Post by SawyerRacing98 on 02/09/10 at 10:01pm

www.westernracer.com read it for yourself

I sure hope tulare keeps the mod races that are scheduled there, and with a decent payout.  Can we get some word on what mods will pay at chow, hanford, and or if tulare has them?

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems Mike has done alot of "I am going to do this and pay this" "The WSM is going ot be the next best thing since sliced bread" "I am going to be a preacher; Thanks for all the support"  "Actually, I am going to continue the WSM due to all of the support calls I have received" and now once again he is calling it quits.  I think you see where I am going w/this.  Mike has done alot for us modified racers, but all this back and forth in my mind has diminished his credibility.  I would think he just threw a monkey wrench into alot of guys 2010 schedules.  JMO

Cant say its not typical on the west coast. Look at Cali , Oregon, AZ. ALl turmoil all the time, and we wonder why no big sponsers come out west. No stability! As far as Mock goes, he was a positive advocate for the racer, raised the purse and the competition. He did say and do some dumb things, we all do. I wish him luck. As far as you guys bashing Robby for wanting the best pay for the racer. You guys are just dumb. Im glad your in a mod Robby that way you can at least pick and choose where you race. Ill be racing again and you can bet purse will determine where we race. Chet.

Guys Tulare and Kings are still behind the joint modified plan.  Mike decided to step away on his own and we knew nothin about it.  Purse will be fair like we have discussed.  Only thing changin is we need a new name...any ideas?  Lol

chow Tulare and kings Are all workin together as planned.

Robby let's rename the topic to somethin a lil more positive if we could.  The name may change, but the show goes on

first off to you that want to start talking shlt, i do not do this to make money, but i do like to know what a track is paying cause like i have said before, i like to support the tracks that pay a good purse, so excuse me for being a little curious of payout and what is happening between tracks.

91 crew and scott woodhouse, thank you for coming on here and letting us that were unable to attend the meeting saturday what was said.  1k to win is nice... i also talked to a reliable source today and he said chow is still paying 1200 to win, thank you kenny for that.  i heard tulare is still going to  be a good purse so thats all i wanted to know if the scheduled races and everything there was still on...thanks

threewideracin... the topic is about payout and whats happening between tracks, not about me, so please keep your stupid comments to yourself.

NEW NAME SHOULD BE "CMTS" California Modified Touring Series"

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by Troy Morris Jr. on 02/10/10 at 4:33pm

Before anyone badmouths Mike we should consider what he has done for Modified Racing on the West Coast.  Because he paid 1k to win others are now paying 500 - 600 to win.  Promoters finally realized that money makes the field grow. The purse would have never gone up without someone making it happen and for that we have to thank Mike.  It is hard to commit to something like this, he has a real job and a family.  I cannot imagine the time that he has put into this.  I wouldnt be surprised if it was taken from him to eliminate the middle man.  Things come up and situations change... shoot just this weekend I was going to Arkansas to pick up a car and now I cannot go until the end of the month.  Mike has said stuff when he should have remained quiet... but who hasn't.  Rather than kick someone when they are "down" why dont you get "down" on your knees and pray for him.  Things are tuff right now for a lot of people, Mike works for the State of CA... and you know the state has financial issues right now that have effected his job stability.

Mike I appreciate you and wish things would have worked like you dreamed.  Not all dreams come true but thanks for sharing your dreams with us!!

God Bless
Troy Morris Jr.

I will support whatever you promote!!

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by WESTCOASTDIRT on 02/10/10 at 4:38pm

Man you guy's are way off the mark, but that is why the west coast is always a step behind. People spend their money and "FREE" time to put something together and get zip out of it other than the pride of trying to make something happen for the racers. But as soon as it seems to go off track, then that person is a no good SOB.

This is what I was told!!!!!!!!Rumor has it that the total purse for 20 or less cars will be 3,000 and 40 for car entry and every car after 20 will be 120.00 that goes into purse. So kind of hard to pay 1,000 and 100 with only 3,000 to work with. But we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I could say something about how the SLM races went to S***, but that would be throwing rocks at glass houses.

Good luck to Tulare!

Little Darlins

I want to make something clear:  I am in no way talking bad about anyone, I just want people to know we r racing still.

The rumors of a floating purse are not completely true.  There is a basis based on cars, but it is still the best purse in modifieds.

Once Faria gets back from Pomona (good luck Steve!) the three tracks will get together and get a press release together. But we are moving forward.

Playday Feb 20 and 27 at kings.  $20 per person in pits no car fee.  Free grandstands.  10-dusk

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by SawyerRacing98 on 02/10/10 at 5:42pm

okay i dont like troy but he is so right!!!! there is no reason to bad mouth anyone at all... mike tried his best to help us racers, yeah he canceled the big money show 2 years in a row, but oh well... its hard for people sometimes just like troy said, rather he was given the boot or chose to leave... we need to appreciate the hard work him and little darlins child care put into this division.

On a side note... dont do a floating purse based on car count... i cant speak for anyone but myself, but when you say the purse is based on 20 cars bla bla bla... i myself will not support that at hanford untill i see the car count after a few races... tulare and chow i will simply cause i know they will get that no problem... but thats just me...

Not that kind of float. Trust me you guys will have good purse structure and be treated fair and consistent.

Let's go racin

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by Troy Morris Jr. on 02/10/10 at 8:20pm

I cannot support a division that is ill gotten game.  Mike had a good thing going....  Greed will be the demise of the once great WSM!

If they are going to pay $3k purse and $100 to start....
Lets assume..

1) 1st Place $1000 (Leaves $2000)

2)10-20th place $100 each = $1100 ( Leaves $900)

3) 2-9th place $112.50 each = $900 (leaves 0)

Wow... lets race for $112.50 for a second place finish!!

Talk about a top heavy purse....
This is trash!!

Here is what we had with the WSM

1-1200
2-600
3-450
4-425
5-350
6-300
7-250
8-200
9-150
10-125
11 thru 22-100
Total Purse $5250
+ $35 show up money to all non qualifiers.
Average car count of 35 cars = an additional $455
Grand Total of $5718.00.... almost double the proposed purse!

I am tired of greedy promoters.  Go sell some advertisement... quit taking if from the racer.  If you cannot afford to pay the purse you can afford to run a track!!

Just call it the Western Series Modifieds, then you don't have to change anything on your schedules as it will still be the WSM !

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by mighty16x on 02/10/10 at 10:22pm

i believe i heard Mr. Woodhouse say the total purse was around $5700. thats alot to guarantee without a minimum car count. i wouldnt blame them if they had to make a minimum.
but from what ive heard, the class and structure is very popular among the mod drivers, and should not have a problem filling the field. i would worry about the surrounding IMCA tracks.
if the 3 tracks can work together and keep it going in the same direction it has been, it should continue to build.

Greedy promoters?  I thought you had a better understanding. Do the math.   How many cars does it take to not lose money with a 5400 purse?  Tulare and Chow both lost money on mods but still want to make a purse that is better than others.

Advertisement!  Shut up!  Advertisers want to see a ROI (look it up). And with so many companies hurting.....easier said than done.

who are you? and i dont care how much you lose, racers dont make money either... i am sorry such a simple question leads to so much controversy... my question was not, "hey how much money are promoters and racers going to lose this year" lol...

The question sould be...."How many FANS does it take to not lose money on a $5400 purse?" If promoters did their job getting fans in the stands, companies would get a better ROI, and racers wouldn't have to pay their own purse. Remember, racers are the show that fans PAY to see.

success only comes from harmonious human relationships...think about it.

therfore the promoter has alot of customers to satisfy:

             1. the racer

             2. the fan

             3. the sponsor

with the proper balance they might make a living.

I really dont like to get involved with this message board crap but it does get very irritating sometimes...For one, I dont know anyone on here and I am already being referred to as a "greedy promoter".  Wow...Then Im told to go sell some advertising??? wow wow!!! Giant Chevrolet, Tachi Palace, and Budweiser seems to be a good start...But obviously this racetrack has not had any money invested into it in 10-15 years...We are...Building new bathroom, new beer booth, and demolished concession and building a new one of those...AND we have not even got to the pits yet...Most of you do not know Don or myself, but I would have to say we are far from greedy...Our weekly purse in Micro-Sprints is the most on the West Coast..We know we need racecars to have a racetrack....We know it is our job to promote the place...BUT at the sametime we need to be careful where we throw money...I dont care if we are racing go karts or NASCAR its all a numbers game...Small Numbers vs. BIG  I will let Scott deal with this messageboard because I need to be out selling advertisment...But geez guys.....give us a chance....If the money is there...we can always raise the purse...

you are correct chad. the last time i remember the fans being a part of the purse was Merced in 1987. my dad ran his super mod there and i can remember them saying at the drivers meeting that it was a good crowd, so the purse would be good. back then, they raced for a % of the ticket sales.
im not sayin that all the promoters are doing their best, but in their defence, its hard to get people out of their houses any more to actually watch any kind of event. its even effecting nascar, look at the grandstands at most of the races, whole sections empty.
people can see what ever they want on tv, without getting cold or dirty or having to smell the fumes and dust.
oildale is one of the last tracks with a built in clientel of families that have been going there for generations. or maybe tv hasnt hit oildale yet.... ;D

I put a lot of time into this and wouldn't do it if I thought it wasn't being done in a matter fair to the racers.

I look forward to seeing you guys at the races.

Why in the heck dont you guys cease and desist for a while. Do you enjoy beating up people. Give whoever is in charge a chance to get it done before you write them off as greedy or what ever. So Mike is done with the WSM..Ok, deal with it and move on. If you spend more time getting your cars ready and less time carping on this board, you might have them ready when the announcement comes down from Scott and Bubby and Steve  to start your engines.
Every body has an opinion, I know, but why not wait till  you have all the facts before you jump to conclusions.  Then be constructive, not destructive. No one will really know everything until the green flag drops anyway, where ever that takes place.  However hammering the Race promoters and Directors will not do any one any good.  So comeon guys, give them a chance!!!!

Factual and on record:When a business model produces the highest car count numbers in the state for 2yrs running and that including getting run over by other tracks when you have only 5 to 6 events a year. I believe that business model is factually sound no matter what flows from the mouth, when someone produces a greater business model that brings 35 + teams on average and with other tracks running on top of those dates, then ring that bell for moving to the next level.

All I can see at this point with 20yrs in the sport, is that we are going backwards 15yrs in time. JMO

I was just check your pulse on what has taken place with the late models! being your so happy with what goes around come around with Mock. I would think you would be really mad how the late model fell off the Earth even though the Teams did their job and supported the tracks faithfully and had a field of cars.

For the record the 3 tracks/promoters are standing strong behind our committment to the modified schedule we have put together.

Feb 20 is the first playday.  Hope to see you guys

Wow, what a grown up adult conversation this turned out to be...

How about us racers work on getting our cars ready, race track operators work on getting the tracks ready. (yes I said race track operators not "promoters")

Then when it comes time to race , us racers will decide where and when we race based on the information that is provided by the track operators.....how that info is passed on is up to them...ie: internet, twitter, another site, myspace, yourspace or maybe a PHONE CALL or two....

Now since I vented a little, Sunday is Valentines Day so be nice to you sweety maybe buy her or him some flowers or something....

Eric you ask how do i feel?

i believe the mistakes that were made that caused this digression in the late model class will be corrected in 12-24 months from now.

i believe that the cooperation of all parties involved(promoters/racers/sponsors) will bring LM's as you saw them in the not so distant past back with more success than that time. that said my benchmark would be average car count during CK's full reign the second year of the WAS.(those #'s are available i am sure...lol)

my mantra here from my very first post here at LMR has been to have solidarity among the drivers and accountability of the promoter by the teams......

one person has demonstrated to me through execution that it can be done and by all appearances today 2-12-10 it is and will happen again.

now this mod thing could be the same thing but not without cooperation and accountability.

my previous comments on this subject come with no apologies....they come with a mirror of reflection of years gone by.....the difference then is that all those gettin bashed came through with all they said they would do and accomplish only to see it sold for a dollar.....

oh yeah and for the record AGAIN.....the purchase was not offered to me or the LM conversation of the RECENT past would not be happening with regards to dirt.....jmo

hope this makes my feeling clear.

10-4, that is exactly what I thought you would say. But you also have to remember that the late model teams have to survive yet again because people running things decided to change yet again(hopefully for the good).

Looking forward I have a couple of irons in the fire as well, because I am tired of people changing things every 3 yrs.

Mike, I hope you are correct. With the economy the way it is there has never been a more crucial time for the promoters and racers to work together for a good show and fair pay. Both sides giving a little and keep the show going is what its going to take. JMO Chet

Me as well, but you can only go to the well (teams)so many times and then the well goes dry.
I think someone needs to start a race team association that way the teams as a unit set the tone of their future, not a track, not a promoter and not a series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that was tryed in the 70s I belive and to try and get a group of racers to aggree on anything is almost inpossable. But I do arggree that it would be nice to get everyone on the same page,be it racers, owners, promoters.Look at the discussions on just what type of tire to run.If the tracks got togather and set the same rules  it would you rule them or run at another track.I would like to see seversal track(differant promoters) from a association ( like nascar) and  work 100% togahter we just might be working that way

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by Bap33 on 02/13/10 at 4:07pm

The following is just my own ideas and thoughts.  I have no authority to make anything happen.

After reading the last few posts I figured this ..... "hmmm ,so if the mod drivers voted in IMCA by a majority vote, then all parties would agree to sanction this traveling series through IMCA?  Lets do it."
1) Put up the dates and tracks and a scale as to what pay-offs will be vs car counts.
2) The vote is simple - (A) Run as an IMCA Series between the two or three tracks (or more, since Ocean and SMS and Bakers and a few more are IMCA), or (B) Run under non-IMCA rules at the two or three tracks with rules that only apply at the two or three tracks for a year or two.

It should be pretty fair .. the drivers will know when and where the races will be.  The tracks will se that other tracks are not double booking mods on series nights.  The fact that a guy can see those things before he puts his hat in the ring is good

To vote: a driver has to register for the series ($50 or so) and/or pre-enter for 50% or more of the planned events on the series route.  Once the series is voted on and a rule set picked by popular vote, no entry can be returned - meaning that drivers put up the entry to vote and they can either race as the vote outcome descides or they can give up your entry/registration.

Have all involved track promoters/sponsors sign off on this thing too, so they cant back out if the vote does not match their desires.  If they need to see X number of registration cards to agree to race the series, then advertise that amount so all parties understand the minimum number of registrations needed to even run the series - remove the guess work.  If that number of registrations is not met, the series returns all money.  But, if that number is met, the vote stands.  Interested tracks should sign a no competition agreement to keep pouty promoters from running thier chosen rules against the winning vote.  All parties need to agree to live by the vote.

Let the votes be made on the registration cards for the series to remove all doubt and allow for the roster to be filled and known all at once, by all parties.
The registration card would look something like this:
Modified Series Race Series
$XXX fee for 12 race series (best of 10)
50% of $XXX paid on xx/xx/xxxx
Driver: Joe Schmoe - #78, Somewhere Cal.
Choose (A) or (B) by circling (A) or (B) - pick only one:

(A) Series will be an IMCA sanctioned series, drivers will be IMCA registered, points awarded as special series.

(B) Series will be non-sanctioned and will run UMP/WSM style rules.  Track rules prevail.

By paying the fee and turning in this card the undersigned driver agrees to participate under the rule set voted in by the simple majority of all registration cards.  Paying any other license fee required to race is not included.
signed: Joe Schmoe  xx/xx/xxxx

What could be better.  If a guy wants to run this series, he can put up the money to be heard.
That would keep it really simple and avoid a bunch of back room dealing, finger pointing, and wishful thinking.
That would let the track operators know the car counts to expect up-front and  set a purse.
That would let the drivers know the purse up front (remember above where I said the purse should be advertized with the scale vs car counts -- see how that worked out now?)
And the rules were set by the majority vote, by people with skin in the game - the racers, and not by track operators or promoters or financeers.  Guys that do not really have a preference have nothing to lose by paticipating because they would race either way and by pre-registering they can atleast gaurentee a race series.

It is my guess that most mod racers in the valley that are effected by the currect situation would be happy to put up money to have a voice in the series and then support it - as voted on by other paid entants.  Knowing the venues, the dates, and the projected purses vs car counts would make it easy.  Knowing that it will take "X" number of registered drivers to even have the series makes it easy to figure attendance.  Knowing the tracks agree up front to abide by the vote is cool.  One can only ponder what the down-side might be?  I guess it's up to the track operators to figue if putting the cards on the table is a good idea.

We all seem to agree that low purse = low car count.  We also agree that low car count = low purse.  So, lets get all of the numbers in the open. Tracks need X amount of cars to pay X amount of purse.  Ready, go!

P.S. Blaming IMCA for tracks paying low purses, and suggesting there are loads of money being taken from drivers and handed to IMCA is absurd - so lets just skip that poop and move on.  Also, expecting ANY track to pay enough to make the money getting pissed away by some guys on these mods look less than silly, is also absurd.  Time to keep it real folks.

And we (as tracks) will probbly learn a lot this season.  I am  just glad we are just weeks away from opening night and can't wait for the first green flag.

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by Bap33 on 02/15/10 at 5:00pm

HillBilly,
The claim is now a swap (same idea NASCAR tried in 95 that ruined the Grand American class) and is only on the top four finishing cars. The top-running, super-fast, most-likely-targets for getting claimed, ALL RUN IMCA ALL THE TIME, and they would be happy to race an IMCA series that paid WSM money.  You have to beat Hogge, Stone, Standford, Pounds, McDaniels, Daly, Villanueva, and a few dozen other top guys that run IMCA all over the place, before the claim/swap becomes an issue for you (or me, or anyone).

You know that I respect your opinion of that one rule.  Would you support and run an IMCA 12 race series if the rules and sanction was IMCA without a claim/swap?

Here's the best answer I have for you HillBilly, IMCA Series races do allow for non-claim/swap racing.  All other engine limits are there, but no swap/claiming.  In my example it is a series, so it would be possible.  Are you in now?  This may be a way to keep the elite mods alive for a few more years until the Sportmods settle in.

I spoke with Brett Root and asked about Sportmods and tracks and such.  He told me "they are on the way out there ... California is just behind a bit".  After speaking with him, I am as sure as I ever was that Northern Sportmods will save the day.  But, as my buddy Mike said, "we do not need a bunch of look-alike classes".  So, lets set the elite mods up for travleing and the Sportmods for local level shows .... this allows the elite racers time to find a place to land when their cars are gone, and the Sports a chance to grow a bit.  This same idea works for streeters too.

Title: Re: the show goes on!

IMCA does allow for non-claim series...like winter series etc...designed for allowing racers from outside your normal guys to come run with ya.

It wouldn't apply to the 20 races between tulare and kings.  We have posted our rules for 2010 on www.kingsspeedway.net under news.  I think we will have some good racing between Kings, Tulare and Chowchilla.  This is the first time EVER that so many tracks have worked together on building their schedules and the first time that Kings and Tulare have made a complete non-compete schdule.  This can only translate to a good thing for racers.  The tracks are doing everything they can and now it is up to the racers to decide and support their local track.

Good luck to everyone this season regardless of what or where you race.

At first glance, the tires, and cylinder head angle.

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by sj_valley_dave on 02/18/10 at 4:42pm

The cylinder heads on the Chow site does not stipulate 23* only, but they do state no aluminum heads and since there is only 1 iron 14* head out there, they probably figured that no aluminum head rule would cover the 23* head angle as all other iron haeds on the market are 23*...

Title: Re: the show goes on!
Post by scottwoodhouse on 02/18/10 at 6:35pm

the tire rule is something we hope to get at each track but its track discretion.  Hoosier has a little point money so we thought we'd give something back to the racers.

14* heads are just something we don't want to get into....We want this still to be modified racing.
