Title: Local track trivia Post by S.S.RD45 on 12/01/06 at 11:03pm Heres a chance to post and ask a trivia question, about your favorite driver, or class or track. In the begining keep it simple, no need to descourage everyone off the bat. first question: the first west coast driver to win a IMCA modified national title? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by lmfan01 on 12/01/06 at 11:05pm POUNDS |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by lmfan01 on 12/01/06 at 11:11pm I think i was wrong Scott Busby |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/01/06 at 11:33pm Ryan Cole? Are you sure a National title? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by AaronStewart on 12/01/06 at 11:56pm I think Little Larry Hood won IMCA Rookie of the Year-- does that count as a national title? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Bill_Griffin on 12/02/06 at 8:10am Scott Pounds - was the first to win the IMCA National Title for the West Coast. How many races do you think he won that year. ? |

Thats right, if I remember right only 50 races counted. I say he won 50 races |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Bill_Griffin on 12/02/06 at 11:23am more then 4 - Also I believe He is the only West Coast National Champ. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by lmfan01 on 12/02/06 at 2:03pm I thought Busby was the first |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by TIM_BEWLEY on 12/02/06 at 3:02pm 29 |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Bill_Griffin on 12/02/06 at 5:22pm 29 out of 43 is right. Busby ran Nascar most of the time. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Dirt_Track_Junkie on 12/02/06 at 8:53pm I don't think Scott ever won an IMCA title of any kind. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/02/06 at 9:08pm .I can think of 5 flagmen also...are they the same as your 5? Dave Skaggs Rick Zeiter (also flagged at Oildale) Darrell Walker Tom (Flagdude) Darin... Tom (Flagdude returns) |

Scott Pounds was National Champion and National Rookie, and I think it may have been the same year. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/02/06 at 9:16pm This is an excerpt from an article in April of this year. Scott Pounds won Saturday night’s 25 lap IMCA Modified main event at Bakersfield Speedway Park. The former IMCA Modified national champion has a very busy 2006 planned as he has cars for the dirt late models, IMCA Modifieds and super street stocks. His IMCA Modified is a Larry Shaw car purchased from Chico racer Dustin Jenks. And another... Many will remember that Scott was the IMCA National Rookie of the Year in 1993 and followed that up with a National Championship in 1994. |

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/03/06 at 12:07am .Ah, that's right...forgot Del flagged for a while too.. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Dirt_Track_Junkie on 12/03/06 at 9:23am Sorry everyone, I meant Scott Busby hadn't won any IMCA titles. Sorry, DTJ If I remember correctly didn't Harris tell Scott Pounds to stop racing after 29 wins because it will hurt his winning percentage if he ran a race and didn't win?? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by flagdude on 12/03/06 at 9:26am Don't forget Tony Otto (he had a short stint there and actually gave me my ONE night of training). Robert Carlotti even covered the flagging one night (if that counts). I like the "Flagdude returns"...... thats good. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Chris Kearns on 12/03/06 at 9:39am How about this one. What driver, drove Late Model #42 in the late 70's early 80's ? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by racermick on 12/03/06 at 9:48am Dave Franey, what year did he win his Hobby Stock championship? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/03/06 at 10:23am Heres a question. 4 people have ran my dads patented silver and red combination at SMS including myself. Can you name the other 3. If someone gets this I'll buy them something to eat at the next race I see them. I'd be impressed if someone got this. (PS) these were not one race deals. They were ran durring the full season. mama68 is not eligiable for this prize. Actually I'll give you a hint, because even mama68 couldnt get it. One of the drivers ran the same year as my dad and finished 3rd in the championship season. Not the late model season however. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by MJRSB on 12/03/06 at 10:37am Which class of cars are you counting, |

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by hschamp90 on 12/03/06 at 11:36am Don't know about pocock, but the Mick is correct about the other two. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/03/06 at 2:49pm Larry is right! I owe you next time I see you at the track! |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/03/06 at 6:05pm But does anyone know WHO Pocock is and what kind of car did he drive? (Other than BIlly and Sandie) Late Model #42 in the late 70's early 80's Redd and White 57 Chevy #42 was Arley and Ron Scranton, but that would have been early-mid 70's Maybe 73,74 or 75) What year did Danny run a AMC Javelin body? (I don't remember what year it was...) Question for Billy (Who was the guy who's firesuit looked like a RODEO Clown that drove your dads car?) What FATHER of a CURRENT Nextel Cup Driver drove one of Danny's cars at a race at OILDALE Franey was HSChamp '82..and won a SCCA Championship in '93 |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by racermick on 12/03/06 at 6:32pm Graham is Sandies brother who drove a 'Cuda, Roger Mears drove Dannys car at Oildale. |

The AMC was 1980 and mama68 stacked that car in the wall during a drivers wife race. Cut a couple tires as well. Heres a question. One year (1976ish) my dad won a trophy dash. They use to present the trophy to all the drivers in front of the crowd. The highlight of the trophy dash's was drivers really laying it on the trophy girls and the fans would cheer like a Happy Days live studio audience. Anyway, one night the track had to make a last minute substitution for a trophy girl. Can anyone guess who was the substitution my dad tried to lay a kiss on in front of the fans!?? I have a photo for this one.. |

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/03/06 at 10:49pm Ok, here's a few pics... My son got this pic from Dave the year him and Weber shared the car, Note the comments he signed on the pic. ![]() Here's the only pic I have of Graham's car ![]() Who are these two...and what in the HE77 are they doing? ![]() ...last one WHO are these two (FUTURE Late Model Driverleft and Daughter of a Late Model& Cal.Dirt Car driver) ![]() |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by TIM_BEWLEY on 12/04/06 at 5:00pm according to the old progams i have it states that he was the '83 champ. but i would almost bet that a guy would not forget the year he won a championship. lol the girl looks like one of the payne girls. toni? don't know who the dude is |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/04/06 at 5:20pm Tim, Toni is correct - The dude drove a late model and he and his son (I believe it was his son anyway) shared a IMCA Mod a few times in '06 |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by racermick on 12/04/06 at 5:29pm Tim, Robert did win the championship in '82, he got his first one the year after i got my first one. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/04/06 at 5:45pm Steve Vogt |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/04/06 at 7:15pm Steve Vogt is correct... I can't believe the almighty Franey could have been wrong about his OWN championship...too funny |

Steve Vogt. What year did Randy Wittaker turn his hobby into a late model?? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by MJRSB on 12/04/06 at 8:26pm I remember racing with Randy, I think it was 1986. This is why I don't like the format in the yearbook. Everyone that races should be listed regardless of how many points they earned. Its fun to look back and remember. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by S.S.RD45 on 12/07/06 at 8:05pm When was the last year sms ran the lights out show??? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/07/06 at 9:50pm I don't know what year the last one was..but the year my dad ran in it..he had a 50,000 candle power spot light that light the track up bright...and Graham Pocock running his 'cuda had a magnetic flashlight that fell off going into turn one. Graham was FLYING around the outside of everyone up against the wall... (Which is how he normally drove that thing anyway) They also called it "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" race I believe. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by flagdude on 12/08/06 at 7:14am You are correct, it was called the midnight ride. I don't remember exactly what year we ran the last one, but Doug was still alive. I remember seeing a light at an odd angle in turn one. We turned the lights back on and there was a car stuck up in the fence, with its nose pointed down. Nobody could figure out how he got there, including the driver. He looked like a fly on a wall..... |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by mudslinger47 on 12/08/06 at 12:56pm Ya, Flagdude I recall that to, I was driving Chuck Justice's chevelle that night in the PRR. I remember when they dropped the green, I dropped the clutch, literally, clutch and brake pedals on the floor and no I didn't pull in, there prolly was 50 bucks up for grabs. AAAHHHHH the good old days, why are we still alive. LOL Duane |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by S.S.RD45 on 12/08/06 at 7:03pm Heres another odd ball one. Why does Santa Maria pack the track backwards? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by flagdude on 12/08/06 at 9:02pm If you noticed, this year we did NOT pack the track in reverse. We actually spent this whole year packing in the normal rotation. Doug liked to pack the track in the reverse direction. It helped to lay the mud in better (he thought). That was the only reason that I was given. |

it was the last year my aunt and uncle were the officials there i believe it was 95 or 96 and the guy on the wall was in a brand new car first night on the track and all he had was a flashlight duct taped on the roof and they did finally figure out how he got there hanging on the wires of the fence |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by flagdude on 12/08/06 at 9:20pm That year sounds about right. Are your relatives Ron and Caroline? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/08/06 at 10:02pm The one on one street car races were good. It was always nice to see someone bring out a truck off the street and race it against a new cadilac. Can you imagine the body roll in a 1977 cadilac on the dirt. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by TALON75 on 12/08/06 at 10:51pm Ryan D. wrote on 12/08/06 at 7:03pm:
i have heard the story told that chuck weber(chad's dad) and his brother couldn't keep from racing each other during packing , so they made them go in the opposite direction . an old man(BC) told this story don't know if he was pulling my leg or not but it is pretty funny . |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by TIM_BEWLEYJR on 12/09/06 at 9:37am sms has always packed the track backward. has nothing to to with the webers even though it makes a good story. alot of tracks pack backward. read an article about it, push the surface in one direction packing and race against it the rest of the night. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by outlawaaron98 on 12/09/06 at 12:00pm flagdude wrote on 12/08/06 at 9:20pm:

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by JoeClab89 on 12/10/06 at 4:41pm Tony you are right. Chuck was in my garage about two years ago bench racing with my dad, chad and myself. After laughing about him and larry racing in packing ,he findly admitted that they were the reason for the backward packing. It got so bad that they were the first ones to get black flagged in wheel pack. I wish I was old enough to be around for those days. Sounds like they had alot more fun then we do these days. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by TALON75 on 12/10/06 at 10:30pm well thanks for backing it up joey , sometimes i can't tell if your pops is setting me up or telling the truth , he is the old man i was refering to . |

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/11/06 at 8:16pm How many NASCAR drivers have driven at SMS |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by S.S.RD45 on 12/11/06 at 9:40pm Winston Cup(nextel) maybe even Busch or just NASCAR drivers? |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/11/06 at 10:01pm Cup drivers |

Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/11/06 at 10:37pm Thats good but theres even more |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by fromthegrandstands on 12/11/06 at 11:08pm I guess it depends on what you consider a NASCAR driver. Danny and Don were "NASCAR" drivers, got pics of the old OLDS? Old Timer "ARLEY SCRANTON" was a NASCAR driver, "BILL BAKER" was too... Then you've got ALL the guys who came up for the Winston West Race at SMS in about....'74 that Ray Elder won. Sonny Easley, (killed at Riverside) Ernie Irvan Ivan "the terrible" Baldwin All the guys who ran the old "OPEN SHOWS" that also ran the NASCAR Modified classes at Ascot, etc. The Beckers, Jim "candyman" Thurkettle, Steve Vaughn in the Circle 6, |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by imracin68j on 12/11/06 at 11:25pm I was strictly talking cup cars. No one said Kinser.. "Smilin" Milon Garrett who won a sprint car championship did some running with the truck series as well. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by mudslinger47 on 12/12/06 at 12:41am Hey Grandstands, I met Steve Vaughn at Vegas this year at the Dirt late model race, heck of a nice guy, he and Pete V. used to race alot together at Ascot. Used to go down there once in a while to watch the DLM. Retiredcrewguy could tell a story or to about those trips. LOL Duane |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by mudslinger47 on 12/12/06 at 8:24am Dont forget J.J. Yeley. He raced SCRA sprint car at SMS. Had two cars out and ready to go. Chet |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by DIRT27 on 12/12/06 at 8:25am Nobody has mentioned JJ Yeley or Dave Blaney. I remeber my Dad met Yeley at the track the first year he ran SCRA, I think he was 17. My Dad was painting a billboard and Yeley and his Dad were walking the track and checking it out. Yeley looked so young my Dad to ask who drove. I remember watch him that night and he was wild but fast I think he ended up on his lid. He ran quite a few other time at SMS and I am sure a few of you can recall him dueling with Sheridan at one the best SCRA races at SMS. Dave Blaney ran quite a few times with the outlaws I used to have a picture signed by him when he ran the Vivarin car. I'll see if I can dig it up. Dave Blaney -22 Bill Davis car JJ Yeley- 18 Gibbs car 2 modern era cup drivers |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by the_dirt_hurt on 12/12/06 at 1:24pm Tyler Walker ran with the winged 410's at SMS when he was maybe 16 or 17 years old and he served a short stint in NAPCAR. Billy Boat always ran well at SMS in midgets and now he is known for his time in IRL. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by 98x_crewman on 12/12/06 at 1:32pm when i was younger i grew up watching ivan baldwin race alot at 99 speedway. he raced with my uncle troy beebe who ran some busch race's in the late 80's early 90's i have a race on tape somehwere when a young jeff gordon was just getting started out in busch . |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by woodracin13 on 12/12/06 at 1:45pm Billy, I know that Jeff Gordon raced at Bako in the World of Outlaws in 92 I think. Did he also race in SMS then or around then sometime. Later, Jacky |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by Patch on 12/12/06 at 4:10pm He was to young to race at SMS. You had to be 16 years old. Someone brought it to Doug Forts attention that he was only 14 at the time, So Doug sent him away. I belive it was an Insurance issue. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by woodracin13 on 12/12/06 at 10:03pm In the World of Outlaws he was 16 at least I know that when he raced here he was because he is tow years older than me and I was 17 in 92. |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by snoopy22 on 12/13/06 at 12:43pm Jeff Gordon was born in 1971 so if he raced in 1992 that would make him 21 years old |
Title: Re: Local track trivia Post by woodracin13 on 12/13/06 at 4:30pm Yeah your right I was 18 in 92 I went to Shafter High so give me a break....lol.... He is 3years older than me I remembered after I posted the last. But regardless he did race in the WOO in BAKO. If I remember right it was around 92. Later, Jacky |
