Santa Maria, CA - April 25, 2009...

West Coast Super Late Model Stocks, Papich Construction IMCA Modified, East vs. West Super Street Stocks, and Factory Stocks filled the pits Saturday night for the season opener at the 1/3-mile oval sponsored by Toste Construction.

A near capacity crowd watched San Luis Obispo's Steve Drake begin the defense of his 2008 Super Late Model championship with a victory in the 30-lap "A" main event. Another past champion, Mike Johnson of Lompoc, came in second, followed by Bakersfield's Bobby Hogge IV, Torrance driver Mike Kirby, and Hollister's Andy Obertello. John Lowrey, of Bakersfield, captured the 10-lap "B" feature while Drake, Johnson, Hogge, and Dino Napier, of Corona, won 8-lap heat races. The 4-lap trophy dash was taken by Bakersfield's Rob Sanders and Corona's Johnny Malcolm set fast time of 15.676 seconds.

It seems like every time Bakersfield's Brad Pounds bring his IMCA Modified to Santa Maria Speedway he walks away with the 25-lap "A" feature. Saturday night was no exception as Pounds bested the 22-car field. Mike Johnson, yes the same Mike Johnson who finished second in the Super Late Models, was second in the Modifieds as well. Third through fifth were Tony Toste, of Arroyo Grande, another Mike Johnson, this one from Bakersfield, and Santa Maria's Daylan Coffey in his first full season in IMCA Modifieds. Last year's champion, Danny Lauer of Santa Maria, was first in the 10-lap "B" feature and Pounds, Johnson of Lompoc, and Bakersfield drivers Shane Jones and Nick Sylvester took the 8-lap heat races.

Defending East vs. West Super Street title holder Tim Randolph, of Santa Maria, won their 25-lap feature event. The runner-up spot went to Jeremiah VanScoy, of Bakersfield, who earlier in the evening set fast time of 16.671 seconds. Bakersfield's Lonnie Welch, Nipomo's Kyle Heckman, and Bakersfield's Richie McGowan placed third, fourth and fifth. Randolph, VanScoy, and Welch captured 8-lap heat races and Welch took the 4-lap trophy dash as well.

For the 20-lap Factory Stock main event the 22-car rule was waived to allow three additional cars into the field to save time. Bakersfield drivers Richie McGowan, Keith Johnson, and Devan Jones swept the top spots. Last year's champ Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, was fourth and Jason Bannister, of Bakersfield, fifth. The top-four in the feature event each won an 8-lap heat race.

Next Saturday night West Coast 360 Sprint Cars, NMRA TQ Midgets, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks take over the 1/3-mile oval. Gates open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the US 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
