Bender, Ensign, Drake and Kirkpatrick score victories at Santa Maria Speedway

This weekend four divisions took the track at the Santa Maria Speedway; Super Late Models, Papich Construction Modifieds, Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks and the California Lightning Sprints. The night opened with a moment of silence for IMCA Modified driver Tony Toste’s father, Danny, as he passed away during the week in a work incident.
Racing began with qualifying three out of the four divisions. Mike Johnson picked up fast time in his Fringer Motorsports #7 Late Model with a time of 16.093. San Diego’s Bobby Bender set on top in the California Lightning Sprints turning a lap time of 16.552. The Mini Stocks were given the chance to qualify and Nipomo’s Korben Ensign beat the rest of the competition with a 19.175 second lap.
The California Lightning Sprints made their first and last visit to the 1/3 mile of the season with ten cars on hand. Peter Benker and Spring Valley’s Jarrett Kramer each picked up a heat win. In the twenty – lap feature teammates Bobby Bender and A.J. Bender started on the front row and duked it out for the lead during the first five laps before A.J. pulled away. Jarrett Kramer challenged A.J. for the top spot and became successful; however he spun in turn two and would be sent to the back of the pack along with A.J on lap twelve. Kramer was able to break into the top three on lap fifteen and took the top spot on lap eighteen. Corey Ballard, Dan Hillberg, Robert Wilhelm and A.J. Bender filled in the top five.
After last weekend’s unfortunate event stripping Robby Cervantes second straight win away on the tech pad, Cervantes and the Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks were back in action with thirteen cars. Nipomo’s Korben Ensign and Arroyo Grande’s Robby Cervantes won their eight-lap heat races. In the main event, Santa Maria’s Pat Fausel and Hardy Ensign took the field to the green but it wouldn’t be long until Korben Ensign would take the lead on lap six. Korben’s brother, Dustin Ensign spun on lap seven running in the top five and was forced to visit the pits with a flat tire. Missing his cousin’s wedding, fifteen year-old rookie Austin Ruskauff was running in the sixth position in what would have been his highest career finish before spinning on lap eighteen. He would battle back to eighth however, picking up his first top-ten of his career. Cervantes was able to pick up a second place finish while Rob Gilbertson, Pat Fausel and Kurt Larsen rounded out the top five.
Thirteen late models took the track for the thirty lap feature with El Segundo’s Nick Bartels and San Luis Obispo’s Steve Drake setting the pace. Steve Drake took the lead from Nick Bartels on lap two and led the remainder of the race. Lompoc’s “Iron Man” Mike Johnson over took second place on lap three while the “Cali Kid” Clay Daly broke into the top three on lap eight. Unfortunate events took Bakersfield’s Jerry Stewart out of the race on lap eighteen with a broken shock. Nick Bartels and Logan Drake were able to pick up a top five finish. Nick Bartels and Steve Drake each picked up a heat race win.
Nipomo’s Kenny Kirkpatrick picked up his first victory of the season in the Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds in a dominating fashion. Kirkpatrick started in the seventh position and broke into the top three on lap five. Took over second place on lap seven and was leading the field the following lap. Kirkpatrick was able to stretch his lead to a straight away before Nipomo’s Danny Lauer and Santa Maria’s Daylan Coffee spun on lap ten. Arroyo Grande’s Justin Crockett and Daylan Coffee were both victims of the two flag rule and were forced to park their cars for the remainder of the race. Hard charging Josh Vogt continued his string of top-five finishes as he battled his way into second place. Vogt, who started twelfth, was able to make a last lap pass by point leader Doug Thornton to score his fourth straight top five finishes on the third-mile. Early race leader Mike Johnson struggled through out the night and pulled into the pits on lap twenty-one. Thornton, Bakersfield’s Ricky Childress and Salinas’ Austin Burke were able to score a top five finish. Childress also picked up a heat race win along with Johnson and Thornton.

The West Coast 360 Sprint Cars, Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds, MMI Hobby Stocks and Mini Stock Powder Puff Series will be in action on June 26th.
