Title: Track Prep????
Post by gl_rayburn98 on 05/02/10 at 2:24pm

So Breshears looked like he was going to quit after Ronnie Day decided to take the tractor and prep the track himself. I saw him walk off, yell at Day and then I didnt see him the rest of night. What is the end result in that? Is Breshears coming back?

I predict if you keep it up you will be racing barefoot in your backyard.

I was standing next to Breshears when all that went down. CK's hands were tied. The sprinter drivers were crying about the track Friday and Saturday. Its crap that they can push their will on everything but then again, what do you do? Do you tell BK and Day to shut up and go back to their pits or do you let the Roosters run the hen house?
I can understand Breshears being mad, it was just a hard weekend though on the track prep.

that really has me laughin my *ss off.  hope it works out well, tim and tom have put alot into this.  from the stands i thought dry friday and tacky saturday was great,. i hate the greasyness of the track when it's wet. sprint car drivers are supposed to whine, you should know that gary.

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by gl_rayburn98 on 05/02/10 at 2:47pm

God I know. I was embarrassed how much they cried. I lost so much respect for BK this weekend. If you saw him in the pits it was....
Did you notice the guy that wasnt crying was putting the wood to everyone? Tarlton is on a rail.

Gary, I own my own LM and Im hardly a field filler, check Tulare results from last night. If you want to talk field filler, your whole class is a field filler.lol (just messin hobby guys). My point is it really is none of your business. If it where Chris or Tim would call and ask you.

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by gl_rayburn98 on 05/02/10 at 4:10pm

Sorry Tim your right. Stupidness. The reason why I brought up the subject was that many of me and mine were talking about how crazy it was to see a racer take over and start working on the track. Again, CK was between a rock and a hard place. It was interesting enough to discuss thats all.

Keep it up flagdude. lol Its amazing they got the track to stay tacky on two nights of racing. I have never seen that happen before. Usually if you race friday you can bet its gonna be dry slick the second night. Good job guys, that new clay must be working.

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by gl_rayburn98 on 05/02/10 at 7:44pm

SLM47 tacky? what are you talking about? It was hard asphalt on Friday and they tried to bring it back. They were able to wet it again and get it to slick up and not be so abrasive.
Saturday the water just wouldnt dry up on the track so it was kind of sloppy wet until the main. Officials actually had a water pump on the burm to drain the water off the track because it wouldnt soak up.  The positive thing about it was that the tracks were opposite each night and it made setup a key component to winning. Vogt in modifieds on friday was unstoppable and then a back marker on Saturday.
Tarlton and Murphy were the only sprint guys that seemed to have it figured out both nights.

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by SawyerRacing98 on 05/02/10 at 8:21pm

the track was not tacky, it was snot.... the track we raced on in the main should have been in hot laps.... qualifying was 3 hours late.... there was not one positive thing about the surface we had to race on.  the track was so wet it was ripping the interiors out of the mods... not tacky...wet... it was horrible.

There IS a very positive thing to say about the track. EVERYBODY had the same track to race on both nights. It went from one extreme to another & made for some great racing. It showed who can really run on any given surface & who cannot. The winners loved the track & the losers hated it. That's the way it always goes. It's easier to blame the track prep than the car or the driver. I wouldn't change a thing on either night of racing with the exception that it could have gone a little quicker.

Robby I wasnt there I was just going off of what people where saying about track. Sounds like opening night for the LMs where the track was just snotty. Like menely said its like that for everyone though. flagdude, on  a serious note. They need to raise u up off the track for safety. Have u ever thought about that?

i was there saturday night only...i can't say anything about what i could not see...i don't know if robby is right about the amount of water but the track was greasy is the best way i can describe...i don't know why...but every one did run on the same track...the biggest question is what do i do with all the mud i came home with...lol...hope ck can find some more cause i think we brought home the top layer on the car...i have never seen so much except when we raced at chico after a main event...

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by SawyerRacing98 on 05/02/10 at 10:05pm

its not about everyone having to race on the same track! its about have a track race on at all... for you that were not on the track you have no idea... this will tell you how wet it was in our heats... same thing happened to me as did crockett in his heat...we were leading it, and you  hit the brakes to set the car and the tires locked up and slid on the "mud" and killed the engine... yeah it was that bad.

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by ministocker56 on 05/02/10 at 10:30pm

robby robby everyone has to run on the same track were it be sms or bako or hanford or , robby you & crockett were the only 2 that happined to , but i must say this you went from the back of the a-main to finish 5th nice run all on that same track , you both had backed it in to the corner a little to hard & when you did the rear tire's were up in the cusion that's what killed the motor's , but good job robby from last to 5th , tim & tom do 1 hell of a job , i bet both there wife's get mad at them staying so late or to get that track ready every week end , good job tim & tom

Chris and I have discussed raising the flagstand, Doug Fort and I have discussed it, Dave Swindell and I have discussed it, I am the one that does NOT want it raised. I have many reasons for this, but the ones that come to mind first and foremost are:

1) I will be too high (yes Chuane, I got the joke). The drivers have a tough time seeing me now, winged Sprints barely see me as it is. I have to crouch down to be seen, not good.

2) If you did raise the flagstand, that would leave me standing on a small platform with the flags with nowhere to run to. You know that if I am up on a platform, some pesky Sprint Car is going to want to be up there with me and I will have no place to go.

3) If I am on a raised platform, I will be unable to assist in re-aligning cars on a yellow. I do that quite a bit as anybody that goes to SMS can tell you.

4) At least now, I can run out the gate behind me towards the grandstands if a car does decide to "come visit" the flagstand.

Thanks for thinking of me Chuane (see, that covers both Duane and Chet), but I am perfectly happy with the Flagstand exactly where it is at.

Just curious if I got this right. Fridays track was dry and slick, some liked it , the winged dune buggys did not. Come Saturday the sprinters took matters into their own hands kinda and Ronnie Day jumped on the grader and worked on the track as opposed to the regular SMS crew? Is this close? Saturdays track was super moist and dust free, some did not like it (Mr. Sawyer for sure, that's his right) and some liked it a lot. Is this correct?

It seems like the GSC flexed some muscle or is that way off the mark? Ain't judgin' the deal just curious.

Was the crowd good? I would think so.

crowd was a typical GSC crowd, "whered all these d@mned people come from???!!!". lol   friday night was also a pretty good crowd conisdering this was the first time SMS raced on a friday night in 5 years. saturday night if you got there after 6 you had to park half a mile away

track was drier than bako friday night, saturday night was heavier than petaluma.

No,   I belive SMS  track crew worked late Friday night til about 2:30 am on Saturday morning re prepping the track.... Thats what the announcer told the crowd...

On Saturday night the track was a  wet slick early on and apparently  the sprint drivers still were not happy.
It just took a little longer to run the track in.

One of the sprint drivers jumped on the tractor and started fu$#%^ing  with the inside berm.... he didn't have much success in my opinion...

Title: Re: Track Prep????
Post by 81RACERS__DAD on 05/03/10 at 10:12am

I think your wrong about Chris on this one. I don't know what happened "behind the scenes" but it looked like the driver on the grader was just building up the berm on the south end. I got there about 5:30, so he my have been working it earlier too? Chris has an obligation to put on a "show" for the race fans. No show, no dough. I'm sure he has to walk a fine line between the racers and employees and you can't please everyone. But he has to do whatever it takes to put put on a show and if that ruffle feathers, so be it.  We as race fans have seen, SMS be good and bad and everything in between, and this includes when Doug was promoting. Some of his tracks on Sat night with the Woo, were terrible dry slick and dusty. Other times wicked fast. That's the nature of two night shows. This Sat. night is was greasy early, but came in and Tarlton was doing low 12's in traffic during the main. Smart guy is right. The Modified main was classic. Thorton came on about lap 20 and was on a rail on the top groove. Tim and Tom had one night to prep the track with new clay. The track was still very smooth with the exception of turn three early. Track prep is both science and luck. The luck part comes with outside elements. I think the time and efforts the team at SMS puts in is nothing but phenominal and should be commended.

dry slick tracks are harder on your engines than heavy tracks?  Those cars probably weighed 3300 when it was all over.  I'd take a dry track to that any day. When a tracks like that you don't even need a good car setup.

Looks like my car did some nights when i was racing, i could show you many pictures even from different tracks, i have even had body damage from the clay so heavy,
I had nights many years ago at sms in my mini stock and hobby stock where i couldn't see out the front and had to drive the rest of the race looking threw a pin hole,

I look at that Clay on that car and think.... Ah yeah, I remember SCRAPING MOD off my Dad's Car and off Danny's car back in the late 70's / Early 80's like that... and that's why we used a sprayer with (I think it was Diesel and Trans Fluid) on the bodies, and under the fenders...the wipe down the bodies so the Clay/Mud would just basically FALL OFF...

I think as long as the track is graded and they dont change how much water they put on the track too drastically then the track should be fine.
Breshears said that on friday he didnt get a chance to grade the track so that might be why is was so dry and packed. That night after we got off the track Breshears was on the track grading it.
I am no expert but I think that as long as the prep stays somewhat consistant then the track would be consistant.
By the way, dad talked with Tarlton yesterday and he loved the track both nights..lol

WD by the gallon from Harbor Freight.  Put into my own sprayer.  Baby oil or ATF works well too, just thicker.

I agree.
I like baby oil too by the way. Cheap and works good.

The track never really came in. At the end of the night it was just about ready for heat races. that being said it was a step in the right direction. Now they just need to fine tune it a little and the track will be hooked up again.

I think you guys are missing the point. I raced there both nights. First night the track was awesome. The only drivers that complained were the sprintcar guys. So after friday Tom did what he was asked to do and soaked it. Then saturday it was too wet for the sprintcar guys. So not only did we have to pack it in for them once, we had to do it a second time, still no big deal. But when only 4 out of the 20 sprints there helped us pack it got a little frustrating. Instead of telling the mod guys to suck it up, you need to realize that we went with the flow both nights.  It was the winged guys that were being the whiners. One last thing, you guys that think we were scraping 80's and 90's main event mud off our cars are all wrong. I used to scrape that mud too and saturday night's mud after the main was hot lap mud, big difference. Not whining just sharing my point of view.

1) Ronnie Day was not on the grader. He was on the Skip & Drag and all he did was screw up the berm

2) I really thought all of the drivers (Mods and Sprints) were fine. No one really complained to me about the track. I got comments and advise, but no whining. My main concern was the fans getting a show and not so much dead time

3) There has already been about 66 man hours put in the track since monday.

4) Tim & Tom will get it figured out. This new clay is very, very hard to figure out. We mixed some of the old clay in on Monday.

5) Track prep is without a doubt the toughest job at a race track. If a asphalt promoter tells me how hard he has got it, I am going to punch him in the mouth!!!

6) I am tired of everyone that can drive a tractor thinking they can prep a dirt track. THEY HAVE NO CLUE !!!

Thats all. Thanks.

I agree the guys will get it figured out.... they have proven that in the past.  the only thing I took from Saturday night is the track took time to bring it in,  thats to be expected when  a complete water and track prep operation took place in the early morning hours of the same day...

getting all the push trucks out there and burn up some gas helps and edjucate the crowd on what is going on.  I heard a little bit of that from the announcers on saturday night.

for most of us as fans it's no big deal.  It adds to the anticipation of seeing some great racing later in the evening and seeing which teams will get it figured out.

Some people start yelling and criticizing the track prep  with no appreciation of the work  and sacrafice that goes into the whole operation.....  to me this shows their ignorance  or maybe their arrogance...

your at the races with friends and a cold beer... what can be wrong with that?

CK,  dont worry! Sprintcar fans are used to sitting around waiting,  they are used to "dead time"  lol....

That's a great post, Chris.

Some of us fans would rather be watching wheel-packing take a little longer one week, or sitting through some dust the next week.
I know that for the last 2 Saturdays, I'd rather been sittin' at the track with friends drinking a few cold-ones watching some racing. But I have had to put in some 12hr (nights) at the job....

People need to remember Arizona lost 2 tracks over the last couple of years. "What if" 2 tracks in California closed? Say, SMS and Bako.....Then most people on this site would have to find something else to complain about. Appreciate what you have, and don't take it for granted. (Like I did!) The WORST night at the races, is still better than your best day at work....

Sparky,  I didnt know the wind was going to come up, it's kinda hard to see the weather report when your having to spend all your time trying to get the track ready after my day Job.  The water truck is empty when I use it to pack in the track.  A pickup truck has one set of tires across the back and a water truck has two. Dont worry the track will get better, the new clay will get older and wont glaze over as bad, we are trying to change things up in order to find what will work best for now,  wait tell we get an overcast day into a foggy night do you think it will go dry then?

We had a hole week of high temp days last week and lots of wind.

We could really use a doner big ass 4 door car or 1/2 ton pickup with a set of Hoosiers, we used to use the old 60's ford heavy haulier with street stock tires on it and it worked great tell someone blew it up,lol...

A pickup works good cause we can put the small water tank in the back to add wheight,

So if anyone out there would like to donate a car or truck that we could use out there for wheel packing that would be great,

I donated the white chevy 3/4 ton track truck you see out there and i would use it but it has 8 lug rims and 16" wheels so it would be hard to come up with a set of race tires for it?

Tom asked me to Thank everyone for the kind words of support over the last week.  It's been a very rough week for him and he is harder on himself then any of you could ever be if the track is not perfect or the way he wanted.
We know most of you all understand that track prep takes a lot of time and work and luck.  With the new clay on the track it will take a little time for Tom to figure it all out and if only the rain would stop as the water level under the track keeps changing.  One week he has it figured out and then more rain....ugh!
Thank you for your cotinued support.  It's not an easy task and very time consuming.  Seeing his daughter only to say good nite on weekdays and Sunday's while he tries to recover is very hard on our family and takes it's toll.  But as an ex-racing family we know the impact if there was nobody to prep the track and the impact it has on all of the fans and racing teams and their families.  So Tom continues to do his best and hopes will learn the new clay sooner rather then later.

Thank you,
Susan Breshears (Tom's wife)

After seeing that car in the picture I agree with Robby, please don't forget that we pay good money to put  on the show for the fans. If we wanted a mud bogg we would enter one. The fans pay 1/10th of what we spend to watch the race, just give us something to race on.

You are so right, different tracks keeps you wondering what the right setup should be, it also gives us different winners.

This last race i saw a lot of the fast guys making changes to there cars on the grid just before they came out on the track,

We know how to make it dry,
We know how to make it real wet,
We are trying to find a good hooked up track,
And our goal is to see a new track record broke this year,
But we still have a lot of work to do to find the right combo.

racecar35, I say you are full of s**t

1) Tommy Tarlton used a 10 compound last week on a dry slick track and his tire looked Awesome after the main. If a sprint used up a RC, than I think there setup was off. Stidhams tire looked pretty good to me.

Yes, I to would like to see it faster and it will get there, but our winner came from 8th and second place came from 6th, so the racing was pretty good.

It wasn't rough and like Pombo's car owner tells me every week. "Its the same for everyone"

Hey Sparky, Tom's at work I am home sick and wanted to check the message board and was actully very surprised that you are thinking Tom was pissed at the post.  The "they" you refer to is Tom.  Everyone has thier idea's about how to prep better or different and how Doug did it.  I just wanted to let everyone know that Tom trained for a year under Doug's right hand man (and best friend) Al as he was suffering from cancer and could no longer prep the track.  He was also given Dougs hand written notes directly by Nettie to study while training under Al which he did.  As said many times before the clay is different now then when Doug did it and in time Tom will have it fine tuned with this new clay.  It just takes time and we would apprecaite your understanding during this process.

Now as the wife of Tom, the track prep guy I have a few things to say that happens behind the sceens:

To be honest I am getting a little tired of some people coming on here complaining about how bad it all is when you should all be greateful you have a local track to go to. My husband puts aprox 32-36 hours a week between preping the track and Saturday night that we (his wife and daughter) would much perfer him to be home with us because we actully like him :).  The little money he makes pays for the hired help I need to pay to do things around the house that Tom would usually do so he really does not make anything for his work in the end.  We would love to walk away from the track (this includes Tom) but he has been unable to find someone to train.  One person did last year and after three weeks said it was way too much work and would no longer help.  We would love to go camping for the weekend but can't so you can have a place to watch the best dirt track racing on the West Coast.  Sunday Tom is so tired he sits in his easy boy chair and naps to get ready to start if all over again the next day.  Not what I would call quality time with the family.  Because the track can not pay a full year salary Tom must work a full time day job to cover the normal bills.  So if any of you are willing and qualified to share this job with Tom or take it over please talk directly with Tom and or Chris.  This is a serious offer Tom would love to walk away or at the very least be able to share this job with a qualified person so he could have one week off every 4 or 6 weeks just to get some rest, go camping and enjoy spending time with the daughter we waited 20 years to have.  I know many of you don't care about our family life but we do and if he walked away from the track you would care because what kind of track would you have then?

I am sorry I am very upset with some things I read on here and needed to vent.  Tom knows it has not been the best track the last few weeks and does try "different" things to see how it reacts and so far it has not made the difference he is looking for.  I know by my post you might think I am a mad wife who's husband is gone all the time.  But we are a racing family and I actully support my husband working at the track but it's alot more work then any of you will ever understand.

Thanks for letting me vent,
Susan Breshears

Susan, I know it's hard, but don't take it personally. I remember the days before the internet and message board. Back in those days people were still bitchin', but in thier own circles. Now it's out there for everyone to see. And unfortunately, some of it is mean spirited. You are going to get complaints no matter what the track is like. Tom can't please everyone. What will matter is if Tom tries to cater to too many people. he need to just focus on setting the track up to the best of his ability and let the clay come in. He should know from racing, you don't change a lot of stuff from week to week. You need to be patient, take good notes and work with what you have. Chris ( and we as racers) should be very thankful there are guys like Tom who will take the time and sacrifice his family for our enjoyment. Like any other job or recreation that is generally volunteered, the thank yous are far less than the gripes, and it should be the other way around. 10% of volunteers do 90% of the work that 90% get credit for. You have my sincere gratitude for your efforts.

Racer35 you said it the best "it will never be the same".  It is what it is in "2010" and Tom does his best with what he has to work with.

Bob you are also right.  Most of this we don't take to heart people are allowed to talk and we enjoy reading it, however as you said sometimes it's just flat out "mean spirted".  Tom is not looking for thank you's, every Saturday night of good racing is his thank you along with the smiles on the fans and racers faces as they leave the track.  He is just looking for a bit of understanding of what's involved and time to get this new clay figured out.

Thank you both,
Susan

Susan, from what I've heard one guy wins and the rest blame the track. So if you take it to the next level the winners like the track and that leaves you know who to blame the track.
I've done some work out there this winter and every time Tom is there before I get there and still there working when I am headed to my refrigerator.
A lot of these posts are going to get their cars together, going to buy a car or are spectators, those of us that are drivers or own cars on the track appreciate all the work T&T do.
I remember in the seventies when you had to wear goggles a handkerchief and keep your hand over your beer to keep the dust out. It wasn't a perfect world as the previous posts remember.
I am grateful to have a local track, dedicated people and good friends to be with on Saturday nights.

                                                                                                              Taelor and I THANK YOU

Susan I know that your husband and bother in law do alot for the track. But maybe it would be the best thing for both of them to walk away and take some time off. And see what happens. There is guys that know how to build a track and would do it full time. I know of two right off the top. So if it is taking time away from being togther hang it up. Thats why they got out of racing in the first place. So why keep coming back for more. Thank you for all your Help with the track T and T it just will never be the same.

James. Get over it. Let the fact go, that I had to fire you for being a bad official. Do you work at a track now? Does your boss know that you are on here trash talking another race track?

I agree Tom and Tim are doing a great job!  I helped with the track and new clay before the season started.  I do think that they should listen and take in consideration what the drivers say and their advice about the track.  example: stop packing the track with the water truck prior to the race and let the cars pack the track like in the past. That will prevent that track from being packed so tight that the moisture will not soak into the clay, and that will allow the cars to continue to peel back the track surface, to keep it tacky and from glazing over until the end of the night.  I am not tring to bash or piss anyone off thats just my opnion and I have been racing for 21 years and work with dirt on a daily basis.

Hi Doug,  I just got home and read your post.  You did a great job helping us getting the new clay on the track and parking lot. I have listen to you and others.  On Friday night you asked me to not pack the track and let the race cars do it. So on Saterday night of the two night show thats what I did. It worked great for you.    You did win the main. LOL    But lots of other people hated it.  It took two hours for the cars to pack it in.  But hay thanks for the advice.

I KNOW YOU GUYS PUT NEW CLAY DOWN, BUT IT IS TOO PURE, YOU CAN TAKE THE CLAY OFF YOUR CARS AT THE END OF THE NIGHT, FORM IT INTO A BOWL AND BAKE IN YOUR OVEN OVER NIGHT THEN EAT CEREAL OUT OF IT THE NEXT MOURNING, TIM AND TOM YOU GUYS ARE TRYING, EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT, BUT TRY GETTING SOME LOAMY MATERIAL, NOT SAND, AND MIX IT UP WITH THE NEW CLAY. BASICLY DIRTY UP THE CLAY. IT NEEDS SOMETHING IN IT TO PREVENT IT FROM BONDING SO TIGHT, YOUR NOT BUILDING A PAD FOR A SKYSCRAPER SO YOU DONT NEED THE COMPACTION LIKE A CONSTRUCTION JOB MIGHT REQUIRE IT TO BE. YOU MUST THINK LIKE A FARMER, LOOSE SOIL WILL BE BETTER THAN TIGHT SOIL, TRY PUTTING GYPSUM DOWN IF CHRIS WILL SPRING FOR IT, HELL HE CAN TALK A NUN OUT OF HER UNDERWEAR, SO HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT FOR FREE.. ALSO YOU WOULD NEVER SEE DOUG FORT DRIVE ON THAT RACE TRACK WITH A WATER TRUCK EMPTY OR FULL... JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. I AM ONLY SPEAKING FROM EXPIRENCE FROM FARMING AS YOUNG LADD AND DOING DIRT WORK FOR THE PAST 10-12 YRS.. AND IF YOU GUYS, TIM AND TOM, WANT HELP HIT ME UP AT THE RACES SATURDAY NIGHT AND I'LL ASSIST IN ANY WAY.

If you all wont the same track Doug Fort did then talk to CK about starting the show as late as he did. ( After dark )    Day racing is hard on the clay. He Also didn't have the high horse power cars that we run now. ho and the soft tires!

This is a good idea and we have thought about it,
Where do you get it?
How much is it?
Can we get it for Free?
How can you apply it to the track?
Well it work in a short Period of time, less then on week?
Applied anytime, Gypsoil provides a variety of benefits for your soil:

   * Flushes out unwanted Magnesium, Aluminum, and Sodium
   * Aids biological processes in building soil structure
   * Loosens soil and reduces compaction
   * Improves residue breakdown, which adds more nutrients to your soil
   * Enhances soil’s water infiltration and water-holding capacity
   * Allows for faster drainage, which can mean more days in the field
   * Improves the balance of nutrients in the soil
   * Helps soil release nutrients to the crop
   * Improves rooting of plants for better drought tolerance
   * Does not adjust soil pH
Tim.
