, and it would run 180* religiously. Go figure.

What is everyone's thoughts on the actual size of the fan?  I have been struggling with cooling problems all year.  The next step I am going to take is ditching the 6 blade flex fan for a 4 blade fan.  I have a real good shroud currently that I would like to keep using, but it will accept only a 15" fan.  I see that CV Products does have a 15" piece....  Would an 18" or 19" fan be way better off given the extra size?  If so, I would go with that and then come up with a new shroud.  But at the same time, a Stewart Components tech tip urges one to not run any bigger fan than neccessary...??

From what everyone tells me a 19 inch 4 blade is the best fan so i bought one, still havn't put it on but i will let you know what happens, I was running a 17 inch 6 blade and it ran on average 240 on the track

We run a 19" 4 blade GM fan and we run 2-3 rows of tape to get engine to 195-200* even at Bako in August....

On gas?

Yep, on gas. At Antioch this year (cold night) we had 5 rows of duct tape to keep temp at 195-200*. Normally 2-4 rows will be about right...

Dave, which Radiator do you guys use( Dbl.Pass? ) & do you Run a Cooling Additive?

We run a Howe double pass with a 32 lb cap...Sometimes we use Water Wetter...Right now we are on straight water...

How about pulleys? How much reduction?

Title: Re: SBC Running Temperature question
Post by sj_valley_dave on 08/02/11 at 4:21pm

we use a set of CV Products 15% reduction pulleys...With an Adams waterpump...

Just a note to add on overheating.  I've been running hot all year using a 6 blade fan I've had on there for a while.  Brady told me to change the fan.  I changed it and the temp went from 230 to 200.  By looking at the old fan you would never know the fins were flattening out from age.  It felt pretty rigid but I guess not rigid enough.

Billy did you switch to a four blade or just a new 6 blade?

Like a lot of you guys we've been fighting heating problems in our Super Stock for a couple of years.  Tried more fans, radiators  water pumps, restrictors than I thought were possible and think we finally found the combo that works.
Put a new Griffin single pass radiator with 1 1/4" tubes in with no restrictor, a good pump  Summit's house brand, CVProducts 4 blade 32 degree 18" fan that hogracer recommended.  Built a new shroud with fan buried in 3/4 deep.  Running 25% reduction pullies. Fan is about 3 3/4" from the radiator.
Tried a glycol based anti freeze recommended in a racing mag by CR Radiators and ran 250 with that.  This weekend we went to straight distilled water with a bottle of Hyper Lube( same stuff as Water Wetter).  With a real good 355 engine and temperatures in the low 90's at both tracks we ran this weekend barely hit 200 degrees with long greens in the mains.
Don't know if this will work for everyone but it sure seems to for us.  Quite a relief and leaves more time to work on other stuff. Hope this can help some of you.

we run duel pass radiator all star fan shroud and 4 balde 15in fan in the 44 american stock never runs over 200 and on long yellows it drops to 180
