Santa Maria, CA - July 4, 2009...

West Coast 360 Sprint Cars headlined the fourth of July racing program Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds, East vs. West Super Streets and Mini Dwarfs for kids 5 to 13 years old completed the program.

Richard VanderWeerd, of Visalia, edged Peter Murphy, of Clovis, for his first victory of the season in the 30-lap West Coast 360 Sprint Car feature event. Richard's brother Jace, also from Visalia, placed third, followed by Justyne Hamblin, of Hanford, and Davey Pombo of Kerman. Bakersfield's Rusty Carlile set fast time of 14.871 seconds and 8-lap heat races fell to D. Pombo, San Martin's Wes Gutierrez, and Atascadero's Greg Porte.

Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, bested a large 28-car field of IMCA Modifieds, to score his first 25-lap "A" main event win of the season. Lauer out dueled two hard charging fellow Santa Maria drivers Doug Thornton, who finished second, and Josh Vogt, who came in third, to claim the top spot. Jason Papich, of Arroyo Grande, and Bryan Clark, of Bakersfield, filled out the top-five. Clark was joined by Mike Johnson, of Bakersfield; Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo; and, Joey Claborn, of Santa Maria, in winning 8-lap heat races. The 12-lap "B" main event was won by Mike Johnson of Lompoc.

Santa Maria's Tim Randolph was back in the Speedway's victory circle after the 30-lap East vs. West Super Street feature. Tim's brother Toby, also of Santa Maria, was second, and Bakersfield drivers Lonnie Welch, Billy Simkins, and Robby Sawyer, third through fifth. Eight lap heat race winners were Tim Randolph and Kyle Heckman of Nipomo.

Kyle Peterson won the 15-lap main event for the Mini Dwarf junior division for children 5 to 8 years old, and Tony Lamas did the same in the senior division for youngsters 9 to 13. The Mini Dwarfs ran on a shortened oval made up of part of the front chute and part of the infield. Mini Sprints, powered by 250cc motorcycle engines, ran an exhibition event on the same course.

Next Saturday night the 1st Annual Doug Fort Memorial will mark the return of Golden State Challenge 410 Winged Sprint Cars for the first time since 2005. Papich Construction IMCA Modifieds and Toste Grading & Paving Mini Stocks race as well. It will also be "Race to a Better Environment Night" Ticket prices will be: $18.00 for adults, $16.00 for seniors and military, and $5.00 for children six to twelve. Kids five and under are free. Spectator gates for Saturday's event will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Santa Maria Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
