Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Linson-34 on 05/20/09 at 7:10am so what was the track surface like? I missed the races, what do we have to look forward to this weekend? |

Junk. The bobbsey twins have managed to turn Ascot into Corona. |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by timMod47 on 05/20/09 at 10:12am Lance, If you think you can do a better job then come on out and do it. If you dont like it, well thats to bad for you cause most everyone so far has had a good time on the tracks that have developed so far. Tim. |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Linson-34 on 05/20/09 at 12:37pm So whats "junk"? Dry? Ruts? Sloppy? Ill take all the above except sloppy |

HAVING only been to CORONA once! I have to say... (According to LANCE's description) It must have been a DUST BOWL! I wasn't there, but HOPE (keeping fingers crossed) I can be this weekend!! |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by 32MORGAN on 05/20/09 at 1:55pm i'm not sure i could do a better job at track prep, because it would take some time to figure out. it looks to me like the extremely heavy tracks send to much clay off the surface and i've not heard of clay being added as of yet this year. the two times that the factorys have run it has been extremely dry (opening night) and the other was extremely wet heavy. the mix is great but i'm getting like linson, wondering WHAT"S NEXT. i don't think the tracks getting enough attention to detail. DISCLIAMER; these are jmo's not intended to be negitive. thanks to tom and tim for doing what they do. it's more then i'm doing for track prep........... |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by OLD SCHOOL#6 on 05/20/09 at 2:11pm Hey Tim -- (half of the bobbsey twins.....lol) First, always remember you are "never" going to please "ALL" the drivers on any given night. Second, I have not herd many drivers that have had a real problem with the track condition, other than opening night being a little bit of a challenge. And Third, don't be to concerned about off base comments from motor mouth spectators............. With not having a lot of experience with dirt track preparation, I think you guys (the bobbsey twins), are doing a pretty good job........ |

I agree.........and appreciate all the time you guys put into the track prep. |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Wooliebuger1 on 05/20/09 at 2:33pm I too have to add my .02 cents from the fans point, if you have never even tried to prep a track, or have any idea of what a operator does, then come on down and give it a try, Tom and Tim have done an outstanding job, and with Chris and his staff have also done an outstanding job of turning SMS around and make it a great track to be proud of. All of you keep up the outstanding work, and like was said before, you cant please everyone, but dont take cheap pot shots at the people trying to do the best they know how. Again if you feel you can do better, I am sure both Tom and Tim would be glad to let you show off your talents...JMOO...Don |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Patch on 05/20/09 at 3:16pm The track was fine last weekend. Tim & Tom are doing a great job. If the track was the exact same every week what fun would that be? |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Linson-34 on 05/20/09 at 4:35pm This was a simple question....I too appreciate what the "bobbsey Twins" (lol) are doing. I enjoy having a different track to adapt to also. In no way was I trying to be sarcastic or negative, I missed the races and I'm just curious what the surface was like. Did nobody drive on it? :-? Dry? Ruts? Heavy?........anyone? By the way...Thanks Tim and Tom |

LOTS of people drove on it. You don't hear us complaining. NO reason to. It was unusual to scuff it up and water just before the racing began, but everyone runs on the same track and the fast ones found their way to the front. (I got to watch their trunklids). Later in the evening it was holding up well. Tom and Tim are doing a great job... |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by superstreetracer40 on 05/20/09 at 5:35pm Junk. The bobbsey twins have managed to turn Ascot into Corona Dear LanceAG- I have to admit I was very upset when I saw what you wrote about my 1/2 of the bobbsy twins (Tom ,who does not like being referred to as a "bobbsy twin"). I wanted to share with you that my huband who works mostly out of town Mon-Thur came home Thursday night and headed straight to the track as he needed to push down the cushion from the week before. My two year old daughter saw her father from Thurday night until Sunday morning when we went to church for ONE whole hour as he was working on track prep. In the future if you take issue with the track conditions please bring it to Chris Kern's attention directly along with any suggestions you might have to resolve the issue you see. It sounded like you were offering your services since you seem to know how to do this better. I am assuming you have 25 plus years of experience running various types of heavy equipment and prior track prep experience (working with clay) and that you would like to help. Please give Chris your resume as I am sure he would consider your application and I would love to have my daughter spend more time with her father other then just Sundays. So either step up or please keep your negative comments between yourself and the track promoter Chris Kerns. Sincerely, Susan Breshears |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Toolbox on 05/20/09 at 8:21pm As we all know mother nature has all to do with track prep, therefore we should not take kudos for good tracks nor criticism for bad tracks........................ darn i sound like a a prophet. by the way good job Tom! we are hoping to get our POS out there soon. |

Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by ignitor on 05/20/09 at 11:28pm the track for the WAS race looked like petaluma, this last week it dryed out for the last 2 mains, but no dust so i cant complain. racin wasnt bad, although the show was over VERY early |

Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by NAIL IT WHOYA. on 05/21/09 at 10:28am Just think what the track would be like if no one ever did any work to it...... Makes MOST of the complaining seem a little bit childish don't it.... |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by superhero4 on 05/21/09 at 12:37pm The track was good, and challenging for those that cannot find the right spot for their car to be in. you really had to watch where you exited off of 2 but there was good grip way down low and through the middle of the track. as long as you didn't over drive the entry the slick spot was no problem. for me it makes for good smart racing. There were a few bumpy spots in the corners, but nothing like the 12" + craters we have seen in recent past, |

Ever drive a racecar?? That comment says NO. There is an art to trackprep, it is much more difficult than you imagine. You sit there from your anonymity perch and are obviously clueless. Them Bobbsy Dudes are already good at it and gettin' better all the time. They have a small window of time to get the job done, and so many variables go into it. It's almost like farming, just a lot harder. A farmer has a much larger window of time to produce a crop. A little too much or too little water a day late or a day or two early, no problem. Harvesting times, there is leeway. Prepping a track, the windows for correct amounts of water on the right places are measured in hours, right up to racetime. On the race starts, your pretty much stuck with the prep. If you think that track was junk, you haven't been attending dirt track races very much nor for very long. Please don't badmouth the people that do this, they are good, honest, hardworking people, racing people who have been there and done that. |

Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by superstreetracer40 on 05/22/09 at 8:55am Dear Craven Morehead- My husband read your post when he got in from the track last night and was very greatful how you explained track prep. He has asked me to explain it like you did a few times now however I never get it right. He talks about the clay always changing and that's it's living and breathing thing which is why it changes because of the elements. Thanks again for your understanding you must have done track prep a few times yourself. Susan Breshears |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by Craven Morehead on 05/22/09 at 9:54am Mrs. Breshears, Thank you for your kind words. I have not done track prep, just a local farmboy who has a lot of time playing with dirt, tractors and water. That track needs a cover crop planted on it this fall, it gets worked in in the spring and the clay will be more stable throughout the season, I believe Mr. Fort did that every year, correct me if I'm wrong. Track prep IMO is a combination of construction grading and farming, the crop being the surface on Saturday night. It really is a living thing. I can guarantee that if the complainers were allowed to prep the track, it WOULD BE DISASTER. |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by superstreetracer40 on 05/22/09 at 3:41pm Thanks Craven.....yes you are correct the track needs to be planted. Tom has been saying this for a few years now, but with the short noticed of this years turn of events it was not able to happen. Hopefully next year this will be able to happen. Susan |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by NAIL IT WHOYA. on 05/22/09 at 5:03pm I'll start bringing my grass clippings down for a stockpile if needed. Any type of organic material I think would be good, like hay bales and such. |

This involves a tractor, a grain drill, seed and some rain. and someone to drive the tractor. I'm not sure what kind of seed, maybe oats? Also someone to drive the tractor, like one of them Bobbsy Dudes or me. Also might need a disk and a harrow to prep the ground. Thats it. Then another discing in the spring to work it back in to the ground. That adjusts the Ph so that it holds water better and is more stable through out the season. Then again, I'm just Craven Morehead. |
Title: Re: SMS 5/16 Post by fromthegrandstands on 05/23/09 at 3:56pm how did that work out for Bakersfield this year? I remember seeing a picture of it ALL covered in CROP!! |
