Glaser captures $5,000 Late Model Nationals win at Santa Maria Speedway

by Stephanie Odom
SANTA MARIA, Calif. (May 29) – A sixteen hundred mile round trip was made worth it when Tangent, Oregon’s Trevor Glaser piloted his ride into Budweiser Victory Lane for $5,000 Sunday night at the Santa Maria Speedway for The Nationals featuring the West Coast Shootout Late Models.

“The track was great. You have to run scared or these guys will get you so I ran scared and didn’t slow down,” stated Glaser in victory lane before being showered in champagne. It was his first time seeing “The West Coast’s Best Short Track.” Originally scheduled to run in Oregon with the DIRTcar North West I-5 Late Model Series the decision was made to make the trip south when the two day event at Willamette Speedway was cancelled.

Brad Pounds and Mike Kirby set the pace for the forty lap feature event with duo battling back and forth for the lead until Kirby pulled ahead on the second circuit. Pounds continued to apply pressure allowing Glaser to close in on the leaders. Racing through lapped traffic on the eleventh lap Glaser made the pass for second with Nick Bartels also getting by Pounds for third place. Following the pass, Pounds made contact with Bartels bringing out the first caution of the night on lap twenty. Bartels spun and came to a stop on the front stretch nearly collecting Bobby Hogge IV and Chris Shannon.

Kirby still led the way for the double file restart with Glaser choosing the low line and Brad Pounds running beside him. Racing resumed with Chris Shannon overtaking Hogge for fourth place while Glaser began to chase down Kirby for the top spot. Glaser moved underneath Kirby in turn two and ran door to door down the backstretch and through turns three and four before making the pass in turn two on lap twenty six. By the thirtieth lap the Oregon driver had pulled away from the field with a straight away lead while Pounds pressured Kirby for second place.

Glaser went uncontested the final ten laps to score the West Coast Late Model Shootout Victory and $5,000. Pounds was able to get by Kirby for a second place finish with Shannon and Hogge completing the top five. Bend, Oregon’s Rob Mayea, Rob Sanders, Mike Johnson, Steve Drake and Clay Daly rounded out the top ten.

The series will return to action June 11th at the historical Calistoga Speedway.

Chris Kearns Presents and the West Coast Late Model Shootout would like to thank Hoosier Tires, Pro Power Racing Engines, DFT Transportation, RoadRunner Fabrication, Dart Machinery, Manley, CP/Carillo, Isky Racing Cams, Five Star Grafix and Matt Mussell Designs for their support for the 2011 season.

My two beer report,  so bear with me...

Glaser started outside second row,  on a track that was very tough to pass on,  dry slick and just about everyone running the bottom or a groove higher, (some of the guys were running middle )  Glaser settled into 3rd for the first part of the race,     then as they started working lap traffic at about lap 12  or 14.  By lap 20  or so he was able to get by Pounds in traffic,  and the yellow came out as 27  stopped on the front stretch.  He then went to work on  the 5 car of Kirby and worked under him about lap 25 or so i think... he worked traffic well and opened it up from there and was not challenged.
Mike Johnson from 16 to 8th...and Sanders from 14th to 7th both good runs on a very tough track...

Today was a darn fine day... I was in Banks with the other half of our team and we got a win up there, then get the call that Trev won in SM, and it was awesome. The last minute decision and long day on Friday paid off.

Monkey is off his back now... First "big" paying race he's taken home and it has been a long time coming. Congrats to everyone else who ran well too.
