Title: Local track trivia
Post by S.S.RD45 on 12/01/06 at 11:03pm

Heres a chance to post and ask a trivia question, about your favorite driver, or class or track. In the begining keep it simple, no need to descourage everyone off the bat.

first question: the first west coast driver to win a IMCA modified national title?

Scott Pounds was National Champion and National Rookie, and I think it may have been the same year.

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/02/06 at 9:16pm

This is an excerpt from an article in April of this year.

Scott Pounds won Saturday night’s 25 lap IMCA Modified main event at Bakersfield Speedway Park. The former IMCA Modified national champion has a very busy 2006 planned as he has cars for the dirt late models, IMCA Modifieds and super street stocks. His IMCA Modified is a Larry Shaw car purchased from Chico racer Dustin Jenks.

And another...

Many will remember that Scott was the IMCA National Rookie of the Year in 1993 and followed that up with a National Championship in 1994.

Sorry everyone, I meant Scott Busby hadn't won any IMCA titles.

Sorry,

If I remember correctly didn't Harris tell Scott Pounds to stop racing after 29 wins because it will hurt his winning percentage if he ran a race and didn't win??

Don't forget Tony Otto (he had a short stint there and actually gave me my ONE night of training).
Robert Carlotti even covered the flagging one night (if that counts). I like the "Flagdude returns"...... thats good.

Dave Franey, what year did he win his Hobby Stock championship?

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by imracin68j on 12/03/06 at 10:23am

Heres a question.  4 people have ran my dads patented silver and red combination at SMS including myself.  Can you name the other 3.  If someone gets this I'll buy them something to eat at the next race I see them.  I'd be impressed if someone got this.  (PS) these were not one race deals.  They were ran durring the full season. mama68 is not eligiable for this prize.

Actually I'll give you a hint, because even mama68 couldnt get it.

One of the drivers ran the same year as my dad and finished 3rd in the championship season.  Not the late model season however.

But does anyone know WHO Pocock is and what kind of car did he drive? (Other than BIlly and Sandie)

Late Model #42 in the late 70's early 80's Redd and White 57 Chevy #42 was Arley and Ron Scranton, but that would have been early-mid 70's Maybe 73,74 or 75)

What year did Danny run a AMC Javelin body?
(I don't remember what year it was...)

Question for Billy (Who was the guy who's firesuit looked like a RODEO Clown that drove your dads car?)

What FATHER of a CURRENT Nextel Cup Driver drove one of Danny's cars at a race at OILDALE

Franey was HSChamp '82..and won a SCCA Championship in '93

Graham is Sandies brother who drove a 'Cuda, Roger Mears drove Dannys car at Oildale.

The AMC was 1980 and mama68 stacked that car in the wall during a drivers wife race.  Cut a couple tires as well.

Heres a question.  One year (1976ish) my dad won a trophy dash.  They use to present the trophy to all the drivers in front of the crowd.  The highlight of the trophy dash's was drivers really laying it on the trophy girls and the fans would cheer like a Happy Days live studio audience.  Anyway, one night the track had to make a last minute substitution for a trophy girl.  Can anyone guess who was the substitution my dad tried to lay a kiss on in front of the fans!??  I have a photo for this one..

Tim,

Toni is correct -

The dude drove a late model and he and his son (I believe it was his son anyway) shared a IMCA Mod a few times in '06

Steve Vogt.  What year did Randy Wittaker turn his hobby into a late model??

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by MJRSB on 12/04/06 at 8:26pm

I remember racing with Randy, I think it was 1986. This is why I don't like the format in the yearbook. Everyone that races should be listed regardless of how many points they earned. Its fun to look back and remember.

When was the last year sms ran the lights out show???

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/07/06 at 9:50pm

I don't know what year the last one was..but the year my dad ran in it..he had a 50,000 candle power spot light that light the track up bright...and Graham Pocock running his 'cuda had a magnetic flashlight that fell off going into turn one.  Graham was FLYING around the outside of everyone up against the wall... (Which is how he normally drove that thing anyway)

They also called it "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" race I believe.

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by flagdude on 12/08/06 at 7:14am

You are correct, it was called the midnight ride. I don't remember exactly what year we ran the last one, but Doug was still alive. I remember seeing a light at an odd angle in turn one. We turned the lights back on and there was a car stuck up in the fence, with its nose pointed down. Nobody could figure out how he got there, including the driver. He looked like a fly on a wall.....

Title: Re: Local track trivia

Ya, Flagdude I recall that to, I was driving Chuck Justice's chevelle that night in the PRR.  I remember when they dropped the green, I dropped the clutch, literally, clutch and brake pedals on the floor and no I didn't pull in, there prolly was 50 bucks up for grabs.
AAAHHHHH the good old days, why are we still alive. LOL

Heres another odd ball one. Why does Santa Maria pack the track  backwards?

Title: Re: Local track trivia
Post by flagdude on 12/08/06 at 9:02pm

If you noticed, this year we did NOT pack the track in reverse. We actually spent this whole year packing in the normal rotation. Doug liked to pack the track in the reverse direction. It helped to lay the mud in better (he thought). That was the only reason that I was given.

it was the last year my aunt and uncle were the officials there i believe it was 95 or 96 and the guy on the wall was in a brand new car first night on the track and all he had was a flashlight duct taped on the roof and they did finally figure out how he got there hanging on the wires of the fence

The one on one street car races were good.  It was always nice to see someone bring out a truck off the street and race it against a new cadilac.  Can you imagine the body roll in a 1977 cadilac on the dirt.

i have heard the story told that chuck weber(chad's dad) and his brother couldn't keep from racing each other during packing , so they made them go in the opposite direction . an old man(BC) told this story don't know if he was pulling my leg or not but it is pretty funny .

Title: Re: Local track trivia

sms has always packed the track backward. has nothing to to with the webers even though it makes a good story. alot of tracks pack backward. read an article about it, push the surface in one direction packing and race against it the rest of the night.

Tony you are right. Chuck was in my garage about two years ago bench racing with my dad, chad and myself. After laughing about him and larry racing in packing ,he findly admitted that they were the reason for the backward packing. It got so bad that they were the first ones to get black flagged in wheel pack. I wish I was old enough to be around for those days. Sounds like they had alot more fun then we do these days.

I guess it depends on what you consider a NASCAR driver.

Danny and Don were "NASCAR" drivers, got pics of the old OLDS?

Old Timer "ARLEY SCRANTON" was a NASCAR driver, "BILL BAKER" was too...

Then you've got ALL the guys who came up for the Winston West Race at SMS in about....'74 that Ray Elder won.

Sonny Easley, (killed at Riverside)
Ernie Irvan
Ivan "the terrible" Baldwin

All the guys who ran the old "OPEN SHOWS" that also ran the NASCAR Modified classes at Ascot, etc.  The Beckers, Jim "candyman" Thurkettle, Steve Vaughn in the Circle 6,

Nobody has mentioned JJ Yeley or Dave Blaney. I remeber my Dad met Yeley at the track the first year he ran SCRA, I think he was 17. My Dad was painting a billboard and Yeley and his Dad were walking the track and checking it out. Yeley looked so young my Dad to ask who drove. I remember watch him that night and he was wild but fast I think he ended up on his lid. He ran quite a few other time at SMS and I am sure a few of you can recall him dueling with Sheridan at one the best SCRA races at SMS. Dave Blaney ran quite a few times with the outlaws I used to have a picture signed by him when he ran the Vivarin car. I'll see if I can dig it up.
Dave Blaney -22 Bill Davis car
JJ Yeley- 18 Gibbs car
