Santa Maria, CA - August 1, 2009

Super Late Model Stocks, East vs. West Super Streets, and MMI Factory Stocks came out to play Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

Late Model point leader Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo, came out on top in everything but qualifying, winning his 8-lap heat race and the 30-lap main event. Fast time went to Rob Sanders, of Bakersfield, a lap of 14.272 seconds, which is just under 85 miles-per-hour average. Sanders was third to drake in the feature with Bakersfield's John Lowrey second. Nick Bartels, of El Segundo, and Brian Wirtz, of Santa Barbara, were fourth and fifth, in that order. Bartels and Sanders won the other heat races.

Santa Maria's Tim Randolph was, once again, the class of the East/West field, setting fast time of 16.585 seconds and capturing an 8-lap heat race and the 30-lap feature event. Tim's brother Toby, also of Santa Maria, was the runner-up in the feature, followed by Bakersfield drivers Brady Bell and Jeremiah VanScoy, and Buellton's Bobby Meneley. Bell won the second heat.

Gary Rayburn, Jr., of Grover Beach, also had a perfect night in the Factory Stock class with wins in an 8-lap heat race and the 25-lap main event. Richie McGowan, of Bakersfield, made a strong bid to unseat Rayburn from the lead, until a slight slip relegated him to third at the finnish behind Atascadero's Mike Leland. Tim Bennett, of Santa Maria, came to the checkers fourth and Lloyd Wren, Jr., of Bakersfield, fifth. Point leader Dale Sylvester, of Arroyo Grande, and Dan Bryant, of Templeton, captured the other heat races.

At intermission Mike Leland and his wife Katrina, complete with a white wedding dress, renewed their vows in front of their family, friends, and race fans after 8 years of marriage. Mini Stock driver Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, (who's taking a year off from racing to concentrate on business) performed the vows. The bride and groom then climbed into a convertible and led the processional around the track, followed by all of the Factory Stocks.

Next Saturday night Grand Slam West Coast 360 Sprint Cars are expected to field 40 plus cars. Running with the sprinters will be Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks. Admission prices will be $16.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors and military and their spouses, and $5.00 for children six to twelve. Youngsters five and under are free. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
